So it is illegal to distribute minecraft jars. We all know that. What about a custom launcher that downloads the minecraft jars without requiring a premium account? How is this more legal (is it?) than gettting one from your friend? Also there is a link (which i won't post so i don't get in trouble) where you can directly download the latest minecraft jar for free. Why is this like that? Why doesn't mojang set up authentication for the download? And say the reason is 'quality control' or control of 'profit'...What is stopping me from coding a launcher that installs a virus in your minecraft jar which is retrieved from mojangs servers? And what is stopping me from putting an authentication system into said launcher that makes you buy accounts from me, to play minecraft which is downloaded from mojang? <- I could probably make tons of money off that actually...but is that legal? and we can't send minecraft jars to our friends who own the game?
Because piracy always finds a way, always have, always will. The best thing a company can do is to make sure that their product is available to the masses at affordable prices.
Very well said syfaro and actually very true. That's the one good side piracy has. The people that truly like the game will actually buy it. Developers don't lose money if people pirate the game, but will gain money when those same pirates buy it.
actually all of this so far makes perfect sense...i can't believe i didn't think of those arguments for piracy that i've used in other arguments many times.
one thing I think is interesting is that they make it fairly difficult to obtain a jar, if you aren't programmer or a similarly inclined person.
The updates were coming along well in the beginning. This last one has taken forever. They (mojang) have explained that the update took so long because they turned the client into a server as well. Well this has caused an assortment of bugs and crashes. You can run over to the support section of this forum and see the damage this has caused. Most players did not even want this function to begin with so waiting so long for an update that added little in terms of "NEW" content was just a major let down and inconvenience.
I think the game started off very fun for the players and developers alike. Now it just seems like a company trying to make money off of people. I have nothing wrong with following that dream of being rich and successful, but what the developers need to understand is that Minecraft is extremely flawed in many ways and their only hope at continuing to make money is to listen very closely to what the people want. More and more I read tweets, comment replies, etc from the dev's and staff just plain being rude to people. I mean they completely ripped on people for asking when 1.3 was going to be released, then 2 weeks before the release they start advertising and kissing ass and explaining what the delay was. To me, it would appear as if the staff/dev's have developed the typical hollywood personality and attitude about this whole game. Basically saying f you, if you don't like it don't buy it or play it.
A company that has done little to add "NEW" features and content to the game should be a little more humble and grateful that it's fans have sat around and waited on them this long. I personally regret purchasing and supporting this game after reading some of their replies on twitter to people and seeing their whole god like complex they are developing. Basically they have made a shell of a game this about 10% complete and they rely on the modding community to make it worth playing for everyone. Their bug fixes have created many more bugs, and the little features they have added are minimal and abysmal at best. I know they are "busy", but a team of 1 modders can spit out an improvement within one week for the game and he/she is not taking money from people to do so. Basically it's no one's job to make this game "playable" except the dev's that are getting paid to do so.
You would think they would be a little more humble because once this minecraft fever passes they will be left with little in the wake of fans and will be forced to charge people a monthly / yearly subscription fee. Once you realize that all you do is build and mine over and over the fun is taken away from the game because you get good and fast at it, unless your a lego freak that absolutely loves to build things, your going to tire quickly of this game. And I say that meaning the vanilla version's that the dev's release, not the awesome mods and servers out there running and working on their own dime, those guys make awesome features for an other wise plain boring game.
Minecraft is what it is, but honestly I don't recommend anyone purchase this game as I see little in the way of content and features being added. I see the updates containing bug fixes and that's about it, the dev's seem to be tired of it, and the company in general is more focused on royalties from merchandise than profits from sales of an improved game. In a nutshell, they didn't care if you pirated it because they were passionate about their game and wanted everyone to have an opportunity to play it. They were hoping that those pirates would eventually buy it themselves or tell enough of their friends/online buddies about the game and some of them would buy it that otherwise would have never heard about it. Now I think they realize that the game is not going to continue at the rate of the boom and they want every penny from it before they start working on "better", other projects that will surely follow the same fate.
Sorry so long, this is something I have been wanting to try to explain for a while and finally found an opportunity to do so.
I have had fun with Minecraft for nearly 2 years, without ever using mods, so I think it's fine. Also, Notch said, and I believe it's on the Minecraft main website, that after sales die down and a certain time passes he would release the source code as public domain. When you say "Once you realize that all you do is build and mine over and over the fun is taken away from the game because you get good and fast at it," you really show that you don't like the game anyway. If you don't like building, or mining, I'm not sure why'd you play this game for much longer than a few hours.
