I feel that most of the new content hasn't really added much to the game. We get a few new blocks, a few new mobs that really don't serve a purpose and some new items too; but these really don't add anything special to the game. Alone, core gameplay is still very plain.
- Poor combat mechanics
- Lack of interesting terrain generation
- Few new features
- Mob spawning is predictable and doesn't add any difficulty
- Newer mobs offer nothing unique
Given, some neat things have been added like the ability to control pigs, write books, or make potions. I've actually remember seeing a lot of the talks and concepts for what was planned to be in Minecraft originally, and it isn't here.
We wanted dragons, sea monsters, nightly zombie raids, awe-inspiring bosses that truly challenged your progression. We wanted survival, yet I get to sit in my impressively assembled castle sorting through my chest of useless junk. This isn't survival! There's nothing to survive against except the magical creature on your back that sucks nutrtion from you every time that you jump. Mobs are just dull and uninteresting, offering no sense of danger. Once you've built a reasonable building, you're safe.
Here's my thing: I truly feel that the direction of development took a hard-left from what the orignal community expected and wanted. I just wish that Mojang would actually add something that could enchance the supposed experience that survival was suppose to offer.
I COMPLETELY agree with this. When I first started playing, it was just AMAZING thinking of what was next, and reading the ideas Notch was talking about! I have so much more to say, but I can't really seem to word it well.

1.4 added a bit, but it didn't change the gameplay at ALL. Wow, a boss that griefs the F out of the land, a dinky witch, some interesting new farming stuff and an amazing Map item revamp. A few of the nice things they've been talking about for a while, such as the corner stairs...
Other than that, the game plays exactly the same.
I want it, therefore everyone does and Mojang needs to listen to me.
Childish.
I'm not trying to spark a flamewar here. I'm simply trying to start a meaningful and interesting discussion about features that could be added in the future and exactly what everyone else wanted out of the game.
No one is here to shoot down your opinions or beliefs, so please, don't try to do that with mine. You'd be a hypocrite of the worst kind. Also, if anyone has some recommended mods that add some interesting features, that'd be great. I tried Technic, but it didn't do much for me and weighed down my system.

The people on the forums are not the majority of people playing Minecraft. The ones who voice it stronger than others are the ones that get noticed more, and so that becomes "the general opinion" for the people not voicing their opinions.
Also, this is not a board for discussing future updates, or suggesting things, so it's not going to get much attention.
Sorry boss, it's too late, by posting this thread you already got a flamewar in your hands.
Exactly these kinds of topics end up as flamewars, no matter what the subject. Take for example a single terrain post in the Recent Updates forum sparks war #1039.

I disagree with your "we wanted" statement, but I do agree that development lately is lacking a certain pizazz, not to mention flair and je ne sais quoi. It's like they're just coming up with ideas, some themed, some not, and tossing them in. But since my attention is aimed more at the upcoming technical upgrades, I don't really mind that they're not doing anything as revolutionary as, say, the Nether at the moment.

"Sometimes, I just wanna give up, say 'I'm done with this mess' and go to bed. But you know what; you can't shrug off your responsibilities. You got to pull yourself up and meet the challenges head on. That's the only way you're gonna get ahead in life."

At the moment it seems to be a jigsaw puzzle. You got a few pieces here, a few there, can't figure out one part so you shuffle it for later when you solve the other side and eventually you finish it and throw it a-
- Poor combat mechanics MC is not about combat you know...
- Lack of interesting terrain generation Ever heard of epic mountain formations that still take place? I've seen LOTS of these epic ones!
- Few new features Witches, flower pots, a new boss, wither skeleton, mob heads, added bats, added beacons, added new farm plants, added coloring armor, and much, MUCH more...
- Mob spawning is predictable and doesn't add any difficulty So you want a zombie inside of your house? A creeper too? It's not very predictable, you are in a cave and next thing you know you are ambushed my a horde of mobs.
- Newer mobs offer nothing unique Wither Skeletons give you coal, Withers give Nether Stars which will give you a beacon, Witches will drop potions, and so on...

