Being that it is the #1 All time selling PC game and it has only been out for 5 years. This is one of those games that like, Doom, Myst, heck even Pac-Man, a very classic game that people still play today. This game has launched an open world to building games to come, some may be better, some will never make it. However everyone will look back and say - they got this idea from Minecraft.
This game will go down in the books as one of the best PC Building games ever. Right up there with SimCity, before EA took it over.
So being the game has already been out for 5 years, I think its just getting started with the potential it has. I think there can be so much more to this game and only time will tell.
If it looks like minecraft is going to die, I will buy it and continue it. I will get those M0JANG members who wish to continue it and not change it in any selfish ways. That is how much i love it.

I agree. The possibilities for minecraft are endless. The graphics aren't the most realistic, but has that stop people? No.
Given that it pretty much has infinite replay value for a very cheap price (30 dollars for infinite replay value makes it the cheapest video game), I can see it last a VERY long time. Even after Mojang stops updating it, there will be players still playing, and people will make mods to make things more interesting.
Take Super Mario World for example. That game was made a long time ago. But thanks to SMWCentral, people are now making lots of romhacks, so the popularity remains. Similarly, even if Mojang were to shut down, people would continue making mods to keep Minecraft interesting.
The thing that fundamentally limits how long minecraft can go is that you only pay once. I know that sounds good to you, but Minecraft is one of the best selling games of all time. Eventually, everybody who is interested will have bought the game, and growth will slow. That isn't yet, but it would be coming in the next few years, I think. After that, Mojang will either need to add expansion packs or some other method of getting money.

I heard that when mojang is done with the game completely then they will release the source, multi-player is one my main concerns but I could see mojang making it so that auth servers are not required as a possibility.

Minecraft will last a long time until another big hit game comes out. (Which I hope doesn't happen). And then still lots of people will play minecraft. Eventually the generation that plays minecraft will die. And then it will be less populated and then it might be brought back up by some kid.

Unless someone buys Minecraft (please no!) then a really long time. Probably become a classic like everyone said. The only possible downfall is if someone makes the graphics realistic...

Well, Mojang said EULA would be in effect for 10 years, so it would probably still be around in 10 years. Mojang is always right, atleast 90% of the time.
I think 5-10 years and then it dies
