I think there are some legit reasons for Mojang to start working on an outright sequel to Minecraft. The biggest reason in my opinion, is that Minecraft currently suffers from the fact that it started as a Java game and is thus still limited by that fact. I think a sequel to Minecraft made from the ground up using something else than Java would allow for a much better experience. I also think that Minecraft just deserves a sequel in general because of how sucessful it is.
Here is what I would like to see from a sequel (feel free to add your own suggestions):
-Is made on something else than Java.
-Has improved graphics but still keeps it's blocky visual style.
-Easier to mod.
-Better performance on lower-end machines thant the current game.
-Even more customizable game starts for an even greater sandbox experience.
-More things to do other than just mine ore and build things with it.
I bet people have a million other ideas.
Do you feel Mojang should start working on a sequel? And if so what would you like to see in it?
I have thought about this as well. Now that I have thought about it, no. No they shouldn't. Why? Minecraft receives updates. If Mojang were to work on a sequel to Minecraft and make updates to the original and second, that would be really messed up. So my final quote is that Mojang should NOT make a Minecraft 2.

At the moment, I would say that 90% of all of the best content for Minecraft comes from user made mods and not Mojang. I am currently playing using the tekkit mod/technic pack, and it easily adds way more awesome stuff into the game than Mojang ever did. I don't think we would lose anything from Mojang starting work on Minecraft 2 even if it would not no longer getting any real updates for the original Minecraft.
I don't think that is something they should happen or will happen. Minecraft is a game with pretty unlimited potential. Over time, it will continuously be updated and optimized so that the gaming experience will improve and continue to draw in more people. Committing to a new game would be a huge time and monetary investment.
If they changed the game a great deal, I think it would be viewed as a departure from what Minecraft is and always was. They would fail to grab must of the user base that exists now. If they don't change the game much, people would call it a money grab and say it would have been better to just implement the changes in a patch.

Why do they need Minecraft 2? Minecraft is an unlimited potential. Minecraft receives updates. They would probably lose the player base they have now too. Why bother to make a sequel?

Nothing has unlimited potential, and this is all the more true if it is made with Java. Notch has said he would make Minecraft 2 at some point anyway (though he also said we would finish Scrolls first).
And why would the player base go away? The player base for CoD hasn't gone away, nor the player base for Madden.
you do realize that everything you suggested (except ditching java) could be implementined into Minecraft how it is now right? I don't see any reason for a Minecraft 2.

Perhaps he was referring to the April fools joke? In a way, we already have Minecraft 2.

-Why would they make it on something else than Java? Java is fairly easy to code as far as coding terms, and is very flexible and lots of things can be done with it.
-Improved graphics is not needed, as we have resource packs, and it would ruin the traditional look of Minecraft. Not to mention it would kill older computers.
-It wouldn't be easier to mod.
-I doubt that, providing the description of the other notes.
-Minecraft is enormous as it is. There's mods, plugins, command blocks, and your normal modes.
In the end, there would not be a sequel. Besides, its not needed as there is normal updates.
People act as if Minecraft won't get competition sometime down the road from any other dev.........lol. It would be foolish to think that way.
The number 1 reason to make a Minecraft 2......don't let anyone make your idea better before you get the chance to since you already have the name brand. MC 1 will survive for a long time on community mods alone.
why do you need a sequel if updates keep getting released?
Read my last post, the updates that have been released over the course of the last year could of easily been duplicated by modders....MC 1 doesn't need Mojang for its development really anymore.
That is true. However, the same thing would happen to Minecraft 2, so why not just keep it one Minecraft?
B/c the game is taking care of itself with community support ,this way we get a new game with improvements that might not be able to be done on the current engine in an optimal way. Think of real mountain ranges and near endless view distance(exaggeration on endless but you get my meaning). These are things that are really limited in the current game and always will be. At the very least they should start planning now b/c people have been playing Minecraft since 2009-2010 really is when it got popular...planning now and set your goal for 3 - 4 years that would mean MC 1 had a span of almost a decade before the sequel. Time flys and I don't think people have realised this.

