Greetings, everybody! Today, I am here to talk about the world of Minecraft and the implications of it!
A number of clues point towards the Nether being a colossal (perhaps infinite) super volcano beneath the Minecraft world. Behold the evidence.
Caverns
As we know, caverns are extremely plentiful in the world of Minecraft; there is pretty much never a chunk that spawns without any caves in it, despite the complete lack of any other signs of karst topography. Many of these 'caverns' are just as common in completely dry places as they are in locations at the surface with regular rainfall. This evidence suggests that the 'caverns' in Minecraft are not formed by small amounts of acid in rain, but rather, by another external force. A supervolcanic eruption does meet these requirements.
Slimes and Magma Cubes
Slimes have no obvious source of energy. They oftentimes live in dark caves a hundred meters below any sunlight with no apparent source of fuel. Slimes can only spawn at the bottom of a Minecraft world, the part that is closest to an extremely hot region known as the Nether. It seems likely, therefore, that slimes may rely on heat for sustenance. They seem to be giant primordial single-celled organisms, as they reproduce asexually by simply splitting, behave in a very simple manner as if they lack minds, and often appear in huge quantities. If my assertions are correct, this would make slimes thermophiles. Thermophiles are only found in geologically active areas. If the Nether is indeed the slime's source of heat, the Nether and the Overworld must be very, very close together, perhaps separated by only a few meters of bedrock. This would place the surface and the Nether less than a hundred meters away. This makes the Nether much too shallow to be the Mantle, as the Earth's crust is miles thick, and the asthenosphere is much, much thicker. Obviously, it does not appear this way in Creative mode, as jamming the two worlds into one would be a huge waste of processing power, and ghasts would get very annoying while mining deep within the world. This could mean that at some point in the Overworld's early history, magma cubes made it into the surface through a hole in the Bedrock layers, and evolved into slimes as the heat in this area decreased.
The Catastrophe
Across the Minecraft world, I find many signs that a great catastrophe has taken place. Tons of temples lay dormant and damaged, even though no non-human entity is currently able to build with many blocks currently used in naturally generated structures. This suggests that the builders of these structures either died, hid, changed forms, or left. I support the first hypothesis. It is pretty obvious that humans used to live somewhere in the Minecraft world long ago; the sheer number of reanimated corpses should be evidence enough of that. The specific condition of their corpses is baffling if you fail to consider the Supervolcano theory. It's pretty clear that the zombies haven't decomposed much at all. They do have green skin, but no zombie in vanilla Minecraft history has ever been known to be missing a body part other than its eyes. Skeletons, on the other hand, have a respectable set of bones. Sure, they don't have fingers and toes, but I'm guessing that's simply for lack of detail. At no point in an ordinary corpse's history does it possess a full set of bones and NO flesh; that simply doesn't happen. The bones always start rotting before the flesh has finished. This means that the flesh of a skeleton was removed by means other than decay.
So how do I explain this? It's simple! The skeletons were those who were blasted by pyroclastic material during the eruption. It is possible that in some areas, dead people fell down through holes in the bedrock and into the Nether, hence the existence of Wither Skeletons. As we all know, the debris from a supervolcano can block out the sun for several days, creating a period of extreme cold. It is during this time, I believe, that many people froze on the surface. Those people became zombies. The winter from an eruption of such an incredible magnitude would probably be enough to freeze all fluids in a human body. This would cause a lot of changes, but most visibly, your eyes would be destroyed, hence the lack of eyes in a zombie.
Am I wrong? Am I right? Am I some loser who lives in his mother's basement? I'd like to hear your arguments for and against this theory!
I like the slimes as single-celled. I've never thought about it, but maybe the collect energy from masses of microorganisms which it absorbs as it hops along. Its food could be found in abundance in caves or swampy environments. However, I've always taken the apparent destruction around the world to be related to some sort of zombie plague and numerous wars, causing people to devolve into a more primitive civilization with temples and magic.
The only thing that really bugs me about this is how you mention the nether being under bedrock. Minecraft shares some items, mobs and more from rpg games (slimes etc) like the "void" and that is what is supposed to be under bedrock (like in skyrim the void is downward). Also the nether is referred to as a "dimension" meaning that it wouldn't be a part of the minecraft world (For programming it is a part of the world though). Anyway another reason why people might think that the nether is below bedrock is because of the religion based realm known as "hell". "Hell" is said to be underground (REALLY far underground) and is described as a hot place filled with lava and fire (just like the nether). So that is why people refer to the nether as "hell".

why do we have to take a portal to this supervolcano?
and if your going to say because we have to pass the bedrock ceiling that means in theory digging below bedrock would go to the nether not the void :<
The existence of the Nether Portal is a flaw in my theory. Obviously, there's no known naturalistic explanation for such a device with or without the super volcano, so it may just be a gameplay element. Perhaps spirits in the Nether help to create a bridge between the gap for some reason. Regarding the whole void thing, I think it's likely that the Nether and Overworld are placed in two separate dimensions to avoid lag and abnormal sounds in both dimensions.
Well here's my take about the nether portals. Possibly, the endermen developed a technology that enabled them to travel deeper into the world's core. However, they found out that the core was too impenetrable hence they end up reaching only at magma level.
What is this technology I'm talking about? The nether portals of course. Based from observation, I discovered that the particles emitting from the portal is similar from the radiant particles emanating from endermen. If I'm correct, the particles are representations of their life energy which they also spend when teleporting great distances. Therefore, the endermen tried further development into their teleportation capabilities by creating a portal made entirely out of their own life force.
In order to hold such vast energy, they need some kind of material to withstand the stress and maybe even contain it. In their home dimension (END), several standing pillars are holding a power source that maintains the energy levels of the ender dragon. It is quite noticeable that the material holding these power source is obsidian, a material known to resist high impact forces. Presumably, it can also absorb energy without the material being combusted into bits. Hypothetically, an obsidian frame would be ideal for the portal technology.

I LOVE all of this execpt the part about slimes, I always thought of them as an invasive species from a long forgotten place. They bred and few made it to the nether and evolved. Other then that great story! 👍

xD I couldn't leave it at just that.
I think your theory is great! It makes perfect sense in my eyes, and nothing seems to be out of place. Great job!

I never thought about the nether like this.....
Now that I think about it makes sense....
but explain one thing...

I doubt Notch took the time to put in some big post-apocalypse hidden plot device, but it's nice to speculate and certainly makes sense.
