Depends on if your hardware has the proper drivers out for Windows 8. It's entirely hit and miss right now.

I've heard rumors that minecraft will not work on Windows 8, can anyone confirm?
Untrue.
Also: re above: Windows 8 uses the same Driver model as Windows 7. Even if a manufacturer doesn't have Windows 8 specific drivers you can use the Windows 7 version of the drivers without issue, not unlike now 7 could use Vista Drivers.

Not really.
If you visit support as much as me, you'll find that there are a lot of WIn7 drivers that don't appear to work on Win8.
so it works for some, yet doesnt work for others, DAMMIT MICROSOFT!
Not Microsoft's fault, they did a pretty good job getting out the RC to devs before it went final.
The majority of the issues are either user or manufacturer of the graphics cards.
The first time I booted up Windows 8 on my computer, I could play Minecraft, no drivers required (which was a lot better than 7, which was a hassle to install them).
I have played minecraft on windows 8 and it runs fine, but there's no sound, only when u destroy things, maybe this is just my computer but I don't know.
Win8 as a whole is Win7's core built with a new GUI layer (Metro). Nothing should change and run just the same, but then again this GUI is intended for touchscreen. If it's not a touchscreen, there's certainly some question as to how they're working around this. Might be differently implemented per manufacturer, so w/ bugs we might consider listing where the PC came from and see if there's a trend. Might see a lot more HP or Acer listing (just pulling names out of a hat).

I've seen plenty of people get it working.
Not really.

Windows 7 Drivers only work if they get installed. Most users that get the error regarding no 3D accelerator didn't install any driver.
I have walked users through installing 7 drivers on 8, and it still doesn't work sometimes.

You mean RT, correct?
Windows RT is a mobile operating system, very different than Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro.
Actually those rumors are untrue, a user named DewaledDeJagger made a tutorial here
(Don't thank me, I'm not him)
