Honestly, i'm twelve and i don't like Minecraft too much. Most people don't like it because it has "bad graphics" etc., but I don't like it because it's just the same process over and over when you start a new world...
In my opinion, I think it's overrated. People make all these over exaggerated claims about the game and worship it as if it was a god. I've personally gotten WAY more enjoyment from other games much more linear than Minecraft. It's still a good game, just not "the pinnacle of all game design".

Overrated? Pfft.
If there was a top 100 list of overrated games, Minecraft would probably not even rank.
Games such as GTAV and COD are good examples of overrated games. They have no innovation, aren't too creative, and basically only involve going around a killing things (GTA more or less).
Minecraft isn't an attention getter. GTA, COD, and other AAA company games have promotions and commercials that spray the game's notoriety everywhere. Minecraft? It got famous because people played it and suggested it.
It's not considered perfect by some people and some people actually think it's horrible. Someone who hasn't played Minecraft most likely will say they haven't heard of it. However, COD games, GTA games, and the newer Halo games are known by people that may not even own consoles that play the games.
Sure, Minecraft's got merchandise and ports to other consoles, but those were decision made by other companies that wanted to spread Minecraft's fame with permission.
In conclusion, saying Minecraft is "Overrated" is a bit like saying Braid is overrated because it's a short game, or Terraria is overrated because it's just a 2D Minecraft.
Minecraft is very user-friendly game to people who want to be creative. 3D modeling programs? Too complicated. Drawing? You might not be good at it. Gmod? It's takes awhile to get used to.
Minecraft is simple, clean fun that doesn't really need more or less popularity or ratings than it has now.
I've personally come to like Terraria a lot better than Minecraft.
That being said, Minecraft is still a great game.
I think Minecraft has huge potential, and could be an incredibly great game.
Right now, though, I find that a lot of that potential hasn't been used yet.
I feel like the game is seriously lacking in content and is way buggier than can be excused.
I also feel like recent updates have been more destructive towards the game's potential rather than constructive.
In fact, I find myself wanting a lot of things reverted.
Lots of hours into Terraria and I have a hard time saying Minecraft is in any way better other than the fact that minecraft is 3d and Terraria is 2d.
I guess I could say three reasons why I personally think Minecraft is more popular.
First, Minecraft has the whole redstone stuff, which adds a whole extra aspect to building; while Terraria has wiring, Minecraft has certain aspects about its wiring that makes it superior.
Minecraft machinery gets complex, and so there's a whole part of the community who deals with it.
Second, while both Minecraft and Terraria have console and mobile versions, Minecraft has both a pc and mac version while Terraria is PC only(though I really wish it were for mac).
Last, I think Minecraft probably had a lot stronger of a start than Terraria, having numerous youtubers doing it.
Little kids are getting involved and millions are as well. It is overrated because of this little kid gamers are coming in to join da club, at this particular time.
A new game? You could preorder it since 2009! This is not new. There is some other games in which you get resources to build and stuff. Look up "Starforge", so much freaking amazing.
An A LOT of other games keep being updated all the time. So Minecraft is not the only one of its kind.
Still waiting for an update to Starforge aren't you?
Well, I have to say just my opinion, first, I knew abou MC because of a PS popular game called Little Big Planet, there was a MC level, so I played it, I have to admit the MC Little Big Planet version was more entertaining than the original one, cause I played it on my friends house, the "real" MC was really dissapointing for me.
And well yes, I think it is a lot of overrated, comparing it to other creative games such as Little Big Planet, that is for me a lot better, and you camd do more things and yes you can also make MC 3D in Little Big Planet, but no Little Big Planet in Minecraft… It's still a good game but it isn't for that overrating.
yes, and that is something people don't bloody understand! i am not a hater or anything, but the game is so overrated, that i think i will place it on the number 1 spot on a top ten overrated games. first, the community. they f*** you over if you say 1 bad thing about it. second, the new launcher. i hate it. (the new launcher) third, i am geting bored after playing for 2 hours. fourth, modding f***ed up. much simpler before the horse update.
1) Play on SP or start a LAN with friends
2) The new launcher is lightyears better then the old launcher, but thats just an opinion I guess.
3) Are you settings goals? Add mods, when you add a mod you think looks cool, Minecraft can get a LOT better
4) Edit your profile and set minecraft to Beta 1.7.3
Minecraft's popularity has really died down a lot the last year or so. There was a huge boom in popularity a year or two ago, but now if you don't go on the forum and don't visit Minecraft youtube channels, you will likely not hear anything about Minecraft for quite a while. I tried it out because everyone used to rave about it and everywhere I looked there it was. I can go months now without seeing a Minecraft post on Facebook or Youtube or anything. People who play it play it and don't really go around spreading the word anymore.