Basically, pirating can work as free advertising, as sometimes pirates will just buy the game after they realized they like, tell their friends about it, etc.

Well for starters I assume you're talking about the pre releases, which have never and will never be guarenteed to run well, they're for bug testing purposes. Although a lot of people use them for the wrong reasons (myself included), to use the new features, doesn't mean any issues resulting from using snapshots are Mojang's fault. I also disagree that little new content has been added, unless you mean that the content they added (trip wires, coloured wood, reversable stairs, rotatable logs, enderchest etc.) already existed in mod form. In that case, i still think it's good they added those things to vanilla anyway, not everyone can be bothered running mods. And although, I wont say other people aren't having problems, the game is running much better for me in the new pre releases.
How is minecraft "extremely flawed"? Sure it's got a couple of annoying bugs but nothing game breaking, it's certainly not the shovelware you're making it out to be (look up Prison Tycoon 2, now that's a game I'm angry I bought). It sounds like you're saying Mojang only cares about money and are ripping their customers off. The game costs 20 euros, that's pretty damn cheap and I know personally I have gotten more gaming hours out of my money than I do for most games. I see every update they do from now on as a gift from Mojang, and not something I deserve because I payed 15 euros for what is now a complete game.
Well, based on what I see here on the forums, I'm not surprised that their tempers might get a little tested every now and then. It seems like a lot of people think because they paid 20 euros for a game, that the developers must kiss their ass and listen to every little nit pick, complaint and suggestion and develop the game accordingly. Mojang haven't owed us anything since 1.0 went live. Sure a few bug fixes are par for the course for pc games post release, but they are still constantly fixing bugs. The fact we are still getting new content is an amazing bonus, not that I don't believe it is in Mojang's interest to keep supporting the game and further sales in the mean time.
A company that has done little to add "NEW" features and content to the game should be a little more humble and grateful that it's fans have sat around and waited on them this long. I personally regret purchasing and supporting this game after reading some of their replies on twitter to people and seeing their whole god like complex they are developing. Basically it's no one's job to make this game "playable" except the dev's that are getting paid to do so.
Well this is more of the same, so i'll just reiterate my opinion. Minecraft is pretty damn complete except for maybe a few minor bugs. Minecraft's fans can be pretty rude to the developers, again I wouldn't be surprised if their temper gets a little short (although i don't really know the examples you talk of, I don't follow any twitter feed). Although unlike you I don't really care if a developer gets a little heated on a twitter feed, just so long as they don't try to add DRM, charge for dlc that should've been in the game in the first place or remove access to the game i payed for (EA), they can have the worst attitude for all I care.
To me the game is very playable the updates are great and a far cry from "abysmal" as you put it, it makes me wonder, if maybe minecraft just isn't the game for you? There are a bunch of games I have no interest in playing that I wouldn't criticize just because it doesn't suit my particular tastes. It's ok if you don't like Minecraft, you don't have to hate the developers just because you bought a game, that ulitimatley you don't like.
You would think they would be a little more humble because once this minecraft fever passes they will be left with little in the wake of fans and will be forced to charge people a monthly / yearly subscription fee. And I say that meaning the vanilla version's that the dev's release, not the awesome mods and servers out there running and working on their own dime, those guys make awesome features for an other wise plain boring game.
Again with the "humble" thing, what do you want from Mojang? To be nicer to people on twitter? So long as they're not putting DRM in their product and are charging a reasonable price for a good product (a point we clearly disagree on) who cares if they're rude on twitter? As far as the subscription statement is concerned, it's not going to happen, for starters I'm not sure they could even legally do that, now they have already sold the product to the customer. Even if they could do that, they wouldn't, if you read Notch's twitter feed in regards to his philosophies on game development you'd know Mojang isn't that type of company, something which is far more important than their replies to their very demanding fans on twitter.
When I was a kid, I was a "lego freak", In Minecraft, I love to build things, the game suits my tastes very well and seems to have endless possibilites in what I can do. Again, I just don't think you like Minecraft very much, which is fine, but it does not mean Mojang have sold an incomplete boring shovelware game. It just means it doesn't suit your tastes.
