I decided to go into the Nether today and it appears to have regenerated itself. Spawned me in a new area completely by surprise, and when I try to go back through it even created a new portal in the world, even if it's right by an existing one I had already built. I'm pretty sure I was in the Nether after the 1.5 update and it was fine then. As of 1.6, I have no idea what's going on or how to fix it and get my old Nether back. I did a ton of legit survival work in there, found an awesomely huge fortress and it would be a shame to lose all of that forever. And I did back it all up before I upgraded it to 1.6, but the hard drive I backed it up to recently died so I no longer have that if I do need it...
I would appreciate any help/info on getting it back. Also note - this is my server world.
None at the moment. I don't install Bukkit until it's updated to at least a beta build. I only have some client-side mods going like Modloader, Rei's Mini Map and Optifine.
the only other thing i could think of is that you accidentally deleted the nether world file or it became corrupted and a new one was generated to replace it.

Well I certainly didn't delete it. There are still plenty of files in the folder for the nether that go back as far as early last year when I first went to it.

Lately some of my portals have been moving around too since 1.6, I think it might be a new bug. Have a really careful look around your world, everything might still be there. Do you remember the coordinates for your builds?

No I do not. But thinking more about it, I know the original portals in the Nether will spawn around 8, 8...And that's around where this new portal put me. So I now know for sure that it's a newly regenerated Nether for some reason. But now that makes the newly spawning portals make sense - because the new portals aren't spawning in exactly in the coordinates where the old ones did, and since they can't find one within a close enough area with the related coordinates in the regular world, it's making an all new one.

Before you updated to 1.6 though, did you have any plugins installed? I'm pretty sure that the Nether is stored differently for Bukkit and Vanilla (AKA, going from 1.5 with Bukkit to 1.6 vanilla would make it seem like the Nether reset itself). If you had bukkit installed for 1.5, I'm pretty sure your Nether should be back to the way it was once you make your 1.6 server run bukkit again. I don't have much experience with plugins however, so I'm not entirely sure.
So I figured it out. It must have been the difference in how Bukkit and the Vanilla server loads different areas? At any rate, my Nether was stored in my world_nether folder. However, it was looking for a DIM-1 folder in the base world folder. I noticed the only files in the DIM-1 folder for the Nether were just created today. So I backed those up just in case, copied the DIM-1 folder from the "world_nether" folder over the one in the base "world" folder and bam...I got my original Nether back.

Thanks.

No. The only thing I've ever done is copied files to back things up. Nothing was ever cut or deleted.
