99% of them are unoriginal copycats of another server they think is cool, and 99% of those servers do nothing different other than milk the cash cow of what it's worth. And remember, this is minecraft. A game about createtivity but people just want to do what that other guy is doing and it drives me mad!
If there is one server like that then why copy it? Why can't we have originality on servers anymore?
I am developing a server and we aim to keep as much as possible as vanilla. Oh, and we build everything by hand (Or the new included world edit function)... So yeah... we do exist

I understand unoriginal servers that don't claim to be special and are just basic minecraft experiences, but when a server tries to enhance the minecraft gameplay by copying many other server that is when it gets annoying.
I find servers in general to be boring. I would rather play with friends on individual worlds, and keep the majority of the game intact, or customize with mods just the way I personally want it.
Once you get onto a server, you have lag (always, even if it's small) that makes combat less perfect, you have (generally) some kind of economy that switches up the game from a free experience into a constant grind/farm to get the good stuff, you have to travel a very far distance to find anywhere to build or gather, or use pre-built resource farms which takes the fun out of finding your own stuff.
Most servers have a hub area where all utilities are offered for free (crafting table, furnace, enchanting, brewing, etc) and it is completely safe, totally negating early game survival. The chat tends to be obnoxious, full of either begging or various trash talk.
PvP in this game is generally unbalanced and terribly uninteresting, without modding to add more weapons/playstyles. The best PvP experiences I have had have been on adventure map arenas built by myself or friends, where the entire experience is solely dedicated to balanced PvP with custom items and respawning power-ups. A server with a ton of people on it, or that isn't local to you (causing high latency) just makes you lag and it's a crap shoot whether you mash A harder or they do.
I would rather look at builds by downloading the map from someone, or by seeing really well-taken screenshots of the build at a good angle/perspective, than just have to wander to try and find it.
I just really don't see the point. A minecraft server has all of the worst parts of an mmo (irritating people, grinding, lack of early game challenge) and none of the best parts (actual well-designed content requiring groups, well-designed pvp that allows multiple balanced playstyles and not just button mashing). I keep my multiplayer to small, intimate games with close friends.
It's called advantages. Take the popular minecraft minigame Block hunt/Hide 'n' Seek, that is a very popular minigame. Many servers decided to copy it because thats what players like to play now. And the servers who made the game don't really own the right to the minigame, they just made it for the sake of their players enjoying it, imo.
The most original server I know is www.craftland.org, it's a server hosted in Germany but it has a vast amount of players from all over the globe. The main highlight of the server is the Aether mod. The players are nice, and the Admins are not a bunch of some guy's friends.
I hate it how people try and turn minecraft into a mediocre pseudo-PVP game because their mommas won't let them buy call of duty! It's even found it's way into minecraft songs! It's all about PvP and EvP now! If you want a song about PvP try another game, dammit!

Because to get into a good server, you can't just search on the internet. There ARE good servers, but they usually consist of 2 dozen or less active players, usually friends in real life, or met through another server. The best servers are private, so you can't really just "join".

I mean most servers, not all... and and don't just mean vanilla because that's as unoriginal as the copycat servers

Yes I realize that, but it's the 5% I was talking about
Even if you start up a fairly small (maybe 30 slots) survival plus essentials server, it might not be original, but you can gather quite a nice little community.
A server can either be innovative, which is risky and may not work, or it can throw together a collection of mods that they like to gather a certain audience. I like server with Factions and Mcmmo, so that's what I look for. You say servers are infinite copy-pastes? What do you want? A server is usually just a multiplayer Minecraft world with a handful of mods and maybe a starting zone. Do you want a revolutionary new combination of mods? Is that originality to you? Is it seeing the same modset over and over that annoys you so much? Or do you not like the setup? The central starting areas? Because if just having a starting area makes you this angry, I think you're angry at something deeper. What exactly is so unoriginal about servers in general that you can't stand? Because there really isn't all that much that can be different in the first place.

At a loss for words? Here's a few you can use: Welcome, to Night Vale...
There are some good servers, you must look hard for them though, did you ever try to open a server your own?
And so, I asked myself, in what server was there a place for men like me? Men who refused to say yes to the Parasites and the doubters. Men who believed that work was sacred and property rights inviolate. And then one day the happy answer came to me, my friends: there was NO server for people like me. And THAT was the moment I decided... to make one.
Bioshock is just so relateable.....
In all seriousness however, this is your best option, every server has its flaws but if you make your own, you can make it your own utopia for people who like your server style. At least, until a friendly Irishman comes along.....

And who are you, the proud lord said, that I must bow so low?
Only a cat of a different coat, that's all the truth I know.
In a coat of gold or a coat of red, a lion still has claws,
And mine are long and sharp, my lord, as long and sharp as yours.
And so he spoke, and so he spoke, that lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o'er his hall, with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall, and not a soul to hear.

Says the guy with a Five Nights at Freddy's mod signature...
Anyways, if you ever encounter a server which violates against the EULA (rules to make stuff fairer, eg donations may only be cosmetics), report it and it will be gone in no time.
Did you even read the post, it's not the donation things. I'm fine with being a cheap jackass. What i'm not fine with is every server being the exact same as each other
"There are other forums out there, why did they have to go and make this one?"
All servers are not the same. Even servers doing the same thing can be completely different experiences due to the people who operate it and the people who join it.
I think you'd have an issue either way. There are only so many ways to slice a Minecraft apple. You can have prison servers, parkour, RPGs, PvP, factions, simulators, free-for-all, straight vanilla, homo vanilla, chocolate and vanilla, towny, pixel art, and on and on; but eventually you run out of thing you can do with a Minecraft server.
Have an idea for something new? Make it. We'll wait here for your next post about how no one wants to play on your new server idea.
I don't like prison servers, PvP, or faction servers, but they must be popular due to the number of them out there with large populations. It just means I have to look a little longer and a little harder for what I want. But it's out there. if not, I am willing to make one for the small population that might want what I like. As of right now though, there is no need.

It's tough to come up with a new idea, so often times people repeat the past from what they know is successful.
I know it sucks, but there are some out there who strive for originality.... and in my world, it's just around the corner
And yet another inspirational quote:
“A poor original is better than a good imitation.”

no sig yay
Well... Considering that we do everything with command blocks, and nothing with plugins or mods, I consider that pretty original