Minor dupstep... Doomsday. DUBWUBWUBWUB, WUBDUBDUBDUB, DUMDUMUMDUM, WUBWUBWUBWUB!
- Poor combat mechanics MC is not about combat you know... Would still be better if it had a better combat system.
- Lack of interesting terrain generation Ever heard of epic mountain formations that still take place? I've seen LOTS of these epic ones! Yes, but mountains still end up being... mountains... Underwater terrain could use some real work, and the landforms in general seem very basic (mountains, rivers, swamps, ponds, and ravines seem to be the most interesting at the moment... They could add things like canyons, lagoons, er.. any kind of underwater landmark, etc.)
- Few new features Witches, flower pots, a new boss, wither skeleton, mob heads, added bats, added beacons, added new farm plants, added coloring armor, and much, MUCH more.. Witches... Are fine, I guess. Flower pots are good yes, wither skeleton is basically a zombie with a sword, mob heads seem kinda awkward when used for anything other than a helmet. Bats are extremely laughable right now but are a cool idea. Beacons are kinda cool, but the area is so small, and the mobs are so easy anyway. By the time you can make a beacon you can have enchanted weapons that one-hit kill anything, so they're basically just cool aesthetics. New farm plants: "Oh, excellent... More FOOD!" I see the point in carrots for controlling pigs, but why do they have to be so hard to obtain? You have to hope that you'll find a village, or that a mineshaft will have one... I think they should be slightly more common, like what they did with cocoa. Coloring armor...... .... How often do you wear leather armor anyways? I guess this is another thing for aesthetics (hanging it on a wall), but that still ends up looking slightly odd, as most of the colors look kind of weird framed in dark brown. The new boss is an ultimate flying griefer... And like I said, beacons are practically useless for survival anyway.
- Mob spawning is predictable and doesn't add any difficulty So you want a zombie inside of your house? A creeper too? It's not very predictable, you are in a cave and next thing you know you are ambushed my a horde of mobs. If you are in a cave and randomly get ambushed, it's because you didn't light it up enough. I personally don't have a problem with the spawning mechanics, but it IS predictable.
- Newer mobs offer nothing unique Wither Skeletons give you coal, Withers give Nether Stars which will give you a beacon, Witches will drop potions, and so on... Wither skeletons drop one of the most easily obtainable objects in Minecraft... Great. They're actually really only there for their heads, which they rarely drop. So you get to do lots more mob grinding with that epic combat system Minecraft has... :\ Withers do give you nether stars, or rather, a nether star. Good for one beacon... One beacon that serves the same purpose as a dirt tower with torches on it but looks cooler. And you have to basically fight the wither in a place you don't mind totally losing. Or on a floating obsidian platform or something crazy like that. Good luck. Witches, if you can find and kill one, drop generally random and semi-useless items or a low level potion. I guess they can be a nice added bonus on the end of an "adventure" if you find one on your way home.
Conclusion:
Survival needs work, but creative and mapmaking are getting a lot cooler. As a starting-out mapmaker, I like these updates, but as a survival player, they aren't helping much at all.

Where's a proper combat system? Why is the terrain so bland? Why do I get to swipe at the same skeleton with my hyper-sword?
Don't tell me that everything that I wanted was added because I'm already complaining that it wasn't.
I want it, therefore everyone does and Mojang needs to listen to me.

Are you addressing that to me? I don't cause terrain flame wars, because I don't play vanilla survival much anymore.
At the moment it seems to be a jigsaw puzzle. You got a few pieces here, a few there, can't figure out one part so you shuffle it for later when you solve the other side and eventually you finish it and throw it a-
uh, maybe not that last bit.
Step 2. Find a good CTM map.
Step 3. Survive, or die.
Step 4. Repeat until you are a master at surviving.
What's a CTM map?
Who is Vechs? You have to stop assuming people know everything and everyone in the Minecraft community.
