I honestly have to disagree. I challenge you to find an area that generates totally flat for over 100x100 blocks.
I'm not saying terrain generation couldn't use some updates/fixing/additions, but honestly, a lot of the world IRL is flatter than Minecraft.
I can understand your position, and I won't say I disagree. It's disappointing, though, that it gets brought up in every thread on the forums and tends to derail real conversation.
I can guarantee that Mojang understands that many players want what you want, and I would wager that they have some vague plan for an unknown time in the future where they *will* attempt to make your sub-section of the community happier.
But please, I'm begging, this topic is not the place for discussion about the terrain.
upvote upvote upvote upvote!
It took three pages for anyone to catch it! Or at least to mention having caught it. I wish I could double-upvote your post.
I didn't, I refrenced the terrain only once in my original post, but like a normal person I had to support my argument, also its not a case were how long the terrain is flat or how far you can find a mountain but how restricted it is, and terrain is extremely restricted.
But yes let's not mention terrain, or else fanboys and supporters begin flame wars, lets keep this thread the only clean thread about minecraft and mojang, please.
No I wouldn't, because I don't think Jeb has ruined or is ruining Minecraft. What I would tell him is that he's not doing enough to make the things he's promised us a reality, and that when he or the other Minecraft developers have ideas they need to stick to them instead of, for example, pumping out an update all about varying strengths of redstone signals instead. Where's our lighting engine revamp? Where's our mod API? Where's the ability to change usernames, maybe for a fee? For that matter, where's our Sky Dimension that Notch himself confirmed would be coming? We don't have those, instead we have bats and witches. Why? 'Cause those are easier to program.
I get what you're saying, really I do, and I respect you for saying it! But while Mojang might be made up of real people, they're not just real people. They took up a responsibility to this community, not one you'll find in any legal contract, but the responsibility to keep the flame burning and deliver what they say they will. And when they fall short of that responsibility, I don't want to hear "They're just people, reality happens, cut them some slack". I don't want to hear "Have some improved death messages instead!" I want to hear "We're sorry, we let you down, but we're working on it now and it'll be in the next update" and I want them to mean it!
I'll take your "20% cooler" and raise you a "Losing a friend's trust is the fastest way to lose a friend forever", and I don't trust Mojang anymore! As far as I'm concerned they've lied and lied and lied some more, always with good or at least lukewarm intentions but I don't plan on just letting it slide! They have a long way to go if they want to convince me that they're working hard for our benefit after all the promises and confirmations they've broken like they meant nothing. As a consumer, that kind of thing makes me angry. As a person, it hurts me. I feel betrayed and suckered, not to the degree those words imply like if my best friend stole all my money and skipped town, but betrayed and suckered still!
Mojang needs to learn some honesty and accountability. Being real live people excuses mistakes, but it doesn't excuse a total lack of effort to make up for them.

