A discussion among a few of my community members has been in regards to whether we really need a nice spawn on the server, So I thought I'd get some input from the forums community as well. When you look for a server, is a nice built, welcoming spawning? Is it a requirement for you? What do you think?
Depends on how the server runs. If it's just a plain jane vanilla survival then a hub isn't important because it serves no purpose. If you have an admin shop or mini games then a hub is some what needed as a way to show what you have available. I personally like hubs but small and simple is key IMO. My PC is slow and large complex hubs make me lag out. Since going to the hub is an important part of some servers I will likely stop playing there if that is the case.
Bear in mind that I tend not to future-proof my posts. If I said something a while back that doesn't make sense, it probably did make sense at the time.
Also, unless my avatar at the time is a Minecraft skin, I probably didn't make it. Google image search is a very real thing.
Too be fair, you have to see it in the new comer's eye. What do you think a new comer will do if he sees a crappy spawn? This may deter them. If you want high player retention, a decent-spawn is required. It doesn't have to be an all-techy hypixel spawn.
I don't really care for spawns that are massive caverns of space that look awesome but have very little stuff to do in them. I don't even mind having a spawn full of blocked-off entryways where everything's "Under Construction, check back later", just don't have me spent minutes walking around the place simply looking at the epic design choices.
Give me shops, give me displays (donators, voters, etc), give me autofarms everyone can use, etc. Spawn is little more than a roadway to somewhere else, so I'm not going to be there a whole lot no matter what I think about your server.

for me its mostly dependent on what kinda server your going for. a larger one with multiple modes and activities should have something that shows some work and care went into it. its its something like a small vanilla server i think its either best to go with a simple spawn, one the players build or just an area in a nice looking area of the server. doesn't have to be fancy, but functional is always good
I nice spawn has never been all that important to me personally. I guess I just got use to not having one. I've joined quite a few servers that have had some pretty massive spawns that have made me say wow, but I never use them for anything. The only time I go back to spawn, once a game is going, is to greet brand new players joining the server.
That being said, I don't play on mini game servers so maybe thats why I've never really seen the appeal for one.

Have you been on a survival server that does these things at spawn? Do you think having the autofarm undermines the survival experience of starting a fresh game on the server? Should difficult packs based on adventuring have a spawn at all being ithat it gives you a place to hide right off the bat? What does everyone else think?
I am more inspired by minimalist spawn points than developed ones. I like spawning on grass. I like spawning in the middle of nowhere and forced to explore to find a player town.
My favorite Survival server (dead now, of course) had this really neat idea. You spawned in this small shack in the middle of a desert, and then made your way down a pathway. Along the way, there were a couple small houses that had basic info in them. Then, you reached the REAL spawn, this epic fortress/city on top of a jungle mountain. All the major info was held in that city, as were portals to other realms, outside of spawn, ETC.
That same server originally had another idea. Surrounding spawn was a massive safe zone, which was filled with player-made builds that they decided were good enough for spawn. That was pretty neat too.
I like medium sized spawns. Not ones huge or small as huge ones will be a pain to sprint around and find things and for a small spawn there will be little space to provide information. But medium sized spawns have enough space for things like a rule board, chests, and all kinds of things depending on what type of server your running. If its for a hub, a big one would work depending on how big you make your portals. If you are making a big hub I would suggest pressure push and maybe a speed boost to get around quicker. I like spawns to look fancy, not plain and dull as it just takes away from the server making it seem less professional. Also a server with tons of spammers, immature people, and too much broadcasting is what also takes away a huge part of the server. People don't like any of that. So in conclusion, I would say yes. I would say it does need a good spawn for people play on it.
Me personally, I think it does, it adds a nice feel and a nice introduction to how you start. It gives a good influence on if the person thinks that the server is good or bad, that's just my opinion

Having an aesthetically pleasing spawn is the second most important thing for a Minecraft server (the first being that all of the common sense requirements have been met such as the server not being entirely financially dependent on donators... owner should be able to handle the cost of maintaining their own server, at least to some extent). If I log onto a server and there is no real spawn, I leave within 10 seconds. Why? Well, if the server owner doesn't have the sense to at least have something there, then I figure either the server has opened too early or the server owner doesn't know what they're doing.
When I log onto a server that has a visually appealing and (preferably) unique spawn, I definitely take the time to explore it a little. So yes, I would consider having a decent spawn a requirement. When there is no spawn at all or the spawn looks like little to no effort was put into it, often times the basic in-game commands don't even work and the usernames in chat are not formatted in any way. As others have already said, the server spawn serves as the primary factor in the first impression your server has on new players, so definitely make it one of your priorities.
When I join in a server, and see a well built spawn, and a warm welcome from the members. It shows me that the server is mature, and well organized. So, yes indeed it does greatly affect my view on a server.

First impressions are always important, and the spawn is the first impression of the server.

It certainly helps, but it's neither the first nor the last thing I look for.
A good lobby will not impress me if people are spamming, throwing out homophobic or ableist slurs, and generally being terrible people.
On the flip side, a bad or non-existant lobby may not necessarily deter me if the players are decent human beings.
Bear in mind that I tend not to future-proof my posts. If I said something a while back that doesn't make sense, it probably did make sense at the time.

All I really care about a spawn is that it tells me the rules and what I can do.
It doesn't really have to be all fancy, just something.
As a matter of fact, an overkill spawn deters me away from that server instantly.

Eccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc
Basically this.
Big huge spawn hubs deter me off the bat.
Cast aside your festive doylaks: dragon stuff is about to happen.
Multiplayer is lonely once you understand how it actually works.