This is wrong my friend. We need Mojang just as much as they need us. Minecraft2 is unneeded. Competition will not be a problem,Updates, regularly. Of course there will always be others trying to accomplish what Mojang has. Jumping on the Bandwagon.

Modding is simple and easy, once you learn how. Here's all the code for my testing mod.(It's fine to copy/paste it. It's missing a few things for it to work, folder names, stuff like that.
@Mod(modid = TestingMod.modid, version = TestingMod.version) public class TestingMod { public static final String modid = "testingmod"; public static final String version = "Dev 0.1"; public static Potion potionMagicPotion; public static Block magic_ore; public static Item itemMagicDust; public static Item itemHeatCrystal; public static Item itemColdHeatCrystal; public static ItemTool toolMagicPickaxe;
static ToolMaterial materialMagic = EnumHelper.addToolMaterial("Magic", 3, 1000, 3, 2.0F, 30); public void generate(Random random, int chunkX, int chunkZ, World world, IChunkProvider chunkGenerator, IChunkProvider chunkProvider) { world.setBlock(chunkX*16 + random.nextInt(16), 100, chunkZ*16 + random.nextInt(16), TestingMod.magic_ore, 5, chunkZ); } public static CreativeTabs miseroTab = new CreativeTabs("TestingTab"){
@Override public Item getTabIconItem() { // TODO Auto-generated method stub return itemMagicDust; } }; @EventHandler public static void preInit(FMLPreInitializationEvent e){
itemColdHeatCrystal = new Item().setUnlocalizedName("itemColdHeatCrystal").setCreativeTab(miseroTab).setTextureName(modid + ":" + "itemColdHeatCrystal").setFull3D().setPotionEffect("Strength"); GameRegistry.registerItem(itemColdHeatCrystal, "itemColdHeatCrystal"); itemMagicDust = new Item().setUnlocalizedName("itemMagicDust").setCreativeTab(miseroTab).setTextureName(modid + ":" + "itemMagicDust"); GameRegistry.registerItem(itemMagicDust, "itemMagicDust"); magic_ore = new MagicOre().setBlockName("magic_ore").setBlockTextureName(modid + ":" + "magic_ore"); GameRegistry.registerBlock(magic_ore, "magic_ore"); itemHeatCrystal = new Item().setUnlocalizedName("itemHeatCrystal").setCreativeTab(miseroTab).setTextureName(modid + ":" + "itemHeatCrystal").setFull3D(); GameRegistry.registerItem(itemHeatCrystal, "itemHeatCrystal"); GameRegistry.addShapelessRecipe(new ItemStack(Items.diamond), new Object[]{ new ItemStack(itemMagicDust), new ItemStack(Blocks.gold_block) }); GameRegistry.addShapelessRecipe(new ItemStack(Items.gold_ingot), new Object[]{ new ItemStack(Blocks.iron_block), new ItemStack(itemMagicDust) });
GameRegistry.addSmelting(itemColdHeatCrystal, new ItemStack(itemHeatCrystal), 1); GameRegistry.addSmelting(magic_ore, new ItemStack(itemMagicDust), 1); GameRegistry.addShapelessRecipe(new ItemStack(itemColdHeatCrystal), new Object[]{ new ItemStack(Items.blaze_powder), new ItemStack(itemMagicDust) }); GameRegistry.addShapelessRecipe(new ItemStack(itemMagicDust), new Object[]{ new ItemStack(Items.book),new ItemStack(Items.book),new ItemStack(Items.book) ,new ItemStack(Items.book),new ItemStack(Blocks.lapis_block),new ItemStack(Items.book), new ItemStack(Items.book),new ItemStack(Items.book),new ItemStack(Items.book) });
There is no point for a sequel because we will get updates. A sequel will make us have to spend more money, it would divide minecraft 1 players and minecraft 2 players. A sequel would just hurt the minecraft community.