This.
This is... EXACTLY the type of attitude that makes me want to go on a murderous rampage:
I want to hear "We're sorry, we let you down, but we're working on it now and it'll be in the next update"
Screw your thinking pattern. I say this as somebody who has a small simple game that apparently some people play. And there are people with this exact mentality. I have a name for them. I call them entitled Douchebags. They have no idea how Software Development works. All they know how to do is the three C's. Consume, Claim, and Complain. They consume the content, they Claim things that should be or will be added, and they Complain when it doesn't live up to their expectations.
They are sort of like Food Critics. Completely useless to Humanity as a whole but they somehow found a small niche to survive in modern society. Joke will be on him when then governments are overthrown by giant cockroaches and the only way he can get away from the acid-shooting cockroach soldiers would be if that restaurant he gave a one-star review let's him inside. Come to think of it, that's not really a good analogy at all, since Food critic's make their living being douchebags, whereas most Minecraft players... well, let's face it, they haven't even reached the age of majority... but those that have, are doing other things. Well, I certainly hope they are.
My point is, it's not contributory, it's demanding. As if we deserve an explanation when a schedule slips. We don't. I'm not even talking about Minecraft specifically, really. This douchebag archetype can be found everywhere. They want explanations for every single thing that slips regarding provided plans, and they want them immediately. As a customer, they don't directly answer to us as individuals. They answer to us as a whole. This is an important distinction that few "customers" seem to understand. if you were to take their demands and 'requirements' to a foregone conclusion, every single internal meeting at the company would be a free audience event, and every time something changes and anybody doesn't like it, they have to immediately issue a heartfelt apology. Now, aside from the obvious reasons this wouldn't work- such as it being impossible to give a heartfelt apology, because apologies are for transgressions and slipping on a schedule isn't a transgression by any standard definition of the term- there is the fact that it is a bit difficult to identify such a transgression when we are the ones being provided something.
Say I get a coffee at a coffee... place. Well lots of places sell coffee, so use your imagination. Now, Imagine I find it to taste very slightly old. Do I complain? well, personally, I wouldn't. Why waste time over what was a 2 dollar cup of coffee? I'm not here to be waited on and have cherubs bring me a perfectly brewed cup of coffee- the only reason coffee exists is for it's caffeine. If I wanted a really good cup of coffee for some reason, I'd make it myself. Part of me (and, full disclosure, I used to work at a place that sells coffee much like this) thinks that people go to buy coffee just so they can complain about everything. Now, personally, my limits are pretty deep; It wouldn't have to be quite disgusting for me to not drink it, because it's more or less morning medicine to me- if it's palatable, well that's a good bonus. Now, if one of them takes a giant Dump in my coffee, I might be a bit nonplussed, even if it doesn't actually make it taste different, it's still a bit of a social faux pas to take a dump in another persons coffee, particularly if they paid for it.
My point? well, the problem is when we have folks that don't think they got the exact right amount of sugar, or the exact right amount of cream... or their coffee isn't black enough(I wish I had made that one up.)... and treat it like the person had taken a dump in their coffee. Like it was the worst experience they had ever had. As if their entire day- no- their entire life- is now ruined, because of that one douchebag that apparently put slightly less sugar in their coffee than they desired, and they weren't going to stand for this utter injustice, and demanded an explanation. This is sort of what we are seeing here- "They haven't fixed lighting yet- this is the greatest injustice in the world!" Type stuff. Demanding an explanation, an apology, and god knows what else.
Nope, I don't know how "Software Development" works. You know what else? I don't care. That's your problem to deal with, not mine. If you make claims about things that are going to be added in the future, then Software Development happens and they aren't, guess what? I don't care what actually happened, all I care about is the fact that you made claims you ended up not being able to fulfill. If you can't deliver something, just don't promise it, is that really too much to ask?
And two other things: first, entitlement. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it, 99% of the time when people play the "entitlement" card what they're really trying to do is undermine any sense of responsibility in our society. To these people, nobody owes anybody anything, and it's exactly that kind of mentality that leads to greedy corporations like, oh, say, EA, screwing consumers as badly as they can for as much money as they can still get. Pride in the product? "You're an entitled douchebag, you'll take what I make and deal with it!" Integrity? "You're an entitled douchebag, I don't owe you anything!" Simple honesty? "You're an entitled douchebag, be happy we tell you anything!"
And secondly? Don't try to intimidate me. I've met scary people and you, Mr. Disgruntled Programmer, aren't scary. I don't know if you'd tell me you want to murder me to my face or not, I'm guessing not, but if you did you'd better pray I don't take you seriously.

You my friend are what wanderer calls a douchebag and a plain out hater. the only things I hate in minecraft are the haters. I'm done with people like you
Wanderer all I can say is I have run out of like posts for the day (the little green button) We will fight the haters/ douchebags together using only the power of reasoning!!! With the help of mojang of course! Thank you for making this tread AMEN BROTHA'!!!
Even when theres something I dont like thats added to MC, theres two things I do. A, ignore it in game, or B, go to the recent updates forum, and discuss with others how they feel to see if my opinions can be persuaded.
This is a topic where it should go one way. People should respect the people who work at Mojang. They made this game and without them the stupid people out there can criticize them. The world we live in makes me sick to my stomach. What If they said they things you said to them to you. Lots of people say I don't care, but the fact is that they do can. I love the people who work at Mojang and I think they are doing a great job.
Thxs again for this topic Wanderer.

