Or you could just run the .jar if you know you're gonna play offline.
EDIT: I now have the new launcher, but 1.6.1 won't let me run the .jar by double-clicking. I have to go through the launcher no matter what. This isn't so bad, though; what irks me is they haven't implemented auto-closing the launcher when it starts the game yet. At least I get to play the game!
No, I have a computer that is not connected to any network and has Minecraft on it (manually installed). There is no offline mode that I can tell. It says your password is wrong no matter what. I have two accounts and it won't accept either one (not that it should matter in offline mode as there is no way to authenticate anyways). I can launch 1.6 in offline mode just fine with Magic Launcher though, so you can use that as a workaround.

If you have it downloaded through the launcher, and you play when it cannot connect to the internet, it automatically goes to offline mode.
In order to play offline you have to have had at least one online login, and after that either you have mistyped your username/password and/or have no online connection will you be able to play offline

I am currently having the problem, as I play on my laptop on the road and tether to my phone for updates once in while, I can no longer play in offline mode quite a problem if I'm somewhere iI dont have a data connection on my cell phone.
This has to be a bug, I can't see Minecraft suddenly being an "always on" DRM style thing... For now, you can try figuring out how to launch the game without the launcher. I messed around for like the past hour before I got it to work. If they really are trying to go full DRM, well, it would be wrong for me to post complete instructions. But here's what I did:
1. Connect to the internet and run the launcher using the command line, and log in and play like normal 2. Look in the terminal for the lines that say "Launching in..." and "Running" -- you should find the command line you need to launch the game (it's huge) 3. The -Djava.library.path= part is set to some folder with a random number on it or something; change that to point to .minecraft/bin/natives where the .so files are
Best of luck to all the paying customers

Feel free to post about your Minecraft Let's Plays here
Does anyone know how much data the game downloads from the internet during single player gameplay? The only reason I would like an offline mode is if I am very low on monthly quota and don't want to needlessly eat it up while playing a single player game. The option should be there in the launcher for everyone, you shouldn't have to jump through hoops like temporarily disconnecting from the internet to make it available.
Good news-- Dinnerbone will have this issue fixed in the next update to the launcher (1.1.2), so at least not all hope is lost
Launcher 1.2.1 for Mac OSX does not have offline mode.
For those wondering why this is important, I (used to) play multiplayer in offline mode with my 7-year-old daughter. The old launcher made this easy, and we could play in a controlled environment without worrying about her going online.
Unfortunately, during the update to 1.6.x, I overwrote my copy of the 1.5.x server, so we can no longer play local multiplayer at all. (1.5.x server/client do not talk to 1.6.x server/client)
Given that this issue was reported as far back as April, I'm not optimistic Mojang is going to fix this problem. If they don't, they've lost two players.
No, I'm not going to pay for another copy just to play local multiplayer. I'm opposed to companies taking away features I value that were part of the product when I purchased (this is somewhat similar to Sony removing Linux support from the PS3), and those companies will never receive more money from me.

If you're having an issue, please check in with the Minecraft Issue Tracker. Search for the same or similar issue that you are having, if it exists, so as to not create duplicate issues. If it does not exist, create a new report. Remember to be specific and include all information that is asked.

Thanks for your response. Perhaps I did not provide enough clarity.
I know that the offline mode issue exists from reviewing complaints in the issue tracker. I also know this issue has existed since April from the same postings. My speculation that Mojang is not interested in fixing this is related to the number of issues (often duplicated) that users have filed to date with no explanation or fix since then. Offline mode doesn't represent a significant amount of logic, so not fixing it in several months appears to send a strong message that it's not coming back. I could easily be wrong, but there have been two point releases of Minecraft, and several launcher updates with no sign of offline mode.
I understand if offline mode was not important or interesting to others. However, for me, online mode was not important or interesting. Some may not see a distinction between online and offline, but being able to play on a LAN is important, to me at least.
I don't want my 7-year-old exposed to online play and the kind of conversations crass/nasty players often interject, but she needs help with her construction efforts so LAN play was very useful to us.