to me i would say you are wrong! there is basically no better game than minecraft.
Try some Kerbal Space Program some time.
On topic: Even though i have been terrible at redstone, building, and survival. But i do like the command block side of the game. It is a great game if you only have 30-60 minutes of time to play. Although i can find better games, it still has a place in my heart

Finally someone gets it. Modding was never easy for the game anyway, it should be more user-friendly in my opinion. I agree that it is not a bad game, but it is definitely overrated. I've actually heard people call it the best game ever, which I completely disagree. For what it is worth in my opinion the best game ever made is The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Minecraft is an okay sandbox game, but doesn't really expand its boundaries that much on that note. Garry's Mod has much more wiggle room in the sandbox feature. With all the tool gun options, that would be an example of expanding. I like the survival feature actually, that is well made. I think my real problem is how it expands to other games. Sure there are a few maps for example TTT inspired by other games, but there shouldn't be any more than one per game (*cough*Minecraft*cough*). There are also a few server owners who have the nerve to make their server run a 24/7 Minecraft map, yay . What I am basically trying to convey is that its an alright game, but it isn't as good as people make it out to be, it is highly overrated and not very innovative at all.
Minecraft came as a breath of fresh air. The Gaming market is saturated with shooters and other genre specific games with linear gameplay. Minecraft lets you pretty much do what you want.
Whether or you think it deserves high praise or not is up to you. I'm glad it's doing so well. Because when that Minecraft killer game comes out, it will be glorious.
What? What logic allows goat simulator to beat Minecraft?
OT: I've been seeing a lot of references to Garry's Mod, let me point out the obvious that people overlook. Garry's Mod relies almost completely on content from the steam workshop, and this gives an unfair comparison given that we are comparing vanilla Minecraft to modded Garry's Mod. So, throwing out mods from each, we have a game where you can place objects and put them together through tedious welding, versus a game about placing objects and building structures with little effort and the ability to create your own maps and practically mod it in game. Hmm, which one of those wins?
That said, I do have Garry's Mod and it does have its advantages, such as the fact that not everything is block based. Counting the skin system in Minecraft as "modding" Garry's Mod allows you to pick a much wider variety of characters, but one clear disadvantage is the lack of survival mode.
Now, adding in the mods to each game, Garry's Mod gains more weapons, explosives, and vehicles, whereas Minecraft is just as flexible as java, allowing for ridiculous amounts of customization, pretty much everything can be created. I've seen override of vanilla and complete rewrites of physics, I think Minecraft wins.
In conclusion, I can clearly state that Minecraft is not overrated. For those of you comparing Minecraft to Terraria and LittleBigPlanet, here's a quick comparison;
Terraria and Minecraft are similar but have different strong points. Terraria focuses on adventure and combat where Minecraft focuses on mining and building. Terraria does have notable features, but it's 2D nature makes it hard for Minecraft to have some of them, so considering limitations Minecraft definitely comes out on top. Terraria also lacks a creative mode.
LittleBigPlanet is much more advantageous than Terraria, but it still has 2D. However, it can be argued that LittleBigPlanet is in fact 2.5D, meaning Minecraft should be able to support most of LittleBigPlanet's features. LittleBigPlanet 2 has microchips and logic gates, not to mention controlinators. Microchips seem difficult to add to Minecraft's 3D nature, but LittleBigPlanet 3 has 16 layers, which pretty much is 3D. I believe it would be entirely possible to add LittleBigPlanet's features to Minecraft, so LittleBigPlanet has an edge over Minecraft. It does lack survival though.
You obviously failed to understand my intended sarcasm. The person I replied to said "there is no better game than "Minecraft" ; so I decided to compare another mediocre game to it.
Oh, there are some that love goat simulator to no end and I don't understand them, so I didn't catch the sarcasm.

Minecraft is different from other games, it allows the player to let flow their creativity. You can litterally create whatever you want in minecraft, from simple fridges, to pixel art, and to even computers! This said, minecraft allows you to craft whatever you want to with no limits

Let's do some math.
1/3 = 0.333...
1/3 * 3 = 1
0.333... * 3 = 0.999...
1 = 0.999...
1 - 0.999... = 0.999... - 0.999...
0.0...1 = 0
0.0...1 * 10... = 0 * 10...
1 = 0
