Wrong, Minecraft remains the same, minecraft server remains the same. Bukkit runs along side of minecraft. It doesn't not modify anything internally. Again, EULA is nothing, I have read EULA on alot of games, but half of them are just for legal purposes. Normally no one goes around and breaks the serious rules: Selling Minecraft as a non-retailer.
Which is my point here. We are given the right to run a servers, we run them, how we want to run them. Mojang has no "Control" over them. If they want control, then they should take it. We are coders, so are they. Add a security check, add a login system. Minecraft client requires you to login to play, so why not start making the server too? They can then keep control of their players and the servers. If not, these rules are...void.
Again, SPOT ON.
We are working on our hard worked servers, using plugins, mods, features, and uniqueness. He is right, there are over 100k servers other there...so the server you joined requires a bit of moo-la to do what you can do in single player? JOIN ANOTHER SERVER.
I'm sure 1 server out of 100k will have the right needs for a player, if not, make a new one yourself, then we have 100,001 servers.
I see no flaw in this system, just lazyness. This only encourages lazyness, not development.
Ehh... I'd argue not entirely laziness. The key issue with servers, is FINDING the good servers. There's so many damn servers out there, it's hard to get the good servers noticed and off the ground. It's far from cheap in time or finances to get a server up and into a successful field, even as a decent, fair, unique server simply due to the start up logistics and the burn out you experience attempting to do so. Though, i have no real idea how to offer a way to get around this in a simple way.
But again, it's really down to the players. Don't pay for the bad, the bad goes away. Really simple 101 of economics.

I totally agree, if people ignore the crappy servers, they will die. However, too many people have bad IQ levels, so the economy gets inflated...
Also, my theory on this subject is. Mojang noticed that MineCraft realms was a success since basically mojang provides a minecraft server for you, but they have COMPLETE control over it.
Now they want to do the same with those that are not using realms, good luck with that.

You are given the right to run a server...for a game made by Mojang. They made the game, they make the rules, and breaking them violates the Minecraft EULA. Owning a server doesn't automatically give you the right to do whatever you want with no consequences.

FACT: Owning "a Server" is not a crime. FACT: A server is a machine that runs on a cpu, psu, etc hardware. FACT: a server is not minecraft. FACT: Minecraft server is a software that runs on hardware, software can be changed to run to your choosing the way you intend it to run.
If I don't want windows to save my files in my documents, by god, I will make windows do what I want, not microsoft. The same applies to minecraft with mojang. I have a LICENSE, I repeat, a LICENSE to use the software, to and however I wish.
AFAIK, I cannot sell the license, hence THAT would violate the rules.
And they are more than welcome to take the right away from me to run and host a server. Good luck hacking into the server box and shutting it down. I welcome their attempt. The ONLY thing i see wrong and is against the rules. I selling minecraft, or a server without the license to do so...
That's like selling alcohol without a license. However, if I am running a server, which is a service of my own terms and permissions, is fully under my control...
again, if MOJANG wants to control servers, let them add a login to system to the server client. Is that so hard? Let's see how long it takes for you to ragequit when you try to run a server but it says:
Please entire login information...
*Enters login information*
checking...
Sorry, you are not allowed to host a server online, you have violated EULA. Server is set to LAN MODE only.
I agree with everything I have read so far and I personally believe that Mojang is now just tearing the minecraft community apart.
Notch, and later Mojang, fell asleep on the guard for far too long and allowed the community to become this way over time, and indeed it is going to be expensive and difficult to try and cure it at this point. I wish them best of luck, however they have planned to do it.

GG.
Practically speaking they could just block your server's IP from connecting to the account authentication server. This would prevent anyone from actually connecting to your server.
(Well unless you are really unethical and run yours in offline mode.)

