i want to make a small minecraft server for me and my friends to play on. but im not sure the risks of doing so... i heard that it may open holes in the firewalls destroying your security. anybody have any advice on the topic?
I'd make sure that the hosting website you are buying from is trustworthy. Read reviews and whatnot to make sure you're really getting what is promised. My buddy and I got cheated out of some money while trying to create one. Although it was a minuscule amount, We were still ripped off.
well you see, i dont plan on paying for the server... really just having it on when im on sorta deal. and being jipped isnt my main concern... its getting viruses or being hacked that got me on edge.

No, only requests for minecraft will go to minecraft and any request for minecraft asking it to hack into your files will be rejected by minecraft.
Port forwarding is safe and the safest. Hamachi is NOT safe.
Depends on what kind of a server you'd like to create. Also, does it require a program(hamachi for e.g.),hosted?
Hamachi servers are easy to break through,so i wouldn't create one like that.
Hosted server is much more better, doesnt need a program or anything, its 24/7,console is all yours...But,you'll have to search for some websites which don't have insane prises and some shitty features.
I recommend you to use mcprohosting.com , since it's good(had a server hosted from it). I hope this helps!
p.s Watch out! There might be some fake hosting website which only takes your money, like cjr413 said.

triangle.gs offers free hosting, but you only have 512 mb ram, which is fine for up to 10 players (or maybe 20 if using vanilla server).
The best would be to host it yourself. Do the port forwarding, it's safe. I've hosted a server on my computer (and it was a bit too successful ), i had up to 20-30 players on it!!! (Players love free op )

I turned it into a creative server because one player still wanted to build a house. I want to get rid of it.