When you decide to use mods, you do it knowing full well that the game continues to update and that each update will break current mods. You have every opportunity to not update. This is the worst complaint I hear. Update broke my mods. Oh, boo hoo. I'm still griping all this time later that they took development time to make bats. Booooo hoo!

And Mojang doesn't treat us better than EA does? Mojang is ten steps forward on exactly what you're complaining about, so how about focusing less on small failures and slipped schedules and realizing that your entire argument is basically chasing ghosts? You're arguing just to argue. I gave a well-worded post intended to remind some of the spoiled children on this forum that the people on the other side of the internet are real people, and all you can do is whine and complain about the lighting engine and the mod API.
Nope they ruined it, now 80% of the terrain is flat, generated structures don't even spawn correctly, swiss cheese caves, some of the generated structures and biomes are far too common, want to only build on flat land go to a superflat world, want to build a house in survival learn to terraform or find a plain, desert, tundra, or swamp biomes, grass colors disgusts me, espectialy swamp and EH, mountains pale in comparison with the superior to the old one, btw we dont want the old terrain anyways, just for them to vastly improve the current one, I don't see ANY improvement of the current terrain gen
Now back OT
I am not sure if I have the same version of Minecraft as you, but the is pretty much no flat terrain, except in deserts and plains. There is also much less blocks floating in the air and the horrible looking cliffs which were like everywhere. Your argument about the generated structures is invalid because most of them were released after 1.8.
wtf? I thought everyone at Mojang was a humanoid robot that was making Minecraft to place human test subjects into a virtual world to track their behavior so they could be able to learn to better act like humans so they can fit into society easily without people suspecting that they are in fact not human, so they could then send word back to the underground bunker housing the rest of the humanoids that it is possible to fit into society without being thought of as an outcast?
b-b-b-but the piracy hurts them as a company! t-they deserve respect!
Oh god, the stupid, it burns!
First off, this topic has nothing to do with piracy, no one has said that they get hurt as a company when someone pirates.Second off, I don't follow your logic; what, is them having a really nice break room making them not worthy of respect or something, I have no idea what you are getting at.
The main cause of the issue is the fact that you are dealing with communication on an internet forum (and in this particular case, one where the average user is a self-entitled, pre-teen twit). The relative anonymity of public forums cause people in general to treat other people like crap, all the time, everywhere. Mojang's employees don't get a special pass just because they made (and are updating) an awesome game. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying that that's how it is.
Yes, they are people. So is everyone else that posts on every forum on the internet. That doesn't keep people from treating each other like crap everywhere. I do agree with what you are trying to say, but feel it really should apply universally across the internet, not just to Mojang employees.
As for the devs themselves, I'm sure they are great people, and I bet they would be a total blast to hang out with and work with. And for the most part, it's pretty obvious that they try really hard to please a mass of people that are impossible to please.
But they are not without some faults. Everyone has faults, it's part of being human! And as anyone who has seen the internet for more than 1 minute of their life will tell you, nowhere are people more willing to point out your faults than on the internet. If you can't handle a constant stream of unfairly harsh criticism, then you should never even connect to the internet. That's just internet life. I would hope that any Mojang employee would realize this, and take the rantings of the masses with a very large grain of salt.
That said, the only problem I have with your post, is that you seem to be promoting the notion that no one should ever say anything negative, even constructive critism, against Mojang's dev team, because we have "no right to". I'll assume that that's not what you meant, but it's how it comes off. And that's the type of thing I have a problem with, and the only reasonable counterpoint to your post...
I'm sure you've seen it. Some new feature is released in a snapshot. Someone mentions that they dislike the new feature, or simply certain aspects of how it was implemented. And it doesn't matter how politely or constructively he expresses his concerns, within 3 posts someone is going to rip into him for having the audacity to question the god-like developers.
In that case, who's really the one committing the worse sin? The guy who is trying to politely suggest that the feature may have some undesirable effects? Or the second guy that just tore into the first one for expressing an opinion? Like I said, I understand the point you are trying to convey, but the door swings both ways.
Oh god, the stupid, it burns!

