Welcome to the Farlander Trip 1.0! I will discuss about the Far Lands and the world boundary, along with some snapshots. I also have a question. What else makes a fake chunk a fake chunk besides the fact that it spawns after x/z=30,000,000 and that you can sink into it?

The far lands are the weird land generation beyond X=12550821 (Before beta 1.8). After that it gets even crazier when it comes to fake chunks and all that. http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Far_Lands
I liked the Far Lands much better in Beta; it was actually fun and worth seeing. And in 1.8 they totally ruined it. Whose dumb idea was it to make a stupid border around the map when you reached it? As if you would ever "accidentally" get there on survival!
Regarding your question about "fake chunks" this is because they hardcoded the 30 million limit into the game; specifically, when the code gets the block at a particular location it returns air (or 0 before 1.7) when it it outside of that range (as well as below y=0 or above y=255):
public Block getBlock(int x, int y, int z)
{
if (x >= -30000000 && z >= -30000000 && x < 30000000 && z < 30000000 && y >= 0 && y < 256)
{
// Code to get block here
}
else
{
return Blocks.air;
}
}
(you can see the actual code here; surprised it is still up because it is from Bukkit, has the same code shown above though, slightly modified from vanilla)
There is no clear reason for using this specific number, I guess they just choose a number that sounded reasonably high (the ultimate limit would be a bit over 2 billion, the limit of the 32 bit integers used for block positions; they could use 64 bit instead but there is little reason to go that high. In addition, terrain generation may eventually break down at some point; I presume the reason it happened at such a specific coordinate before Beta 1.8 is floating point rounding errors, the accuracy of single precision being around 7-8 digits, while doubles allow for around 15-16 digits of precision).

Well, the far lands was very laggy to generate because of it weirdness and strangeness. They made a border around the map because they didn't want you wandering too far i guess. But still, it was fun to have an infinite world.
BTW, there should be a mod that adds variety back to 1.8 biomes.
cool! i have wanted to check out the far lands (old style) but i have never done it out of lazyness :/ very nice

I wonder if anyone has ever reached it without "cheating". I.e., just walking/running/riding horse or boat (not even taking shortcuts through nether). How long would it take, do you suppose?

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?

But this thread was quite interesting and educational.
