I am considering making a city server with a semi realistic economy and such. The currency would probably be emeralds. If emeralds didn't work out then I would just use a plugin to handle the virtual money. The city would be a typical city with a town hall/spawning area in the middle, and then have Residential, Commercial, Industrial, Rural, and Urban zones (I may not include all those zones in the city if some seem unnecessary). I would basically base the city off this tutorial from the Minecraft Wiki: http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Tutorials/Building_a_metropolis
Players would start out with some tools, armour, and some amount of emeralds (Which I haven't determined yet ). They could then go out of the city boundaries in the wilderness to collect/mine/farm resources and then sell them to the government shop in the town hall. Eventually they could buy a plot in the city and make a house, or a building, or even create their own shop. They could work their way up the ranks, and eventually become one of the servers richest people and own a big mansion or even a skyscraper. Alternatively, when your starting out, instead of mining/farming in the wilderness, you could get a job working for someone else on the server and save up for a plot that way.
My only concern is that this kind of server needs a fair amount of people in order to work and be fun, and I don't want to work hard on the server and then open it, just to find out that nobody wants to play. Before I make the server, I need to know that there would be a lot of people who would like to play. This would be a good opportunity to play from the beginning and become very wealthy on the server, so by the time the server grows very large (which hopefully it will) you will be one of the server's elite players.
Look, as long as the server isnt like "SPLEEF! SKYBLOCK! HG! MINIGAMES!" (ie unoriginal minigames" I would support it instantly. But this idea sounds great!
Do you want to make it like real life? You could have a road system using horses or pigs and carrots. The carrots could be "gas" that needs to be bought.
You could have a casino where players play with their emeralds. There could be a minigames zone in the city with favourites such as SPLEEF, however keep these to a minimum. You want to stay a city server, not a minigame server.
You could also have laws if you want to make it real life. Hire some policemen to patrol the server (basically moderators). Come up with some punishments such as fining emeralds using server commands, and put in a jail!
The city idea is really good and no server has done it well. I would love to help and give total support. Private message me or reply here. I'll think up some new ideas.
PS: I think I started the metropolis tutorial
Thats exactly my aim for this server. All the other city/economy servers I could find were all huge servers where the city world was only one of their many Factions, PvP, Minigames, and MineZ worlds, and not their main focus. I want to make a server solely focused on being a great city server because I feel that there is a lack of them in the minecraft community. I also really like your suggestions. I will definitely use some of them if I follow through with this idea. Thanks for the feedback!
I'm not going to be really interested to be honest.

A server like this would be AMAZING! I'd definitely play this. And the idea earlier of a few small minigame arena's, maybe being able to compete in tournaments to win a large sum of emeralds, would be really cool! (Spleef would be a great example, similar to Slamacow's 'The Game of Spleef' animation). But yeah I'd be really interested if you made a large private message group or something, I'd definitely like to know if this opens up. Another cool thing would be if very rich players could create their own 'outpost' settlements out in the wilderness, with the perks that there's large quanities of untouched resources, but you could be raided or attacked by enemy settlements, but if you play it right you could eventually have a massive network of outposts, trading resources and traveling across trade routes between cities. Imagine a caravan of Mule's carrying diamonds from the wilderness, and they're attacked by a band of raiders/bandits who aim to steal the diamonds for their own use. An element like that, outside the safety of the Capital, would be really interesting.
Thanks for all the helpful feedback guys! I will post any new information regarding the server on this thread.
(whoops, I accidentally posted this twice... I guess this new update will need some getting used to :P)

I have gone on servers like this before and the only problem is I feel I have less freedom in a compacted city. Also, a glitch free economy could take some work. If all fits and there's a smooth economy, then that would be a server I would join

I always had this idea. I'd very much love to play on such a server, but the issue will be how to collect the amount of players... maybe NPCs can replace them until they come?
