You see, before I got my own server, I used to apply to all these different types of servers, but one thing that always intrigued me was why most of them put "Mindcrack-Like" in their titles. So I did a little research, and I learned of what Mindcrack was made up of, and it seemed cool. However, I do not see how it was so amazing that over half the servers I applied on said they wanted to be like Mindcrack.Mindcrack didn't create a new way of playing the game. To my somewhat limited knowledge, there had always been SMP servers with good communities who had fun messing around or playing games. I am just assuming that Mindcrack had been the first one to make playing on an SMP well known and popular through the use of Youtube. But still, that does not give a reason for server owners to keep spamming their titles with Mindcrack-Like, or Mindcrack-Based.In my opinion, when a server does say it is Mindcrack based, etc. it gives me the impression that the people who apply to those servers (I'm talking about vanilla whitelisted servers, sorry if I misleaded you) just want to be like the players who are on the Mindcrack server. They don't actually want to play Minecraft for Minecraft, they just want to play so they can try to be the "Etho" of the server, or the "Bdubs" of the server. It sort of annoys me whenever I read those titles, not in a very angry sense, just a tinge of frustration here and there. For example, this may be a little off topic, when I read those "Youtubers Only" Servers. I feel like the server owners just want their servers to be on Youtube, or be popular. I feel that those server owners who force the players on their servers to do videos once a week, or once every two weeks, etc. are just ruining the enjoyment of Minecraft. Back to the topic, it seems that I cannot look at the survival servers page without seeing at least one "Mindcrack-Like" server. But this is just my opinion. Feel free to post yours as a response.Sorry if I was unclear about anything. I will be glad to clarify anything that did not make sense. This was not a rant against the Mindcrack server. I respect them for the community they have created; but I do not idolize them to the point where I would shape a server to mimic them. Once again I apologize if this was too long to read, but I know there are many educated people who read the discussions page who will read through this and post their opinions. Thanks for reading.
Personally, I hold them on the same level as pvp/faciton servers as stuff that's overdone as all hell, and I wish would stop being so popular (idc if you like pvp but honestly its HORRIBLE in minecraft and I frankly think combat should stay the way it is, limited)
OT: I despise the obscene popularity of Mindcrack-Like servers, and wish the series never spawned such a thing, it's fine if you like to be in a community, but when it's done for popularity it's for the wrong reason.
As long as it influences good behavior and a nice community within the server i'm fine with it. Nothing is worse than joining a server that just griefs and steals your items constantly. Unpleasant experiences.

I like them because most of them don't use bukkit, which spams my chat with messages 24/7. Also, most of them don't really have any restrictions on what you can do, and you can trust mostly anyone on the server with a whitelist and a good server OP.
I do think they make great communities. However, if the server only allows "youtubers," then it shouldn't really be acknowledged.
I think that labeling something ¨Mindcrack-like¨ makes you come off as trying to sell a knock-off product. The Mindcrack server didn't make a new concept, the only thing that makes it stand out is the player base, which is impossible to emulate by tacking on ¨Mindcrack Like!¨ to any server.

I like the idea of small communitty servers, but despise the people who do it to get youtube popularity. that is just flat wrong. I dont like the fact that some of those applications say 'which Mindcracker are you most like?' meaning 'who could you possibly take the roll of on our very Mindcrack like server' which is stupid, however, I do think that it is ok for someone to say that they want a mindcrack like server. if they like Mindcrack then they can do whatever THEY want to do! So if you dont like that they are saying that they want a 'Mindcrack like server' then that is your issue. I personally think that they shouldnt do it the amount that everyone does it, it covers the minecraft forums and you cant find any other servers exept those that say 'mindcrack like'. So you see, there are two sides of the story
Mindcrack is a seerver with about 25 different youtubers all in a survival server. The community that Guude, the leader, has created, with not only youtubers like Etho, Paulsoaresjr, Vechs, etc, but with its fans. That's why people say "Mindcrack-like" 'cause that's pretty much the best type of server anyone could be in. It's everyone's dream server.

