Ya know, I think as Minecraft goes by threw its days, I think it's becoming less clear which is more valuable or strong. Gold or iron? Some may say that an iron sword is better than a golden sword. Some may say golden armor is better than iron armor? What is up with this???
I, for one, think that iron is much better than gold. My reasons:
GOLD IS SOFT!!!
GOLD IS WEAK!!!
INCASE IF YOU HAVEN'T NOTICED, GOLD DOES 4 POINTS OF DAMAGE AND IRON SWRODS DO 6!!!
THINK OF HOW MANY THINGS YOU CAN MAKE WITH GOLD, AND THEN THINK OF HOW MANY THINGS YOU CAN MAKE WITH IRON. WHICH LIST IS BETTER?
GOLD RUNS OUT FASTER (I BELEIVE WITH ARMOR AS WELL)
AND MOST OF ALL, IRON RULES BECAUSE IT IS SO EASY TO FIND!!!
I hope that this cleared things up, but if anyone even wants to TRY to defend the gold side of this discussion, I totally support it! Keep playing, folks!!!
Iron is obviously superior when talking just about tools and armor. There is no denying that because even the higher enchantability of Gold doesn't matter that much on an enchanting system that is totally random. Plus the low durability means no matter how strong an item is it will break pretty fast.
When it comes to things besides tools and armor, they are even because both have their own unique uses that are impossible to compare.

Gold tools are able to Mine/Cut/Dig the fastest out of all the tools (though once you start adding enchantments like Efficiency, this becomes pointless, because then other tools can work at the same speed)
Main issue with gold is it's durability, makes it worthless to use no matter what the case is.
The only part gold has a real upperhand in, is it's use in Potions.
I'm noticing that in many other disscussions and Hunger Games maps and economy servers, many people seem to put gold before iron. More expensive, more useful, and more valuable, therefore kinda throwing off the fact that iron is superior over iron.
Depends entirely on the server, or the person who's trying to buy it from you.
Logically, Gold is more valuable, because it's rarer than Iron. But Iron is a lot more useful, and gets used up more by players.
In pure Vanilla minecraft, Gold is 'worth' more, but only in an intrinsic way (much like gold in real life)
When on servers, it depends entirely on how the server is set up, and what use the players actually give it.
Gold tools are able to Mine/Cut/Dig the fastest out of all the tools
Yeah, but what can you use 'em on? A golden pickaxe can't even be used to mine its own ore (or any ore. Only things you can mine with a golden pick are those you could mine with a wooden one.) Plus the durability thing, which you already mentioned.
Gold has a higher enchantability than any other material. So, if you're trying to get Fortune or Silk Touch, and you really have to get it on the first try for whatever reason, then you'll have better luck with gold than with anything else. I don't see how this would ever come into play, though, unless maybe you're opposed to XP grinders or something like that.
Gold is for god apples, that is why gold is more valuable than iron,
I do also believe it got a higher value in a beacon pyramid than iron.
In my opinion they both as armor/weapon/tools are irrelevant because there is diamond weapon/armor/tools that beats both a hundred times over in both durability and damage (not speed gold is better there).
So it is clear gold is more valuable than iron.
(gold armor sucks)
They don't get a higher beacon value and iron is needed to MINE diamond thus making iron more valuable.
well, both iron and gold have their strengths. Iron is more useful for tools, weapons, utility, things like that. Gold is useful for the more hi-tech stuff, such as clocks, powered rails, and golden apples. so I can't say which one I like better. (no, I am not a sky fan. I am a proud member of the squid army.)
Gold is more decorative but comes in handy when you want to mine/dig/chop something quickly. Gold has a crap load of crafting recipes and uses. Just like gold, iron has tons on uses. It is more durable. I can't really decide, and I'm not American.
Then again, England did play a massive part in the making of America as we know it.
yeah, by scaring the pilgrims with England's unfair (and kinda evil) king, making them run away to America, where they set up an English colony, which made the king use taxation without representation, thus making the colonists revolt, winning the land, and forming the great USA. but that was all a couple hundred years ago, so I hold it above NO ONE'S head. England is actually pretty cool.
On topic!
my favorite ore is gold, because it SPARKLES! but iron is my favorite for tools.
On tools, iron wins. No contest. Despite the higher enchantability of gold and the faster speed, the durability is way too low on those.
Thus, let's check out what else they can make:
For gold,
-Golden apples. The regular ones are hardly needed due to how quickly you regenerate health, and the block ones aren't needed for anything but PvP.
-Powered rails. Necessary for a decent railway nowadays, so pretty good.
-Clocks. More useful than compasses IMO, anyway, but not terribly useful anyhow.
-Glistering melons. Useful for health potions, which are not useful due to how quickly you regenerate health. They're only handy for PvP.
For iron,
-Buckets. Can be used to get a nether portal early and is used for transporting water and lava, which are both very useful.
-Rails. Useful for railways if you don't want to use a lot of gold.
-Shears. If you ever want a bed, you need them (and those are pretty useful) and can get you some nice looking building blocks.
-Compasses. Might be worthwhile if F3 wasn't free and more effective.
-Minecarts. Required for a railway, which are useful for transporting goods (or you until you get a horse).
-Iron bars. Nice for aesthetic purposes I suppose, since creepers rarely end up blasting your house and the extra blast resistance these give probably won't come in to play.
-Cauldrons. A pool of water is better and I doubt you'll actually need to un-dye leather armor at some point in a game.
-Anvils. Useful for enchanted items, which are pretty much overkill anyway so their usefulness is debatable.
-Pistons and sticky pistons. Excellent for creative purposes and for hiding a base.
-Hoppers. I've never bothered with them to be honest, but given their automation purposes they're pretty darn useful.
So, yeah, not only can you make more things from iron, but more of them are useful. Iron wins. (Although IMO the golden weighted plates are more useful than their iron counterparts.
Iron is way better, but gold is still useful. Iron has way better durability and more armor points, and is less rare. But gold is good for hardcore mode and potions. Overall, iron is the best.
I always use iron armor when I go to the End. Buckets, starter tools, iron doors, compasses, minecarts, rails, cauldrons, golems, anvils, and shears are all the iron things I use. For gold its golden apples, golden horse armor, golden carrots, glistering melon and clocks, so I have to say iron wins.
I use gold as a "Backup" armor. It has decent durability, and protects quite a bit. Bit I do have to admit, iron is better.
Gold shines in the brewing and material department. With gold you can make standard healing potions, and gold carrots, gold apples, basically a bunch of stuff that'll help you survive.
Iron shines in the tools and armor department. Iron's the second best out of all the tools, lasts quite some time, mines things quite fast, and is very easy to find.
In short. Gold is good, and iron is good.

