I find it funny that on many PvP or HG servers, people often like to block with their sword from a distance as a means to team with the person that they see. Do they really think that they could make a proper team with someone they completely don't know, on a server where you're supposed to kill?
I usually just "pretend to team" with them by blocking sword also, and then when I gently walk up to the player, I start mercilessly attacking him to death.

I've never seen something like this. Is it a server where you can't talk with people or something, because normally my teams are made via talking directly.
It's funny actually, when someone else is doing it to me I sprint up and kill them mercilessly. When I do it to other players in hopes of them sparing my life (sometimes I even throw out items as a sacrifice) I'm really hoping that they're going to team with me. The second one is just plain cruel xP

I agree with your thinking. Communication is part of what makes a game good.
Sometimes I even this blocking fashion to others in hopes of them thinking I'm in a team with them, and then they walk up gently to me. Then I kill them once they are close enough.
Whenever someone blocks there sword at me I either don't block back and just kill them or I block back, but just walk away as just a temporary truce to not fight that one time.
Why not? There's a tactical benefit to teaming up. Right-clicking a couple of times is quicker and easier than typing out a message and risking an attack from your would-be ally before you are done writing: "Hey m8, wanna teamaddsadadsds noooooo!"
But yes, it's still taking a chance. Sometimes it works out, sometimes you get backstabbed. All part of the game.
I think he's trying to ask why it happened to be that type of symbol in the first place. My thought is that Youtubers started it (Such as AntVenom, which has been posted earlier). I think it just grew from there.
Perhaps my title was misleading, so I edited a little. Sometimes people do this symbol as a "truce", which means that even though they don't attack you they don't necessarily work together with you.
