The only one I didn't know was the emerald location (I knew about it being only in extreme hills but not the levels of a cave)
and personally, I don't like using the F3 key. It's a leftover debug tool, and am not sure why mojang decided to leave it in. In my opinion, Dinnerbone should disable the f3 screen and move the coordinates to maps.
Coal can certainly appear above-ground -- anywhere there's stone. It's quite commonly seen in Extreme Hills, but also in the side of any hill with stone showing. Iron can appear up to level 63 -- I was just exploring some of the new Extreme Hills, and seeing it not only on lake bottoms, but once right on the ground (a stone field at sea level).
The suggested levels for mining are kinda wonky too -- in particular, for the diamond/redstone range, the best level is actually 11, because the lava lakes will be flush with the floor, you can quench or avoid them as you like, and if you do fall in, you at least have a chance of jumping out. At 12, if you mine into a lava lake with space above it (including mining a couple of blocks down), the lava will be a block below floor level -- if you fall in, just forget about jumping out! Below that, level 6 or 7 will let you dig a tunnel grid below the one at level 11, just watch out for lava from all directions. (Keep not just water , but blocks handy -- water won't help much with lava coming from above, you'll need to block it off.)
I generally start with a vertical shaft to bedrock, digging out platforms (also placing breakfalls and torches) every 5 levels down to level 30 or 32 (that is, top of gold/lapis range), then every 3 or 4 levels below that. I often have to adjust those to account for caves that I discover on the way, but in any case I dig out grids of tunnels from the shaft platforms.

I did some CraftTweaker scripts for Mystical Agriculture. They fill in a couple of small gaps in MA, and also let you make or duplicate not only vanilla plants, but the blocks, plants and wood from Quark and Biomes O'Plenty. Also spawn eggs for most vanilla mobs! The scripts are here on Github.

To Look At Your Coordinates Hit F3 On Your Keyboard, To Check Your Layer It Is Y.
Be A
No problem, F3 is mostly used for basically checking your cords and your framerate.
And sooooo much more. It starts getting more and more useful when you get into the technical side of minecraft.
I'll for sure use this in the future.
Thanks for sharing epiclink150294. It is appreciated.
