On one level I almost feel a little excited, on another a lot of dread. Minecraft is hands-down my favorite game ever and the only one that I intend to play off and on for perpetuity. Even Civilization, my first love, hasn't gotten the same replay value or affection, minecraft may be the first game ever that is infinitely replayable because the placement of every block in the world is unique. You only limit is your imagination. And playing with friends to build epic machines or structures is just an amazing feeling!
When I discovered how well mojang designed redstone (components not circuits!) that was when it sealed the deal. This is truly a masterpiece, mojang may have been slow with updates and bugs but one thing you could always count on was they would foster the community and give us new tools periodically to build even cooler things out of. I stil remember the thrill when hoppers/droppers came out. Over the space of 2 weeks I got on my prototypes single player game and redesigned every garden until I had invented a lot of automatic varieties.
This is the sort of thing I want to continue. I doubt these nice updates will be free, but I hope they continue, are relevant and in the spirit of minecraft, and are reasonably priced. I, for one, could see minecraft doing a deal where they realize slow but very thorough and nice updates on the cheap for maybe 2.50 per update. This would make them their billions back in no time, and I already know I'd be willing to pay for every one. If I see micro-purchases appear in-game I'm gonna burn things though...I doubt MS is that stupid though. I also expect MS to design and host their own santioned servers, worlds, projects, and forums/communities. If they play this right, a company like microsoft could really do a lot and give this community even nicer tools to do what we've always done. I, for one, hope they focus less on squeezing money out of the existing game and more on encouraging the nascent merchandizing, movie deals, and other things that have emerged.
A lot of existing services and companies make free money off mojang because mojang didn't care to sue them. Also, about 1/2 of players have pirated minecraft. legal copies are at 54 million, the 3rd biggest game ever according to an article I read, but I'd guess there's probably over 100 million players that pirated and play cracked servers or LAN, especially in places like china or overseas. It was just so easy to do with mojang being indie, not caring about money, and especially during beta when all those free executables were drifting around and offline mode. You didn't even need to know how to change any files to do it (I didn't but noticed this). If all microsoft does is crack down on pirating and make it harder to do it and still get the new content, they might get a flood of new users who have always played the game but never ponied up the money. We won't see this at all owning legal copies, but it'll make minecraft hundreds of millions. They probably will also insist on royalties now from companies that use minecraft to make money, and there are a lot. For instance, loads of servers and youtubers that make money off it for free. I'm guessing microsoft will find a way to protect their copyright better and get some of that. There is a LOT of money in minecraft. However, most of the money is above and below legal players. I'm guessing we won't feel changes for a while until Minecraft 2 with 64-bit graphics comes out or something. haha! There's a lot of improvement possible in minecraft as evidenced by the thousands of mods ppl play. I'm surprised Mojang didn't design 32 and 64-bit graphics textures and just add a slider to set the resolution you wanted. They kept saying they were protecting their players with older computers, but come on! Just add a slider to let the players choose. How hard right? And half the people I know use modded texture packs because of this. Probably one of microsoft's first moves will be to design their own, very nice, texture pack for a small fee.
Good comment. Very much appreciated. Agreed as well.

Fear is the best word to describe it. I'll admit it... I'm a LOT scared. Although, what's cool to think about is maybe the updates will be a bit more regular. Maybe THE MODDING API WILL GET POLISHED...
But there's a lot of WHAT IF's... I'm personally scared Microsoft will turn the Minecraft we all know and love into something... horrible. Like the XBOX 1...
Exactly what I don't want to happen. Would you really pay for some skins and stupid stuff like that? We might even have to pay for making texture packs. Youtubers that live with making Minecraft videos will probably stop! The community would tear apart!
What if they make a new update every month, with 2 or 3 new features and you'd have to pay it 5 bucks, when mojang's always released well made updates for FREE. I see this as a possible ruin of Minecraft, my favorite game of all time... I will probably just stick to 1.8... if they don't make us pay for getting a new account or something!
I will never respect the decision, we have the right to be pissed and scared with Microsoft's aquisition.
Don't you guys realise that EVERYTHING, including these forums is at risk of either disappearing or have horrible changes? Sure, there's the possibility that things might turn out just fine, or even better, but considering the fact that Microsoft ruined many games and companies by buying them out, we have the right to be mad at Notch for putting his biggest creation at risk!
Bro the forums are free... I highly doubt it will disappear... lol. I feel your pain bro. The best thing to do right now... Is just take a deep breath [I had to do this... lol] and just let it go. DOWNLOAD EVERY MOD FOR 1.7.10! Goooooooo. Set'em aside! This may be it! lol. Kidding... >_>

