This message is for the Notch if you're not the Notch, this Leie Feedback and confirm that you are on my side:
The creators of Mineshafter should be prosecuted not true? Minecraft has a Million Dollars and because of the Minecraft Mineshafter lose more than 10% of all the money, ie: many players have the Original Minecraft only for the reason of having a Skin, that means many people will stop buying the minecraft and will download the Mineshafter! I think Minecraft Administrators should take a serious Providence, because you can say that Mineshafter is a cheap copy of Minecraft! Take a Providence and report them!
I agree, pirates should never be allowed such complacency as to have an actual static website for their activities, but Notch doesn't care, he's even said so. His stance on piracy is an unequivocal "Meh".

Every time someone pirates a copy of Minecraft, Mojang does not lose money. Here, let me explain why.
In order for a company to LOSE money, there needs to be a potential sale. You cannot assume a Pirate is going to buy something, so the "potential sale" is never there in the first place, therefore, no "hypothetical money" is taken out of Mojang's pocket.
Since pirating isn't "stealing" persay (Yes, it is taking an item illegally, but I'm getting to that), since the item is not "lost". It's like photocopying a book page. Can you legally do it? No. (Most books do not allow duplication) But the original page is still there. Piracy is exactly like that -- You're just making a copy.
Since you're not removing something from a "pool of games" (CD keys, item keys, etc), and merely copying an "existing" copy of the game, Mojang loses nothing, since the potential sale was not there to begin with, and they are not "losing" an account/CD key.
Notch has already taken a firm and honorable stance on Piracy. Does he want people to pirate? Of course not. But if you are going to pirate, he asks that if you enjoyed the game, and if/when you get the chance, buy a copy. Want to read what Notch has to say? Here you go. The word of Notch.

So, you are complaining because Mojang, after selling 8 millon copies of their game, doesn't care if they don't sell a copy... that was not going to be bought in the first place?
I have pirated a lot (A LOT) of games, but the games that I wanted to buy, I definately bought them. I have only pirated the games that were not good enough (in my opinion) to be bought by me. So... if I was not going to buy the game (for whatever reasson) anyway... what has the company lost?
You have just explained to me why people pirate. Thank you.

For it is foretold that on the great day of rustling, no mortals shall live in fear
I didn't know it was a mystery why people pirated games.
I pirated Minecraft. I bought it because I liked it. If I didn't, I never would have.
Well I was saying is that people do it to try it out or just because its not worth it. It just explains to me why people pirate. Honestly it was a mystery for me that I could care less about.

If people just play a cracked Minecraft just so they don't have to pay, that is wrong. I played a cracked Minecraft so I could see what the game was like (there was no demo back then). I bought the game because I wanted to show support (and play multiplayer). If you play a cracked Minecraft and love the game, you should do the same.
Other than that, most of the millions of accounts are
A ) Premium Accounts
B ) Non-Premium Accounts
C ) Pirates who smooch off their free version
Honestly, I have been playing Minecraft for a while now, and have never bought it. I use the heck out of this game, and I honestly feel like that for what I have used it for, it is an honor to line Mojang's pockets with my $26.95.
I just pirate games when either:
A. It's hard to get
B. It's inconvenient to pay at the moment, but you want it NOW!
C. Not worth my $26.95, but I still gets the lulz. (Minecraft does not fit in this category)
With all the money that the producers have made from this game, a lawsuit just seems unpractical and selfish on their part. Good job, Notch.
This has nothing to do with people pirating minecraft, and everything to do with people providing a service that purposely works to circumvent the copy protections built into the game. This is illegal. And not in the "oh well golly you shouldn't do it" way that piracy is- this is practically corporate espionage. Mineshafter get's <ALL> the information that is supposed to be going to minecraft.net. This also raises privacy issues. Minecraft.net (and Mojang) have a privacy policy.
Mineshafter does not have a privacy policy on the type of data they aggregate or what they do with it. This would raise questions and it would not at all surprise me if this information was used for disreputable purposes.
I pirated minecraft a while ago to test it out... I really do love minecraft and I will buy the game.... lol just not right now. I really do mean to buy it! Yes, I know, I am an evil man. Blame Notch for saying he is cool with it.
If someone wants to play Minecraft, RIGHT NOW, but they can't afford it, they'll pirate it right? Saying to themselves they'll buy the game the next month when they get their paycheck.
Next month comes, they don't understand a reason to buy it. They have it. It works. They can play with friends etc, so why buy it?
I know a lot of people pirate games end up buying it, but still.
You're right. A lot of people will go, "Hey! Free stuff!" and continue on pirating. You can't really help that. Mojang still isn't out money. While the person goes "Meh, I could buy it.." They still weren't going to since, hey, free stuff.
It's like test driving a car and going, "Man, I really loved that car. I think I'll buy it." and never coming back while still driving another car.
I pirated minecraft a while ago to test it out... I really do love minecraft and I will buy the game.... lol just not right now. I really do mean to buy it! Yes, I know, I am an evil man. Blame Notch for saying he is cool with it.
Just because Notch said it's "okay" doesn't give people the right to do it. He isn't giving people the A-Okay to pirate, he's just saying that if you do pirate it, eventually buy it. You're falling into my 'Meh, free stuff" category of "I could... but I won't." Pirates like you make the better pirates look terrible. But, to each their own I suppose.
Exactly. That's why I want to buy it, so I can actually use it to the fullest extent.
I played on servers all the time while on my pirated Minecraft. Granted, I was Steve (I'm still Steve) so skins weren't an issue for me since, well, I'm in first person 100% of the time -- I never see my skin.

