With the dozens and dozens of popular Minecraft Youtubers, do you think anyone starting a channel about Minecraft would have much hope doing this? Do you think any particular type or genre of Minecraft videos (eg. LPs, inventions, MC comedy) would attract more or less views than another?
There is a supreme oversaturation of Minecraft on Youtube. It doesn't really matter what you do in your series, odds of it getting popular are slim to none.

IMO it's probably pointless. There's a bunch of kids in my school who do Hunger Games videos and I think they were rejoicing over their 24th subscriber before Holiday break.
Me, I started a channel dedicated to video-gaming itself. Not the general squeakers with a camera pointed at their TV. But more-so talking about video games, and their essence, and also gameplay. I reccommend the same!
The famous Youtubers today started thinking only about having fun. The people who try to start now only think about subscribers. That is why most fail. Those people thinking only of view counts and ratings are bound to fail.
I think there's still room for people dropping the occasional Minecraft video on their channels. I don't think there's much room left for another Minecraft-dedicated channel or straight LP series. That said...

If you're doing it hoping to get rich and famous, you'd probably have a better chance at the lottery.
But if you're doing it for fun to add to your own in enjoyment of the game then I say go for it, that's why I'm doing it. To me it helps me feel like I'm not playing alone (when I usually am) and I've gotten to meet some cool people in the community. Is getting views, comments and adding subscribers fun and rewarding? Absolutely! But that can't be the driving force, do it because you enjoy it.
Damn straight! I'm in it for the fun. Sure having subscribers is nice, but just knowing you're connecting with at least 1 person makes YouTube worth while.