I do that anyway from the getgo, which is why we have bukkit, nothing wrong with offline mode. IT allows you to join the server period. My point is, they need a fool proof online verfication, which is your login information. You cannot run a server, the same way you cannot play minecraft without an account you paid for. Which means if you did run a server, you are violating a rule: Piracy.
Great, so the new server EULA exception says that you can't charge for ranks or game mechanics, just for entry. So now servers will be charging for entry. No money, no entry. I thought Mojang was a small indie company that got rich off of a wildly successful game but still humbly acts as an indie developer. INDIE DEVELOPERS DO NOT DO THIS CRAP! I hate OP donations as much as anybody... but I'll hate being charged to play servers even more!
Report you for illegally acquiering money through someone else's property. They have control over the Minecraft copy you base your server off of.
What property? The server? Last I checked, they do not OWN my server, this is why I do not USE REALMS. My own server box, my own hardware, my own internet connection, my own network. The only thing I am using is minecraft server.exe or java. Which is free to download on their site, on top of that, bukkit, also free...
the rest is configurations, plugins, etc...
No violations here, just hard coded work, I can charge for anything I want on my server, even if its a wooden sword (stupid example), I cannot however, SELL minecraft or a server...that is against the rules. It, that is like me controlling you to breath. Every time you take a breath, you have to pay me $50. I am in control here, not you.
I also am intrigued as to how minecraft can say you're not allowed to have a charge for something added via plugins. Last I checked minecraft has no economy. How can they add any rule regarding something that had no attachment to it?

Because this is about two things: Power and Control

You are already dancing over that Piracy line by running your server in offline mode. It lets anyone connect even those who have pirated the game.
Another thought to consider is that server hosts will probably update their own terms to reflect Mojang's. So all Mojang might need to do is send a note to the host and have them take your server down. (Obviously this is only an issue if you don't self-host.)
So there are a number of things they can do to discourage most people.

I despise this new system. I'll continue running my server as I always have. I work my hardest not to make 'pay-to-win' systems in my donation perks. I've always hated that style of gameplay, and have avoided certain servers like the plague in order to make sure I'm not affected by it. Yet, as somebody who has fought against that aspect of minecraft's community for 3 years now, I find that I'm breaking Mojang's new EULA.
1. I refuse to charge players to access my server. You want to stop pay-to-win? Well, pay-to-win becomes an absolute when you completely cut out the ability to compete without money. Just because a server feels like they're pushed into a corner with your new EULA terms, thousands of players will now be unable to access the servers they love, due to the fact that they've changed to this new system.
2. A purely donation based server won't last long. Even when ran well, it's hard to meet monthly payments and population demands when there's no incentive for donation. On top of this, there's absolutely no way to track and determine whether we provide perks after the "donation" has taken place. An anonymous chest of goodies appearing outside of somebody's house can't really be traced.
This 'rule' is just silly. It's like the standard "No Running In the Hall" rule. It's only there to attempt to push people into walking based on the fear of the very, very, very minor amount of people who actually get caught doing so.
3. I'll just skip this bit about in-game advertisement. I don't think I have to go over why I don't plan to include this in my roleplay environment.
4. Can't sell in-game currencies? Well, I sell creditpoints which can be used for cosmetics. Now, I'm well aware that it doesn't go against their "As long as it doesn't affect gameplay" tidbit, but just the fact that I can be 'reported' to Mojang for something like this is absolutely childish.
I think that last bit pretty much wraps up how I feel about all this. Childish.
I feel like Mojang is attempting to play schoolteacher with all its subjugates right now, and I don't appreciate it in the slightest. Whether I'm in violation or not, this sort of Big Brother behavior is completely and utterly unnecessary, and makes me want to avoid running a server.
That and the notion of paying to play is ridiculous I'd rather anyone able to join, donate for in game ranks to support the server with the reward of non vanilla permissions and not say hey sorry guys if you don't have money you don't enjoy what the community creates with unique custom coded server styles. I'm extremely shocked at how mojang wishes to go about this , it seems like a money attack to draw more servers to realms than allowing the community to grow as it wishes
Just selling.

Probably both. Anyway, I wonder how they will deal with this.

And yes, I am still the Master of Disaster.
And for anything that doesn't give a player an edge over the others. Cosmetic stuff. Think hats in TF2.
