Windows: Go to Start, type in %appdata%, then click on Roaming. In Roaming, find .minecraft. Go into .minecraft. Unzip and place the folder inside the "worlds" folder.
Mac: Go to finder, press command+shift+g, then type in '~/Library'. Find application support and click it. Find 'minecraft', and unzip the world you downloaded to the 'worlds' folder.
Well that is what I thought but there are subfolders /data, /DIM, /DIM1? I don't understand where those should be unzipped to.

A world folder consists of several files and several sub-folders.
All of this structure should be left as it is and unzipped into a folder in your worlds folder.
You should end up with a folder in your worlds folder with the name of the world and when you open that folder the sub-folders and files will be in it.

Just so my old mind is clear on this. I don't find a /world folder but a /saves folder. I unzip there?
Thanks,
Z.

I was puzzled by the mention of a "worlds" folder too.
Yes, on my Windows 7 machine the "saves" folder is under .minecraft and may be several levels down. Especially if you create separate save paths for different MC versions when you create new profiles.
(I personally keep my saved worlds in different paths depending upon which version was used to create them.) (It's an option in the profile editor.)
