they seem to be the second largest OS maker in the world next to apple a computer can't run without an OS
Apple doesn't come close to MS or Google(Android).
There are plenty of other OSs around, and there were before MS came along. If MS, and Windows, disappeared tomorrow we'd all just use something else.
You don't understand how awful I am at this... if it isn't an easy 'press here' button, I'm not able to do it... and the first reason I bought MC was to play with friends (which I have trouble doing because I cannot fathom the server setup)

I just want to dig a small hole and stay in it now....
And by the way, directing this at Notch is ignorant. You can not rightfully judge a person who is in a completely different circumstance than you are. On the surface, he seems like the nicest, most genuine guy. I know that if I met him personally, I would immediately like him as a man. Turning on this teddy bear programmer of a guy is a testament to the pettiness and non-appreciation of a spoiled, consume-first, produce second (or never) populace.
Hate in Notch's direction is really getting under my skin.
They helped provide an operating system that was mass-marketable...instead of being in a few fringe homes, people in the MIDWEST and RURAL AREAS (where I live) got computers. If not for MIcrosoft my schools wouldn't have gotten computers, nor would my library. This happened like, 20 years ago, yeah, but still...if they could proliferate to where most households have a windows operated something...they'll find a way to get minecraft to every home and every device.
My schools had computers before MS.
BBC, Archimedes...
Half the kids in class had Commodore 64s, Amigas, Atari STs...
And I lived in a rural area: a farming island 50 km long.
Honestly, I just can't see myself GIVING Microsoft the fruits of my labor.
I'm staring at these textures, ready for Carpenter Blocks, I'm staring at this file with probably 300 hours of work in it . . . just the cobblestone texture took about 8 hours to get really good. And the pumpkins and the flowers . . . sigh.
Do I just feed them to the giant.
It doesn't feel like contributing anymore, I feel kind of used.
I do NOT want to "hurt Minecraft." I do want to know what Microsoft is going to do for the Modders, Artists, Players, Server Operators, and community. So . . . Microsoft owns the shares, what are they going to do that's going to convince me to keep contributing?
How many other modders or artists are waiting to see if they should update or contribute more.
I'm waiting . . . is it going to be butter side up or butter side down?
you were doing it for Mojang before? That's odd. Most modders I know did what they did for the community which is still the same community. The community that's scared right now that people like you will freak out and kill modding because a different company owns Mojang now. Microsoft has done nothing wrong so far and people are already jumping to conclusions.

Sure, it's for for the community, and for the challenge/fun of doing it. But before, texturing or modding produced a mild benefit for the company that was actually responsible for the platform existing. It didn't seem objectionable to me that Mojang made a little money from what I did. Now, though, MS is probably going to figure out a way to make money from *existing* users so providing content makes a lot of money for a company that *didn't* help make Minecraft. I hurts to realize that if your efforts are successful one of the largest companies in the world will make substantial money for and they didn't do diddly to earn it.

Geographicraft (formerly Climate Control) - Control climate, ocean, and land sizes; stop chunk walls; put modded biomes into Default worlds, and more!
RTG plus - All the beautiful terrain of RTG, plus varied and beautiful trees and forests.

From this point on MS is responsible for minecraft's continuing existence.
Why object to helping them slightly, especially when you're also helping the community.
Well I have no idea why my initial comment got deleted, but suffice to say this is disappointing and MSFT tends to smother their acquisitions, not nurture them. In before the $9.99 monthly fees...
Hopefully the all of the Mojangstas still continue to develop Minecraft, and that Microsoft will not pull the plug on Youtubers being able to make money off of it. It was a real move what Notch did, selling Minecraft .
Hey, know the facts before you judge somebody like that, buddy.