You, sir, missed the point. A for Effort, though.
Wellllll apparently you think the power of reasoning can be beaten by arrogant dismissal and personal attacks, 'cause that's what you're using now! Complaint against Mojang that you can't actually deny? "Chasing ghosts, upvote the rah-rahs, BOO HOO whine some more kiddies!" I guess we're seeing your true colors now, huh? You're all nice and respectful until you find an argument you can't refute then you just try to beat it with verbal barbs and needles!
It's alright though! You're showing your weakness and insecurity, buuuut that's not so bad compared to some others here. I'm still tempted to get mad over that lessons comment, but hey, I can tell that you aren't trolling and at least you didn't say you want to murder me!

MartyLoup and Pinkamena_314 do not seem to get the point of this thread. This is not about bowing down to the developers and kissing their feet, even if they treat the community like crap. It's to respect them, and realize that they slip up sometimes, and cannot fulfill every request you and others make. In fact, it would be impossible, because someone might request, say, removing a mob, while another adds more types of that mob. The point is, we should respect them, and not treat them like they are God or robots.
Now, you might be saying "but but but, they are very successful, so why do we need to be so nice?" Well, being rich doesn't make you able to do anything. All it does is let you do better at what you can already do, and some things aren't even affected.
Besides the point, your whole argument is flawed. You are bashing the thread, based off of respecting someone, then bashing the people supporting that cause. That says a lot about you.

Pointing out fallacies to undermine an argument is also a fallacy...
The point is, we should respect them, and not treat them like they are God
That's the burden they took on themselves when they decided to create a world and stand as final arbiters over it.

True, but they are extremely friendly and try to please the fan base .However, when an update has a feature that they don't like, they act like Mojang committed an unspeakable act against Earth, no, the Universe. They cannot stand for such an act of horror and must treat them like dirt from then on out.

for you, op
I looked up the definition.
There are 10 definitions. So much for concise wording. Is this the one you were after?
"one who's inferior intelligence results in them making a complete titface out of themselves in public "
Of course that's using Slang. The actual Definition would be Low-born, undistinguished, and Vulgar.
Point being, I've got no clue what you are bloody well saying.

You know what it is? Apathy.

10/10, you tried hard
If you're referring to "pleb", it's short for plebeian. For someone as smart as yourself I'd expect you to know that.
Yes, Amazingly consequence fre-
*Game changing update that breaks every single one of my mod, Developers of said mod sometimes give up because of updates*
Y know, Because bats are like, The most important feature EVER
I Solve practical problems
When you decide to use mods, you do it knowing full well that the game continues to update and that each update will break current mods. You have every opportunity to not update. This is the worst complaint I hear. Update broke my mods. Oh, boo hoo. I'm still griping all this time later that they took development time to make bats. Booooo hoo!
What can beat the power of reasoning? Unlike a certain pinkamena, you take the lessons espoused by the character in your avatar seriously. Have an upvote in return, friend!
You, sir, missed the point. A for Effort, though.

Mind blown, man.
b-b-b-but the piracy hurts them as a company! t-they deserve respect!
Oh god, the stupid, it burns!
First off, this topic has nothing to do with piracy, no one has said that they get hurt as a company when someone pirates. Second off, I don't follow your logic; what, is them having a really nice break room making them not worthy of respect or something, I have no idea what you are getting at.
Like I said, I understand the point you are trying to convey, but the door swings both ways.
look i don't know either i was up late and the post just sort of happened, okay?
