"Cast your vote for the leaders, artists, innovators, icons and heroes that you think are the most influential people in the world. Official voting ends on Friday, April 12th. The final TIME 100 list is selected by our editors and will be revealed on Thursday, April 18th."
I guess Notch is an icon... but he's no leader, no artist, no innovator, and no hero. Notch has not pushed the boundaries of computer science, society, or anything else of the sort with Minecraft. All he's done is make a lot of money for himself and his employees.
The fact that anyone would vote (and indeed has voted, in droves) for Notch as one of "the most influential people in the world" reveals what a hollow and pointless e-popularity contest the entire endeavor is. Notch is a Swedish beardo who got halfway into work on a rip-off of an unfinished game, which he proceeded to dump off on other people when he realized he needed more programming skill than he possesses to make his unpleasable fans happy (and fix his broke-ass game) and had been showered with enough money to never do another day's work again in his life.
A vote for Notch is basically a vote for Lowtax or Aaron Swartz (too bad he's dead), since Minecraft would never have gotten anywhere without early support from the goons and reddophiles. If you're going to vote in the TIME poll, for God's sake, vote for someone like Paul Farmer, Nate Silver, Kit Parker, or anyone on this planet who has ever done an iota of good for anyone else. Just... not Notch.
Postscript ~~ Most of this list is actually pretty awful. Seriously, Paula Deen? x_x
He's not influential at all. That's why he convinced you, me, and 10,000,000 others to buy his Indie game. I'd say that's a pretty big influence. He didn't cure cancer or anything, but a accomplishment is an accomplishment. And from looking at that list, he did a lot more than most of those people.

Notch didn't just create minecraft the game itself, He basically created WHOLE communities, without notch there would be no minecraft meaning there would be no minecraft forums, He didnt just get 10million people to buy his game, he got 10million people to come together as a community.
He is not influential, but in a way, he has made a phenomenal step into the gaming world. He is not influential, but he has made a great accomplishment, he has made millions of people feel happy.
Although Minecraft is not the first sandbox game to be created, it is certainly the most popular and largest sandbox game. Minecraft has sparked hundreds of websites, thousands of servers and clans for people to congregate together, millions of Youtube videos, billions of forum discussion. It is one of the most sensational computer game in gaming history. It allows people to be fascinated, inspired, awed and amazed.
Overall, Notch is NOT an influential icon, but the game he created, Minecraft is one.
I agree 100%. Minecraft is an amazing game, but that doesn't mean Notch deserves to be titled as "one of the most influential people". He made the right game at the right time. The community is what took Minecraft and made it into the super popular game it is today.
I'm surprised most of you care about the poll in the first place.

Yeah, producing a product people can buy isn't influencing people... He didn't convince us to buy it, the game convinced us. I had been playing Minecraft for a few months before I even knew who Notch was. My friends told me to check the game out so really it was their influence.
Your friends would have never influenced you to get it if he never finished it, so indirectly, he did influence you. Also, I think he's had more of a influence than Paula Deen ever did or will. I know he won't beat Melinda Gates for #1 or anything like that, but he should at least be on the list somewhere.
Notch is just another indie game creator. Nothing else.
Actually, Notch is the creator of one of the biggest indie games ever made. Not "just another indie game creator".
I don't think hes one of the most influential, though the entire list is so messed up anyways that I don't even care.
According to this, Jackie Chan is more influential than Michael Phelps. And for God's sake Paula Deen is on this list.

Like it or not, OP, Minecraft has changed the game industry. It proved that a dinky indie title could take the gaming world by storm, giving the EA's and such a run for their money despite the absurd difference in capital each wields.
Most influential man of the year, or any year? Maybe not, but it doesn't mean he's a nobody. At least to me, video games are a truly important part of culture, potentially every bit as respected as books and movies. There's no reason why he shouldn't be in the running.
Every company started out as a few people in a room. The only difference is Mojang managed to get to fame with only one game in a matter of a couple years by word of mouth.
All it proves is he managed to make a fun game. He's not inspirational, and there are plenty of people way more deserving of it. He didn't even change gaming, or how games are made. All he changed was making the amount of ***** block-type games skyrocket.

Don't know why you care though, Time Magazine has not been relevant for several decades now...

Unless you just want to keep celebrating coorporations...
Not only that, it is a game both my son and I can enjoy together.

It shows just how useless these polls are.
