Wait, there are skin competitions? Who judges them? Also, having hair-over-eye skins and female skins with the exact same design except for different coloring is believable.

Skin comps are little competitions on multiplayer servers run by random players. And of course having those skins is believable, but it's extremely annoying that people ONLY use those skins.

Message me yours if you want to trade in Animal Crossing: New Leaf or just need some friends to play with. I can also do Pokemon trades in Pokemon X(or Y), but I don't have any good stuff, and the only good stuff I have is not for trade so...send me requests anyway.
Quote of the Day:"It's Occam's Shuriken: when the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas."
i recently posted a cliché skin i previously made but i just made a new one to actually fit my name
i only kept the head and the pants from the last one (it is still original, i just took it off my last custom skin) it still needs a few improvements, and it is hardly tell able that that is a jet pack on his back. but at least it was better then the last one. im curious though, why do all these generic skins win skin competitions. in all honesty if you use a generic skin (meaning it is accessible to download) you should be disqualified. it is a skin competition, not a 'what is the most used skin in minecraft' competition. isn't it?
I try to get my skins more abstract, in the past, I'd go to high-quality skin websites and download the most abstract skin ever.
But one fateful night, I dreamed about a herd of cows, I lived with them, until they were these brown aliens, with their skin torn off. (Get it? Skin?)
I had an urge to make a skin after I woke up, so I did. I based my skin off the dream, using the MC cow as the base.
I go to RP and Economy servers, and everytime i go to these Roleplays, they keep telling me to change my skin.
The people were using those same CREEPERHEADPHONEJACKETBOY and CUTEBIGEYEBOWTIEGIRL skins. Damnit.

however as time passes it is hard to make an original skin that someone else hasn't done already
if the body is 1632 pixels (excluding a second layer, which could double it)
head: 8*8*6 = 384
top of torso and arms: 4*16 = 64
chest (arms included): 16*12 = 192
back (arms included): 16*12 = 192
side (arms only, left): 12*4 = 48
side (arms only, right): 12*4 = 48
(inward side of right arm): 12*4 = 48
(inward side of left arm): 12*4 = 48
(inward side of body left legs included): 4*24 = 96
(inward side of body right legs included): 4*24 = 96
bottom of torso and hands: 4*16 = 64
top of legs: 4*8 = 32
front of legs (outsides already covered): 8*12 = 96
back of legs (outsides already covered): 8*12 = 96
inside legs left: 4*12 = 48
inside legs right: 4*12 = 48
bottom of feet: 4*8 = 32
sorry if my math looks weird, but consider that i am calculating the total area of the skin (every single editable pixel). and correct me if i'm off (please show error)
that means (even though most of them could look similar) there are 27,380,416,512 possible skin combinations (using one layer, and accounting for every single pixel)
according to minecraft.net (at the time of this post) there are, and i quote, "so far 19,937,819 people bought the PC/Mac version of the game" which means (if my math was right) that there are still 27,360,478,693 possible combinations (assuming each account has a different skin, and there is only one skin per account)
*source* google calculator, google search (for some information), and my brain (also help from a skin creator for counting the pixels)
i want to say that that math shows that if people were more original that we wouldn't have this problem, but you also have to consider that most of those combinations are e.g one solid color, one solid color darker, one solid color lighter, etc . . .
While I never have used any of the skins available on needcoolshoes and novaskin, I tend to find skins directly when I am walking around various servers and use needcoolshoes to extract the skin from a user
It takes 2 hours on average to get all the shadings right because there are no tools other than pixel by pixel to get the skin to look exactly I want
While I tend to adapt to skins I found interesting or contains a feature of interest. It often ends up completely become made from scratch as every pixel get recolored or adjusted to e.g. get the correct hairstyle
As far I know, at that time there are only 3 girl skins that has the same hairlength as my skin. For example:
The male skin is inspired from a Grim reaper skin I saw on a server. However it is made form scratch by coloring black on a beige base
Female skin in detail:
1. Leftmost (ver 1) is made completely from scratch based on what I want except for the eyes (as steve eyes does not give out the correct impression as it is too serious, and bug eyes are too sparky which is also wrong impression of what I have in mind)
2. Peanut0918's old skin has a fringe I never seen before in any girl skin I have seen at that time. The dark clothing looks cool thus was adapted to make ver 2
3. The blonde (name forgot) has some shadings, thus I try to immitate her shading to provide some 3D, but the shading is entirely custom and pixel by pixel
4. Kwl5 gave me an idea how a ponytail can be represented on skins, thus I adapted that to make a ponytail ver 3
5. Emerytoocool has some shading that is between the street fighter shading skins and the teenager girl skin. Ithen adapted that at the arm region to create a 3D touch, which makes the ver 3 I am using today

i for one, was calculating the surface area, not the volume. and your equations would be to find the volume. if trying to find the surface area then the head would be 8*8*6 because one side is 8*8 and their are 6 sides to a cube. otherwise your answer will be the volume. you also didn't consider that with a skin editor you can edit under the head, above the torso, between the arms, under the torso, above the legs, between the legs, and under the feet.
that means (even though most of them could look similar) there are 27,380,416,512 possible skin combinations (using one layer, and accounting for every single pixel)
The correct formula is actually 16,777,216 ^ 1632, which is an impossibly gigantic number; this is because for every one of the 16,777,216 colors the first pixel can have the second pixel can have that many as well, and so on (similarly, one byte (8 bits) in binary can store 2 ^ 8 = 256 possible states, not 2 * 8 = 16; two decimal (10 states) digits can store 10 ^ 2 = 100 states, and so on; this is also why there are 16,777,216 (2 ^ 24) different colors despite only 24 bits. Also, there are MANY more "known colors" than that - that's just a limitation of display technology, just like the claims that the human eye can only see 60 FPS).
The Wiki also gives the correct answer here, which also accounts for the hat layers
There can be up to 3.06×1023,581 unique Minecraft skins.
That's a number with 23,582 digits... infinity for all practical purposes. Of course, many of those combinations will either look the same (e.g;. white with RGB values of 255, 255, 255 vs 254, 255, 255) or not be recognizable as anything, but there are still a lot of unique skins.
I have made my minecraft skin from scratch by 100% right after i was a noob of minecraft. I edited it using different programs and based it off me. It took me like 3 weeks to get my final result of my skin. My skins face ended up being my avatar for the minecraftforums. When i finally started to play online in servers. I saw so many youtuber skins and girl skins with huge eyeball and all generally looking the same.I saw no creativity and most of them were ugly. My skin looks like this:
