This is why I created MAGE: the Minecrafters Against Griefing Everywhere. We fight griefers, so you don't have to.
(NO IT'S NOT BASED OFF OF SCRUBBING BUBBLES STOP ASKING)
We are a (currently small) group of fighters warring against griefers everywhere. I originally created MAGE on the Mineverse Skygrid server, and we practically drove out griefers there until I stopped playing and the server became re-corrupted.
Note from personal experience: Asking griefers why they grief will usually net one of four responses: "Cuz it's fun (read: I enjoy the misery of others)", "For resources (read: I'm too lazy to play the game myself)", "Cuz I can (read: I enjoy the misery of others when I'm not banned for it)", and "Quit crying baby (read: I'm a troll)"

"also peaple who get griefed should take it as a compliment" -sirror99 2015
I am on the griefing side of people in Minecraft. If you do know what I did in the past, you would see me as an, and so be it. I have betrayed many "factions" for loot, they are easy pickings. These players are soo gullible. At one point I had left one person begging for mercy as I poured water and lava all over his creation in a PvP server. As to griefing people on creative, I can't really explain it being moral at all. Since I had gotten bored of Minecraft since I started griefing, I just got an urge to do so every time I play the game, unless it's with friends. It is hilarious to see people being angered that their "fanf game" or "dating service" to be destroyed, their gullibility is atrocious.
I basically got bored of the game and took it out on others, the limited risk of a global ban doesn't really put me off griefing. I don't particularly know why, again, I just love to see people getting angered that their creation was destroyed. It is so funny to see people actually caring about random spam I make, whether it be pms or global. I usually don't understand why people take it seriously, but when they do, it is frighteningly funny.
So... you're a troll.
"begging for mercy as I poured water and lava all over his creation" Dude, that's freaking horrible. Why do you laugh at this? Imagine someone in real life laughing at you while you begged for mercy, as he set your house on fire and smashed your electronics, stole your hard-earned money, soaked everything, and threw you against a wall.

Here's the reply you're ganna get: "I don't care about that stuff" "I only care about my family!"
Well, that's the pity argument most people would say...
Also, I'm pretty sure the user wasn't begging for mercy, just asking nicely to stop. "Please stop that! :(" is not begging for mercy.

My scientific reasoning as posted in my post above: Large quantity's of Dopamine released at once in the brain make it pleasing, and the process of griefing being over the web means that there is little empathetic feelings that griefers feel for avatars that they don't know in real life. When humans disconnect the online life from the real one, results like this occur, (a la GTA franchise). It's sad that human nature finds happiness in the destruction of others hard work, whether online or off, (a la 4 year with Lincoln logs), but it is ultimately a fact of life.
Realm of the Mad God is "massively-multiplayer rouge-like cooperative bullet hell shooter" with an 8 bit pixelated art style." It came out in 2010, and has been free online for the past five years. You may wonder, why do I bring up this game when discussing minecraft griefing? The community has been degrading for the past three years, ever since the game was acquired by a large corporation, Kabam, in 2012, and, as a result, the creation of a channel dedicated entirely to trolling. Suitably named ROTMG troller, its videos have spawned controvoserivy that has racked the game's community to it's core. Somehow, this "ROTMG Troller" bloke had found a way to do what minecrafters have dubbed "grief" a cooperative mmo. After watching some ROTMG trollers videos and reading the comments on the videos, I have a much greater apperation of the minecraft's community general disapproval of griefers. Most of the comments on these so-called videos were congratulating him on his victorys robbing people of their valuable hours poured into the game, and even irl money. (Some of the items "griefed" cost irl money.) So when I hear you two arguing, @DrWeegee disgusted at the idea of griefers, and @block2311 as a old griefer trying to reform, I want to remind you, @DrWeegee, that the community could be much worst, and, you @block2311, that the community is very nice compared to some games. While both of you have valid arguments opposing the other, please try to be more empathic. I find that emoji's help.

I did not mean to argue with him, or be rude. I must admit that last comment was rude of me. Sorry.
I don't despise griefers. I don't really care for it when it's allowed. I only get annoyed by it when it's not allowed, and simply done for amusement. So, yes in a sense, I dislike them, but I won't go out of my way to call them out or anything.
I do know the community tends to be nice... In some places, and I love that he's trying to redeem himself, I'm not trying to stop him, or call him out. I'm just saying that it's a difficult task if you try to take a big leap in it.
Many humans are inherently sociopathic, and total anonymity and a lack of immediately-recognizable consequences is more freedom than they can resist abusing. And by "immediately-recognizable" I mean that the long-term, cumulative effects which those behaviors often have on the real world are rarely ever considered by such people. I have personally always maintained my respect for the emotions of the real people represented by the flickering pixels on my monitor, because I understand that the scope of their influence extends into a much smaller, realer, and unescapable world containing far more people whose fragile emotions are often the determining factors for a wide variety of negative behaviors with very real consequences. The universe is a closed system, and everything affects everything. Virtual malevolence spreads just as quickly and has the capacity to create just as many distrustful people as any real betrayal can, and there has only ever been a thin veneer of trust which holds all of human society together. Maintaining that unspoken agreement properly is the difference between mutual progress or reciprocal destruction. Remember even your minor contributions to both when you look to place blame for your own suffering or gratitude for your prosperity.
@DrWeegee Thank you for your response, I am glad you feel that way, and it helps that you clarified your feelings, a hard thing to do on the internet.
@block2311 Yup. Those PVP players are the REAL threat. (It's cool that you know about realm, not many people do.)
I also find it sad that this thread has turned from why do people grief into why shouldn't people grief, and why people who do so are horrible, despicable people. Just because you have had no inclination to grief and have been the target of griefing does NOT mean you should take up your pent up feelings and pour them out onto this thread. Please take your qualms to a different post.
same as computer hackers! this is why I do not play on servers , just stick with my vanilla world!! the griefing would anger me too much to play , I would be rage quittiing too much!!
First off, you're taking my post too literal. I do not mean just plots, I mean anywhere griefing isn't allowed. Like survival servers, or creative...
"im talking for most of the factions griefers and peaple who like to blow things up because i have meet most of them" This is NOT A lie. You have not met over 1/2 of all griefers that play Minecraft. There's too many for you to even remember! Again, do not speak for all griefers, they all do it with different intents NO MOST GRIFERS GRIEF FOR ONE REASON. Also, taking my building being destroyed as a compliment?! That's not even logical! Just because you enjoy doing things to others doesn't mean it's a nice thing! That's... Insane! ARE YOU A GRIFER?
most of the griefers only like to blow up cool buildings so yes you should take it as a compliment that your building was blown up
Players somehow find humor in destroying the younger audience's creations. They usually do it to upload it to YouTube so they can get a few lousy views. It's all some sort of popularity game that no one is winning.
most of the griefers only like to blow up cool buildings so yes you should take it as a compliment that your building was blown up
This literally makes no sense, it's illogical.
Why should a griefer blow up and destroy my large creative-made medieval village and I should respond with "Lol, nice man" in response to his irksome and pathetic actions?
I never said it was right. I never said you would be fully happy with what happened. What I was saying was to think that they thought that they could spend their energy on ruining something that is good in of itself. Why would you bother ruining something that is practically bad anyways?
As I said, look on the bright side, think positively. "Oh, I can't go to high school anymore, at least I won't have to deal with that awful teacher again!"
Thanks for proving that you are in fact a sociopath. I figure you'd ruin something bad because you're bad at the game yourself, it seems fitting. Things you think are good are probably bad anyway, you just think they're good because you play on garbage servers rofl.
I'll look on the bright side, but not how you'd imagine...
You see I go to a private "school" with these "whitelists" for students, it keeps the social dregs from public "schools" out. If a bully took my homework and burned it, I'd simply tell the "Dean of Students". Since my family has basically built the library wing, I have no problem getting a pass/extension to reprint my homework, reverting the damage in minutes. The dean then goes out of his way to make the bullies life a living hell, before expelling him(they usually just quit voluntarily far before then however). Have fun working at Taco Bell.
I am usually fully happy with what happens btw... It's pretty funny seeing a griefer lit on fire/hit by lightning/thrown hundreds of blocks into the air a few dozen times.

This forum has made me decide that I now want kids, so that when they get old enough, I can forbid them from coming here. it's a terrible place.
Griefing is made for the same reason hacking was, to make other people angry, and to let out anger and destructiveness on something that does not belong to them.
I Only Grief Abandoned Places. Places That No One Uses Anymore.

It is still considered griefing!, just case something is abandoned doesn't mean you can grief it, someone might come back to it!

No they are jealous of it and destroy it so that they are no longer jealous, and on the side they no longer have to collect resources.

I scored 36% on the Minecraft Trivia Quiz. How much do you know about Minecraft?
I fail to see the logic. Can someone help me?
A majority of griefers is over 1/2. You have not met that many griefers, and they all said that they do it for the same exact reason.
Please stop speaking for all griefers. Just because you do if for a reason doesn't mean that the others do.
I heard that griefers are jealous of your creations. Idk if this is right but I hope so.
