I advocate this just as added insurance to never have the world save problems people are posting about. If you're smart and on the ball and like to have a profile that always uses the current version, that's fine. But if you're not paying attention you can inadvertently open a save in a newer game version, and if you're not doing backups, you could be potentially screwed.
Tip #1: Learn how use the launcher.
Tip #2: Learn how to manage multiple profiles (this essentially is how to manage version control).
Tip #3: Never, ever *EVER* have a profile set to use "Current Version".
Tip #4: Backup your saves. I do it daily and use a backup utility to do it.
Tip #5: Learn how to create multiple game directories. This keeps saves between versions separate.
