I hate diamond shovels. For one they plow through the durability so quick since you dig dirt, gravel, etc so fast. I find it quite useless to use Diamond Shovels, and instead use Iron instead. But it DOES only take on Diamond to build it.... So what do you guys think? Do you use diamond shovels?
I don't find myself in need of a shovel very often, and an iron shovel is just about as fast as a diamond one if not just as fast. Plus I always have more iron than diamonds so I stick with iron shovels.

This isnt how they work though. They still mine 1562 blocks. Just faster. You would still need the 7 iron shovels for the same amount of blocks. Its not like because you are mining faster you are using more durability.
Throw an unbreaking III on that shovel and it lasts quite a while.
A diamond shovel isnt necessarily the first tool you want to make but why not make them later on.

Add an efficiancy IV to that Unbreaking III and you can move entire deserts from one location to another. Not that this is often needed, but I am actually 4/5 of the way through doing this atm. If it weren't for Diamond shovels, I don't know if i'd ever finish that project. Even when it comes to smaller scale landscaping, I still find a diamond shovel useful for this purpose because as mentioned in the post above mine, they last so much longer.
But when it comes to every day mining I mostly use Iron and occasionaly i'll just use stone.
You know, i barely ever use a shovel myself, but of course when im mining and run into gravel....i always wish i would have made a shovel...XD but i never do..but when i actually do make a shove, i use iron shovels, If i would ever make a diamond shovel, it would mean i would have like 4stacks of extra diamonds
At the cost of only 1 diamond, they're pretty darn useful. Especially on Multi-Player Servers with MCMMO (or any other skill plugin) Diamond Shovel enchanted with efficiency + unbreaking means some fast excavation power-lvling.

Good luck getting these;
Sure, why not? If i have enough to spare, and i know my next project will require digging. It's just one diamond.
I never use diamonds for armor though. Seems like a waste to me
I understand that enchanting is random and my evidence here is anecdotal at best, but i've gotten several of these. And i use them as I have described. The trick I think is to enchant ahead of time. So when i'm doing other projects and I've already got decent weapons and a fortune III pickaxe I can use my xp on a shovel. Sure I've gotten a few silk touch shovels I don't even know what to do with but i've also gotten quite a few eff III+ and unbreak III+ shovels in this manner that I stock pile for when i'm working on my massive desert moving project.
Perhaps I should get a photobucket account and show you guys the vast amount of sand i've moved.
its just 1 diamond to craft it, so the firsts minecraft days I prefer iron ones, but when IM playing my world for a week and im doing it normaly, i use diamond shovel with SlilkTouch, Unbreaking III, and Eficiency V, (Obviusly, if its going all good and ive found some zombie or skelleton spawn

...But that's just my opinion.
