Ah... Houses. The very starting point of anyone's Minecraft life.
They can be made of many different materials. I usually prefer to make my first house out of Wood Planks.
I know other people have other tastes in design than me so i'm curious to see what other people build their first house out of.

I dun't make a house. I tunnel into a nearby hill. Then for my first house I use stone bricks with logs, usually.

My avatar-Madison Gotha. She knows various weapons, she's a mage/sage, and is somewhat immortal. Madison has the capability of taming and communicating monsters, a genetic trait passed down by her father. 26 physically, 1400-something mentally, and a Lofty Peakian/Zenithian mix. Doesn't really like being called an elf and hates being called human..
I might be Moderator, but don't bother treating me too special. And don't make tons of Ban Hammer jokes, please. Also, I'm an Off-Topic only Mod. Don't ask me to lock a thread or something if it's not in the off-topic
Making a house out of one material looks terrible, I use a mix of several. I stay wherever until I have the material to make a home base. I've spent nights outside, in desert temples and caves before I built my first house in my survival world. I used oak wood planks for the house, some of that new wood from the savannah(forgot what it's called) for the floor and cobblestone as borders on each wall. I have a glass ceiling as well.
The house is only three small rooms so it actually isn't that resource heavy.

Let me know if my posts are helpful or if you like them. That's what I'm here for.
I am currently lurking more than I am posting. I haven't gone anywhere.
Wood planks, usually Oak, as I tend to spawn in Oak-heavy areas. (I see. And are you a boy or a girl?) I've tended to build underground lately, so I suppose that should count for something, as well. It's funny; the first time I really built a home underground, I was literally sleeping right next to an Iron Ore vein without realizing it.
Me? Depends on my mood. If I wanna hurry up and mine, I will dig out a hole in a mountain. If I wanna spend time on a house, I will make it out of wood and glass.
Whenever I create a new world, I find a mountainside and make stairs leading down to a 7x7x3 room with a door, with exactly 9 torches (four in each corner, two on the sides, one above the door, one above a door to another passageway I'll get to in a second, and one smack in the middle on the floor), 4 large chests, a bed right next to the torch in the middle (maybe I should think of a better place to put that), and a passageway with stairs leading down to a 2x2 mining shaft on layer 12 (or whatever that good layer right above the lava layer is), with a crafting table embedded in the left side of the wall right next to the passageway and a furnace embedded on the right.
If that didn't get an image engraved in your head, I have pictures too. http://imgur.com/a/zbZsY
From a different topic. I didn't want to retype it (even if not all of that is necessary), so quoted.
If I do end up building a house, it's usually out of wood.

Ohhhh those were the glory days
You might know everything I'm going to do, but that's not going to help you, since I know everything you're going to do! Strange, isn't it?
(acacia)
And because I do not have the patience to build a big house, that underground base becomes my temporary base. I can always expand easily if I need to.
