I've been wondering who uses 3rd person for a while since it seems like a taboo thing to me. I've searched for threads asking this but can't find any. Anyways, I love using it because of the great survival advantage. I think I've avoided many creeper-related tragedies, and it is also helpful for pvpers trying to sneak up behind me. It's also quite funny turning around right when someone walks up behind you just to scare them. I use it more than not but only in open spaces. The nether, outside, and usually in houses, unless they're small ones. So, tell me, why or why not do you use 3rd person?
I find it extremely useful when running away from someone. Instead of wasting time and hunger just running for as long as possible hoping they are already away I regularil look behind myself and in front of me constantly to get a sense of who or what is around me. The F5 feature has definitely saved my life on several occasions. The only complaint I have with it is it's unmappable key, but F5 for me is an okay spot, as my middle finger is held on the W while my index can stretch to the key.
I do, but I mostly don't. I like 1st person better personally but when i'm running through the field in the dark, it's best to get into 3rd party and check if anythings behind me
I agree that the button is kind of awkward but then again I play on Xbox most of the time - I have problems with every part of the PC layout... I don't even know how to craft an axe. However, I could tell you what page, spot & how far down an eye of ender, compass, piston, etc. is on in our crafting grid.
Karl, any reasons? I understand that a lot of people hate it, just because.
And I'm kind of a noob at this, what happens if you hijack your own thread? lol.
Not only i find it extremely useful while traveling or to look behind me while chased,it proved (to me) to be crucial under certain circumstances.
I'm always in third person while riding a horse or while i'm spleefing,it makes things A LOT easier.

I normally use it in pvp or minigames like spleef and deathrun. Things where you need to see surroundings. Its also handy to make people think you aren't watching them >:3
I very rarely do, but like some others it usually to look at my skin. x3 But using it to check if someone is still chasing you is a good idea to! I might have to try it next time i'm being chased. xD

i find third person view really only usable outside. because a lot of time when youre inside, the camera clips on corners, etc and is all screwy. compare this to 3rd person view for oblivion or skyrim, where entering 3rd person overrides drawing of the ceiling, letting you see, and it doesnt clip on corners and things.

You might know everything I'm going to do, but that's not going to help you, since I know everything you're going to do! Strange, isn't it?
I just wish that we could make the camera face where we want in third person and walk like normally.