Minecraft is what it is, but honestly I don't recommend anyone purchase this game as I see little in the way of content and features being added. Well Mojang have already made millions off of minecraft already, In many ways I'm surprised that they are still working on it, the fact they are demonstrates they do care about the game, because as you said, the Minecraft fever is dieing down.
I can't think of another game that continues to update the game with new content well after the final release that doesn't charge for it. As sad as it will be when Mojang eventually do stop working on minecraft, they are allowed to move on from the project. They don't owe us a lifetime of perfect bug free updates because we bought a 20 euro game.
Well, that's all I wanted to say in regards to my opinion on your comments. I don't have a personal problem with you nor do I want a huge argument. I just wanted to share my opinions, maybe I have too much time on my hands...
Well I expected the immature "troll accusations" from the Minecraft "Gods". So thanks for living up to your stereotype.
RebD, you made some great points, and yes I bought Prison Tycoon 2 as well, I was so excited when I got it out of the box and installed it. After about 20 minutes of gameplay I could not keep my prisoners from escaping. The point I was trying to make about Minecraft is that I (MYSELF) can see why people would want to pirate this. If you google about Minecraft and come across any of those tweets, combined with the complaints about bugs and lack of content, you would be a fool to purchase a copy. I don't think they owe us anything at all personally, but as long as they are still charging people to purchase the product, they yes, they need to listen to those people. Or like you said they "don't have to kiss our ass", that's true and look at so many other companies that shared that same thought, they no longer exist. I still play Minecraft, I make apps to go with the game, and I do livestreams as well, but again I don't recommend supporting drama queen dev's. The work is hard, they are getting paid for it, people are always going to criticize everything you do, if you can't handle that in a professional manner, then stay out of the public. That's my opinion. All game dev's or anyone that posts anything on the internet for that matter is subject to criticism and abuse, just like the guy that called me a "troll" and told me to "bugger" off to another forum. I can take it on the chin like a big boy, or I can start to flame him and make fun of his country and the use of the word "bugger", etc.
It's all about presentation and quality. Minecraft is lacking both, sure it's a great game at first, but how much coal can you gather? How many rail systems can you build? Each cave is the same, go down, further, further, done. The mods are what add character to this once cute but now lame game. Don't assume that I am the only one that feels this way, go and look at the suggestions here, and remember too that the internet consists of more than this forum and porn sites (not accusing you personally of looking at porn all day), MANY people feel the same way I do. Sure the sci-fi guys that love to build replicas of the death star are having a blast spending months accomplishing that task, but for a gamer that is seeking something to do minecraft is lacking that. And if I am so wrong about it, why are there millions of mods that do exactly what I want. Why does this forum have a "mod section" devoted to making the game better? This is not "Vanilla Minecraft Forums" lol, so take it easy, accept my right to post my opinion and don't act like such fan boys because you come off as hostile and that is just another reason not to support this game.
Don't take this as an insult, you responded intelligently and made some good points. It's the trolls accusing others of trolling that should be insulted. Just remember people everyone is entitled to their opinion, I was listing my reasons for not encouraging my friends to purchase this game, and I am entitled to do that.
Why is it that everyone is fanatical about big hueg games like Battlefield, CoD, Halo, etc. even though it takes up to seven months to get any sort of free update that isn't just a bugfix, but people get seriously pissed off if it takes more than two months for Minecraft to get updated?
I mean, seriously, why?
Also, it's hard to say that they're only in it for the money when all you have to pay for it is less than two months of WoW. I mean, seriously, it's fifteen pounds. It's not even a subscription fee. Fifteen pounds and it's yours.
Finally, I just want to point out that if you're really going to make fun of a brit/australian for using the word 'bugger', "YALL" must have a really skewed vision of the world.
We did not invent the Algorithm. The Algorithm consistently finds Jesus. The Algorithm killed Jeeves. The Algorithm is banned in China. The Algorithm is from Jersey. The Algorithm constantly finds Jesus. This is not the Algorithm. This is Close.

@RebD:
Because those are quality games that are complete upon release. 15 pounds is not the issue, would you pay any money for fake food, or have eaten dishes? Pirate the game is all I was saying and calling people a troll when they post a 5 paragraph statement outlining their views and opinions is what's warped, not addressing someone saying "bugger"...sheesh.
It doesn't matter because it's just free advertising to them, more people buy it because of using the cracked versions.
one thing I think is interesting is that they make it fairly difficult to obtain a jar, if you aren't programmer or a similarly inclined person.