[quote] I don’t see myself as a real game developer. I make games because it’s fun, and because I love games and I love to program, but I don’t make games with the intention of them becoming huge hits, and I don’t try to change the world. Minecraft certainly became a huge hit, and people are telling me it’s changed games. I never meant for it to do either. It’s certainly flattering, and to gradually get thrust into some kind of public spotlight is interesting.
A relatively long time ago, I decided to step down from Minecraft development. Jens was the perfect person to take over leading it, and I wanted to try to do new things. At first, I failed by trying to make something big again, but since I decided to just stick to small prototypes and interesting challenges, I’ve had so much fun with work. I wasn’t exactly sure how I fit into Mojang where people did actual work, but since people said I was important for the culture, I stayed.
I was at home with a bad cold a couple of weeks ago when the internet exploded with hate against me over some kind of EULA situation that I had nothing to do with. I was confused. I didn’t understand. I tweeted this in frustration. Later on, I watched the This is Phil Fish video on YouTube and started to realize I didn’t have the connection to my fans I thought I had. I’ve become a symbol. I don’t want to be a symbol, responsible for something huge that I don’t understand, that I don’t want to work on, that keeps coming back to me. I’m not an entrepreneur. I’m not a CEO. I’m a nerdy computer programmer who likes to have opinions on Twitter.
As soon as this deal is finalized, I will leave Mojang and go back to doing Ludum Dares and small web experiments. If I ever accidentally make something that seems to gain traction, I’ll probably abandon it immediately.
Considering the public image of me already is a bit skewed, I don’t expect to get away from negative comments by doing this, but at least now I won’t feel a responsibility to read them.
I’m aware this goes against a lot of what I’ve said in public. I have no good response to that. I’m also aware a lot of you were using me as a symbol of some perceived struggle. I’m not. I’m a person, and I’m right there struggling with you.
I love you. All of you. Thank you for turning Minecraft into what it has become, but there are too many of you, and I can’t be responsible for something this big. In one sense, it belongs to Microsoft now. In a much bigger sense, it’s belonged to all of you for a long time, and that will never change.
...so yeah there's that. But it is also because they have no choice but to continue it. The deal was already done, when they bought Mojang they also bought all their contracts. 4J is licensed to develop and update it for all platforms that it is already out on. Thus, PS4/Vita editions will still receive updates. This is similar to...say...Marvel granting Sony licensing rights to X-Men and Spider Man. Then they started Marvel Studios, however due to them licensing these IPs out they could not make movies based on their own characters (Even the appearance of Quick Silver and Scarlet Witch in Captain America 2 and Avengers 2 has a lot of loopholes. They cannot call them Mutants or even hint at their parentage). And now that Disney owns Marvel, they are still bound by that same contract: They cannot make (live-action) X-Men or Spider Man movies since Sony still has the license. 4J has the licensing to develop MineCraft for the 360, XBox one, PS3, PS4, and Vita. All of those platforms will remain supported.
HOWEVER this means that no new competitor platforms will likely have Minecraft. Though Microsoft did say they will likely leave that decision up to the platforms creators, meaning they are still open to putting it out there on the other platforms.
And do you know why they would actually want to put them on other platforms?
Because the more platforms it is on, the more money they will make. And they know that...and they smart for understanding that. They do not plan for MineCraft to be an Xbox exclusive. They bought MineCraft to push on their Windows phones, it really had nothing to do with the console versions.
The last part is invalid. By limiting it to their own OS their forcing players to buy their own systems which would anger a lot of people. If what you say about 4J is true though then Minecraft should be safe on other platforms at least for the time being. If Microsoft does make a Minecraft 2 though like Mojang originally was going to do then any and all current contracts will be meaningless (including the agreement of no paid updates since it wont be Minecraft 1)

Not jumping, just waiting. I'm also not feeling very enthusiastic about working on my new narrow arm skin, and I have the new California Poppies almost done but I can't seem to work up the enthusiasm. I was working on my Samurai woman skin with new narrow arms and cool Japanese style armor. Now I just can't seem to work on it. And btw . . . I have been so very stoked about the 1.8 changes. Now I'm just hovering. Maybe if I knew forge was going to come out soon. Right now I just feel lethargic and kind of unhappy.
microsoft purchased mojang for 2million dollors and i heard a rumor that they plan to STOP all minecraft plans for xbox PS2 and PS3 no PSVITA and i believe microsoft also plans to eliminate single player and anyone making servers plugins etc will be sued and may charge 9.00$ to 14.00$ a week for people to have a minecraft account and play minecraft. people... we are seeing the end of minecraft but... there may be a new hope! there is a rumor that microsoft ALSO plans to make a minecraft 2! however i do not know if this rumor is true or not. so people say goodbye to minecraft i will always miss it :(:( soon minecraft will be dead, goodbye minecraft. People play minecraft while you can soon you wont get that chance.
PS: someone locked my thread when i posted this and told me to say what i said here if hes reading this dont issue a warning on me because i did what you told me to do.
Research before posting. Posts like this are slowly becoming a pet peeve of mine.
Mojang clearly stated, that very little is going to change. Jeb is still the lead designer of Minecraft. The Mojangstas aren't going anywhere. And your post makes absolutely no sense. Why would Microsoft spend 2.5 billion dollars, on a game that they would just kill off half of the playerbase to? That would just not be a sensible investment. That would be why they kept Jeb and the crew. They know how to run the game off of the community.
Minecraft will be just fine. It is going to continuously update across platforms, consistently. Phil, the guy who is in charge of everything Xbox, even stated that they are going to keep updating Minecraft on it's home platform, the PC.
People are overreacting, exactly like they did when the EULA was enacted. And look - very little changed. I love the Minecraft community; it is an active, lively community, but they sure love the drama.
Its not over reacting. When companies buy another out they start changing everything. Games such as Runescape have already become a victim of this.
Can we not just be happy that Notch & all the other people at Mojang got the pay day they so richly deserved? Can't we than them for enriching our lives with their creativity? They gave us this game, it got huge & not everyone is cut out to be a CEO. People think it's easy to run a company this big, but it's brutally stressphul. With all Notch has done 4 us, doesn't he deserve some rest?
One way or another he was not going to run this company 4 ever so lets not act like we didn't know this would eventually happen. This was always going to happen. The only thing we didn't know is when.
All I hear is people asking "how will this impact my game?" & "What about my server?" & "What do I get out ov it?"; all me, me, me. No one seems to care about Notch's well being. Notch is a human being people! He is not a slave! We are all guilty of abusing this man. Every single one of us & I include myselph in this. He's not leaving, we drove him away. He's tired & wants to do other things with his liphe but we wont let him. We have thrust this god like mantle on him, called him our leader & made him out to be some kind of Indy gaming messiah. I know some of you think I am exaggerating but some people have actually in game! Even if it's only meant as a joke, that is still a lot ov responsibility 4 one man to bare!
We'd all break under that much pressure, so stop.
Stop worrying about how this is going to impact the game; Stop asking "is this is the end?"; & stop asking "what about me?" What about you? You spent 20 bucks & got to play an awesome game 4 a couple years. That's a good deal any way you cut it; quit complaining.
