I was wondering when i started playing minecraft (version-wise) but i don't remember i have my first world from the first day i played and i was wondering if there is any way to tell from that world and i can't figure out from my account because i used a friends account for quite a while before i got my own about a year ago.
I was thinking about making a suggestion: Minecraft should store the version of MC that created the world in the file so that when it shows up in the world list you know which one created it.
My first main world has this "level.dat_mcr" file, which is apparently level.dat in an old format for backup purposes when a pre-Anvil world is converted; not sure why it is generated if nothing has to be converted, and it hasn't been modified since I created the world on March 28 this year. Although, my current main world doesn't have one because I used Minecraft Land Generator to pre-generate it and the server doesn't create it (I know I created it on December 4th though since that is the date of the files for the mod used to generate it).
Note that in my case I only started playing (official release) in 1.5.1, thus level.dat_mcr has the same date as when the world was created; if you started playing before 1.2.1 (released March 1, 2012), then it will be dated when it was converted.
Dig around in the saved file's regions folder. Sort it by modified date and see what the oldest file was. That's probably around the time you started playing.
You might be able to guess the generator that made it.
The old generator before the Adventure update 1.8 beta looks a hole lot different (no sandy beaches from 1.8 beta onetc).
1.8 had strongholds but no end room, the end rooms were in like 1.9 beta I think.
If no Jungles is was made before those came out.
If no structures (IE. jungle Temple, desert temple) was made before those came out.
Water in the deserts?
Is there really no way to definitively identify a world's current version?
I have a survival world that I haven't played in a long time. Since then I've updated Minecraft to play snapshots and test things in other worlds. In addition the world files have been moved around and possibly MCEdited so I don't really trust modified dates and whatnot.
I don't want to log into this world and have it auto convert to the latest version. I just want to know what version it is so I can use the new launcher to run that version of Minecraft and check it out before converting it to the latest, especially because I know it's pre-1.6.4 and I don't want to lose structures, etc.
The game has to know somehow what version a world is, so that it knows what conversions to make on the world file...

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