Although my MCForum is SoarvivalistGizor, I usually go by SlabGizor117 or Slab. I made this account back when I was a fan more of Paulsoaresjr, rather then Etho.
I think that Mindcrack is the way SMP is meant to be played, without any fear of griefing. But that's not why it is popular. I agree with the majority of the points the OP brought up, that people make their servers Mindcrack-like just to get popular.
I also don't like it when these servers say you have to have a YouTube account to join, because that screws over a lot of people who wouldn't want to make an account just to play on a server.
Calling your server "Minecrack-like" always makes me think of Burger King changing their name to "McDonaldsish". It also implies (to me) that the owner of the server lacks the maturity I am looking for in a server owner. This implication is why I don't mind it when people advertise their "Mindcrack-like" server, I know I'm not interested right off the bat.

I do not really think that is true. There are many types of servers out there, but I am extremely sure that Mindcrack is not everyone's dream server. It might the server many people would like to join, but definitely not everyone. I mean no offense by saying this.
In my opinion, there are only a select few who actually want to emulate Mindcrack because it is their favorite server, or the one that they idolize. I think people title their threads as Mindcrack like because they want the popularity that it brings. (As I have stated before) More people would want to apply to a server that has something well known in their title then just a regular thread.
But putting Mindcrack in a thread title reminds people of a great server, and then they want to join the server that put Mindcrack-Like in their title because of those feelings. I know I am overthinking it, but it seems very psychological.
But try this. Go into the survival servers sections of the forums. And look at all the different servers that are there. Tell me how many of them have "Mindcrack" in their title. And then look at other pages. Then tell me if that gets annoying in any way.
I love vanilla servers, but they are much more vulnerable to greifing, and there are SO many bad vanilla servers out there, it's hard to find a good one.
I'm sorry if I was unclear about this, but I'm not asking what your opinion is on servers that try to be like Mindcrack, as in no griefing or stealing, but I am talking about servers that dub themselves as "Mindcrack Like". As in having that inside the title. Sorry to those who misunderstood. I will change the title.
It's the stereotypical monkey-see-monkey-do of marketing. By dubbing themselves mindcracker-like they are just trying to capitalize on someone else success. What's sort of sad about the whole thing is that copycats rarely, if ever, achieve any notoriety. It's instead the act of being yourself that generally leads to success.
Meanwhile, Mindcrack was/is a success story because of the owner inventiveness and the people that play it. I don't agree with you they didn't do something so amazing others wouldn't want to copy. They did something special alright and people will want to copy that sort of stuff.
Mindcrack chief reason of success was the players that composed it. Many were so-called youtube personalities that shaped themselves either through Mindcrack, or before that. Here you have a game server that hosts a group of well known players with semi-respected status among the player community, many of which incredibly talented.
Mindcrack owner understood early on that the success of his youtube channel depended entirely on the community his server would host. By making it a private whitelisted server, Guude was able to take some manner of control over how viewers should perceive and react to his youtube channel, by being selective of who should play it. Much like a public relations figure, Guude was able to enforce the youtube channel image he desired, despite his server being composed of people he couldn't technically control.
Mindcrack captained the idea of hosting specially formatted gaming sessions. While others were starting their own servers to just play the game, Mindcrack was hosting Speed Builds, and other inventive game formats. This probably came naturally, given the talent of Guude's players, and was not the product of a calculated strategy. But it needs to be noted.
All in all Mindcrack is a server many youtube viewers would want to be a part of. In creating their own servers, some (or many) wanted to emulate that environment and be like a Mindcrack server, much like popular singers fans dress, behave and want to be like their idols.
I'm avoiding stating my own opinion on this cult of personality (because it isn't nice). But the reason you see many Mindcrack-like servers, which obviously are nothing like Mindcrack, is because the owners genuinely wanted to give themselves and their players the same type of creative, fun, and public figure status Mindcrack achieved. That many owners and players alike actually fail to understand there's only one Mindcrack, like there's only one Yogscast, one Rhianna, one Denzel Washington, is unfortunately of no consequence to the minds of anyone not creative enough to build their own success story.

Server who say they are mindcrack like do it to make themselves feel good. They think if they say it enough times it might come true, and if it is people would look up to them. Most of the owners of those server are people who want to appear better of than others.
