That's one of Microsoft's quick ways to upgrade to Windows 10. If you use it, you will get a notification on July 29th when Windows 10 is released that lets you schedule an install.
When I accepted it, I got an email that told me that my copy was reserved and that it was going to automatically download Windows 10 once it is released. Hope that Frontier Communications's crappy internet completes the 3GB download properly.
I started playing video games when I was a kid on a Tandy Radio Shack Color Computer with 4K of RAM, saving games to cassette tape. I definitely feel old. :-)
I'm tentatively planing to upgrade to 10 as frankly my computer is overdue for a clean OS install, so I'm glad to hear Minecraft runs -- not that I was expecting differently.
I'm not surprised it works for Windows 10, since Microsoft owns Minecraft. It's always nice to have it confirmed though.
I'm not surprised not because it's owned by Microsoft (which is meaningless, many Office/Microsoft applications have their own compatibility issues) but rather because a Windows program has to do pretty extraordinarily dumb things to break on a later version of Windows.
Actually, the linked reddit post? That is absolute nonsense. It would seem the person posting does possibly does not work at Microsoft, as I would expect far better. Version information is not retrieved as a string. refer to the GetVersionEx() function; it retrieves OS version information as Major, Minor, revision, and Build. Windows Vista was 6.0. Windows 7 was 6.1, and Windows 8/8.1 is 6.3 (8 might be 6.2; but 8.1 is 6.3). Windows 10 is version 6.4.
These are the functions used to determine the version. There is no Version info function that returns a string in the Win32 API.
Regarding skipping versions, though, What people fail to realize also is this is not somehow new. Even if we look only at Microsoft...
Microsoft Word for Windows went from version 2.0 straight to version 6.
Microsoft Visual J++ went from Version 1.1 straight to version 6.0
Microsoft Visual Interdev went from Version 1.0 straight to Version 6.0.
Microsoft Access jumped from Version 2.0 to Version 7. Excel went from 5.0 to 7.0; Powerpoint went from 3.0 to 7.0.
It's all marketing more or less.
Actually, It's due to Windows 96. the way the programming works, if you decided to change to 'Windows 9' it would change to Windows 96. So, they were forced to use Windows 10.

You should read the post that you quoted.
And no, with "the way the programming works," if you change it to Windows 9... it would show up as Windows 6.4 or something similar if Microsoft didn't skip the number.

Go read JJBA and Fairy Tail! Oh, add me on Steam as well!
So what you're saying is that you CAN RUN Minecraft JAVA VERSION on Windows 10?!?!? The only reason I wasn't considering to update to Windows 10 was because of the new Minecraft Windows 10 edition

As long as you are running Windows 10 on a PC or tablet larger than 6 inches, than yes, you are 100% able to play the PC edition of Minecraft. The Windows 10 Edition is not intended to replace the PC edition and is free to owners of the PC edition anyway. (As for Windows 10 phones and very small tablets and phablets, they can only play the Windows 10 Edition.)
What is the source or evidence for your previous statement? How can you assert that every new windows version will make Minecraft "unplayable"? On what basis do you conclude that Minecraft was "optimized" (haha...) for Windows 7 and Mac systems? It was written in Java and isn't written in a way that runs faster on Windows 7 rather than other systems in any manner.
Yeah, a Windows update added that in.

Probably last of OS under the name "Windows". I can imagine they will come up with something new. Just like they decided to replace IE with Spartan.

My first "flavor" of windows was 3.11, muuuuch later came windows 95. Anyone else remember Windows BOB?
IMHO 10 will support it because it HAS to... otherwise people would just use Linux and Wine.... pun intended.

Don't be surprised if one day I take over the front page of the Forum Games, and then disappear for months at a time. It happens.

I was going to put a list of words of wisdom here, but I think I'll put this here instead

Yey
Windows 10 is not even out yet, so what's the point of the thread?
There's a Technical Preview out (and the RTM has been released)
Plus there's a ton of people who think that every Windows upgrade is going to make it so they can't play Minecraft
Which is exactly what's gonna happen. Minecraft is not optimized for any other OS besides Windows 7 and some forms of Mac.
Where did you hear this?
I can play Minecraft fine on Windows 8 and expect to play it the same on Windows 10.
Yeah and I bet it runs like absolute crap.

No, it runs fine.