What's funny is that on the Playstation version... If I remember correctly, the skin packs DO cost money...
Microsoft has made some really nice and polished games in the past like Fable and Halo, but they are an aggressive business as well. The apprehension comes from not knowing what will happen to communities. For that, it's only speculation at this point, but I doubt Mojang sold to MS without talking over this first. Notch and the team wouldn't want the community ruined either, they said as much, and I'm sure they harangued with Microsoft about it too. I'm guessing MS understands they have to tread lightly--at least that's what I'm hoping. Their first move, as an unkown new owner, shoudl be to try and impress the fan base by adding new tools and showing they care. If they do this, they'll earn the loyalty of the community. If they don't it'll explode in their face...Microsoft I'm sure knows all of this and really wants to capture the whole community, spirit and all.

And that is something we can't really fear yet because we don't know what they are going to do. "The only we have to fear, is fear itself." - Roosevelt
OR... Or... They might blow us all away. And continue the work, and make that Modding API first.
MineCraft will live on..at it's current version...1.8...which like all of MC is a work in progress. Microsoft did not buy MC for fun..but for profit! You all are smart people..you can begin to think of the various ways that Microsoft will lock this game up to make it pay off. But the basic game and the mods/etc will live on..Microsoft might try to take that away..but can they? They have some pretty sharp programmers and are world class at fighting off hackers..But I think the game will live on..I am old enough to have played NWN1 and watched what happened to it after EA bought it out..It's still hanging on and dying ever so slowly.
Sure there are other games and games engines out there for free..but MC will never be free from Microsoft..just like their console version..constant updates/tracking your gaming habits and charging for every little thing..including a monthly fee for play..it's about money..not the community...the community is it's source of income..get real!?
It's hard to forget and leave your first love...no matter what game you play..change is inevitable..I look forward to Microsoft's take-over and am prepared to get my wallet out..it will cost..modders keep modding..you have made this sand-box game a delight..game on!

I think Microsoft needs to make a comment on this soon. Speculations are already going out of whack.
Well said, I pretty much agree with everything 100%. I don't mind if there are microtransactions personally; more content would be great even if it costs money. And it's always optional anyway; as long as they don't REMOVE features and charge money for them lol but that won't happen.
About the people making money, related to that - it all comes down to the fact that Mojang is a tiny company and just couldn't keep up with the customer demand, and they lack the manpower and working force behind it to really deliver on anything significant. With Microsoft backing it, we could see some *amazing* things. Not waiting 2-3 years for different wood-designed doors

well said friend, and this is the reason I am also excited. A company like microsoft could really do big things for minecraft, and wont' fall behind player demand. Mojang, only having like 10 employees just didn't have the manpower or energy to do all the things that would've been cool. Microsoft could put out 5 updates by Christmas, double the biomes again, and add a couple dozen new plants/trees/animals without breaking a sweat. It might be really cool.

I don't blame anyone, and I feel no anger towards Notch or the Mojang crew, Notch had enough, and for his own well-being had to let go. But I have seen what Microsoft has done to gaming and computers in general and I fear for Minecraft and the community.

Don't you realize that every time you walk out of the house, a Jumbo Jet could crash into your face? Seriously man, don't let the fear control you. And please don't accuse us of being ignorant and not realising the possible changes because we do, there's no need to get hysterical over it because there's literally nothing we can do about it anyway. Just try and stay calm and positive, instead of letting fear control us and becoming rage...

Just to clarify, Microsoft didn't make Fable or Halo - Lionhead Studios and Bungie did, Microsoft are publishers (they own Lionhead but don't own Bungie) but yeah they do have executive power/direction over Mojang now.
People are posting faster than I can reply, so I'm probably going to stop now. It's really sad to see all the pain so many people are feeling, when nothing has even happened yet. Uncertainty does terrible things to people