LOL. I am making good pirates look bad? What? You either pirate stuff or not. But I think you know what I mean. I really don't pirate much at all. When I do It is to play games I have long since lost. Like dling diablo 2 cause I dont want to dig out the disks. Or downloading music, I already own and am too lazy to convert to wav. So I download it. If I like something I still buy it. If I pirate a game I don't like I don't buy it and I dont play the pirate copy either.
The notch said it was OK thing was just a joke. He knows that if someone likes the game they will buy it. Like I will. LOL. It's just that too many xbox games that I NEED, have come out in such a short time. My video game budget it stretched. I will buy minecraft though. Just not this second.
Bad pirates are those who dont pay for a single thing. Even the things they love.
I can add my own "reformed pirate" story here, nothing special but still. Back when MC was in Alpha, before 1.2 and when creative was free and part of the MC website, I pirated the full game to see if it was any good after liking creative mode. My PC was terrible, so it couldn't run it for crap, but I still loved it regardless. I bought it because it was wonderful even with the godawful lag, and it's been with me through 2 generations of crappy computers before ending up on my nice newest one that runs it smooth as butter. If I hadn't pirated it, I wouldn't have bought it due to limited money and a garbage PC, but the sheer fun of it made it worth buying in spite of the setbacks.
P.S.: If one good thing comes out of this thread, it's "The Notch". I say we refer to him by that from now on just because.
Here you demonstrate exactly the point that others have made against the whole thing. You would pay for Minecraft, but you NEED to buy other games first? Sure.. For a start you don't 'need' any game, but that's beside the point.
So you don't pay for Minecraft, but buy other games instead (presumably because you can't so easily pirate console games). You promise to pay for it next month. So what happens next month when another game that you absolutely must have comes out? Do you think 'I really want that, but I have to pay for Minecraft'? No, you put off paying for Minecraft and get that other game instead. And then the next month, and the next, until eventually you don't even bother telling yourself you'll pay for it eventually.
What annoys me is the entitled attitude that a lot of people have these days; like they have a right to play whatever game they want. Gaming isn't a right, it's not something you are entitled to. Gaming is a luxury, one that you pay for. If you can't afford a game then you don't get to play the game. It's as simple as that.
Huh, I always thought if I can't afford the game I could just download it anyways and play it for free.... LOL whoever said it was a right? Minecraft it the only game I play that I don't own. It's not like I pirate every game I play. And I know I dont need any games, that was a joke. But fallout, skyrim, cod, halo 4, RE6... those are all games I want and cost 3x as much as minecraft. You guys are just mad that I am playing minecraft for free right now.
Would Jackie Chan eat a jelly doughnut without going "mmmmmm"? No. And I wouldn't not pay for minecraft. Graphics are the most important part of any game.
You need to get off your high horse and accept the facts: if it's possible to steal, then people will steal. Fear of God or not, all they care about is self-pleasure. They use stupid excuses to justify their arguments. Are we any better? Here, we're justifying buying basically a toolset that is updated constantly, thus requiring a rewrite of the security code every time.
Is anyone willing to change their game's security every single time a new version comes out? I wouldn't cause that would be a waste of time that can be used towards making a better product and money which also can go the same way.
I am neither for nor against pirates, but the fact is that they're here and we're not going to get rid of them like the common cold. Pirates are everyday people, they are a many-headed beast with no heart. Let people pirate, you're going to lose money either way because if people don't pirate the game, they just give their copy to another friend who gives it to their friend and so on (used game). So, either pirating or sharing, we're all perpetrators of taking money from Mojang, yet they still update. Why?
Cause they are in it for the enjoyment people feel when playing it. They want to share their product to the world, not profit off of it like some evil empire like Apple or Microsoft or Wal Mart. We need more coders like them, who are willing to put the effort in even when they know that it's going to be a loss one day.
LOL. I am making good pirates look bad? What? You either pirate stuff or not. But I think you know what I mean. I really don't pirate much at all. Your diablo ref and your music ref are invalid. Provided you live in the united states, you are allowed one backup of any media you own a physical copy of. You own a Skyrim soundtrack? You can download the music and it won't be illegal -- you purchased a copy. Same for Diablo.
That's not piracy, that's backing up.
What games do you "need"? Halo 4? that's not a need, it's a want. A need is something you have to have in order to survive. Water, food, shelter, warmth. I doubt a FPS counts as a need.

LOL I said I was kidding about needing it. I was also joking about being able to afford all those 60$ games but can't afford minecraft. Hahah, Im not really trying to defend pirating, that would be hard to. Just saying that, yes, I would rather buy those games than pay for minecraft. And honestly, I have no excuse besides being lazy and not wanting to set up a paypal account! But I will buy the game.