I MINE A LONELY CAVE, THE ONLY CAVE THAT I HAVE EVER KNOWN!
I think that they're perfectly balanced, Especially if you enjoy playing on a PvP-based server.
Golden Apples (both material and block forms) come in quite handy if you aren't expecting someone, and Healing potions are invaluable in Bow Fights.
Oh, not to mention Golden carrots are needed for invisibility potions, another great thing if you don't want to fight someone.
That being said, Iron is used for, like.. everything. Rails, Minecarts, buckets, Shears.. the list goes on. Not to mention you need an iron pick to get up to the next tier of tools, and Irons' durability is next to the best you can get.
Iron + Carrot does not make the third-best food in the game. Having a stockpile of gold picks is nice when you want to mine stone, then using the iron for ores. Iron, however, makes better combat utilities. Kinda a tie.
I think iron is the best material in minecraft, because it's easy to find it and it's strong enough, and gold is the worst because you cant find it really easy and it's just really REALLY bad.
if i had the choice for infinite iron or infinite diamonds, i would choose the iron because you can make more things with it
you can compare gold to wooden tools and wood is still better (same attack damage etc., but easier to make)
I would choose infinite diamonds and use my diamond tools to mine iron for the stuff I need.

They don't get a higher beacon value and iron is needed to MINE diamond thus making iron more valuable.
how are you sure we're all American?
People see me and think I'm weak. But I can take care of myself, by myself.

Why do you ask?
I would choose infinite diamonds and use my diamond tools to mine iron for the stuff I need.
