I see lots of let's play videos where people will make a wooden axe, shovel and sword. I even saw one guy make like 10 wooden picks in 1 vid. I am assuming many people that don't do lets plays also make wooden shovels, axes and swords. But why? What is the point?
I agree. I understand, obviously, that they would make a wooden pickaxe to get stone to upgrade. But making all wood tools in pointless because you could just easily make stone ones.
I have no idea. I usually make an pickaxe and/or an axe out of wood, and never touch wood tools again.
Unless there happens to be an odd bizarre incident that's never happened where I lose a lot of progress and lose all my tools and cobble, in which case I make another (pick)axe for gathering stone and wood.
Ten wooden picks? What a waste of wood...

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
I just make a wooden pickaxe, mine some stone, craft a stone one, burn my wooden one as fuel, and never touch wooden tools again. Cobblestone is a lot easier to get than wood, so I think wooden tools are a noob trap, like golden items, snow golems, and chicken breeding with wheat.

I'm going to mash signature stuff together: I tested 100% positive for MC addiction, I'm a black knight, support crappy trees, my color is red, and microsoft destroys to a cactus.
I don't know, I could honestly ask the same question about people who make iron/diamond tools besides picks.
I use the iron pick to mine resources the stone one can't, and I use iron weapons.
But for the most part, I use stone tools only, and leather armor. Because both of these are easily acquired resources.
when i first played minecraft I didn't even use a wooden pick. I made the sticks yes, but I survived a creeper explosion that rewarded me with cobble (take in mind this was back in 1.5). So I didn't get a wood pick. (this prevented me from getting many of the achievements though).
Unlike most other people, I never waste my first wooden pick. Get wood > make wooden pick > get cobble > get stone pick > use wooden pick until it breaks.
There's never any point in throwing it away when you may as well use it on coal & stone until it runs out or use it in a furnace. Just throwing away is silly.
The thing is, wooden tools mine/dig slower than stone tools. Since stone tools are very easily acquirable, there is no point in using a wooden pickaxe.

That's debatable.
For me, it's easier to get full iron armor than full leather armor (I don't have a cow farm, though). Plus, iron is a somewhat easily acquirable resource. Look for a cave, and you'll easily get iron.
Most effecient way:
Get wood> Make a wood pick> get stone> make a stone pick and a furnace> go into a cave> get iron and coal> smelt iron> Make iron everything.

I know but you may as well use the wooden pick instead of wasting it, right? If you can't be arsed waiting an extra few seconds by using it, why not put it in a furnace?
indeed, no point in wasting it, i cant tell you how many times ive been scouring ruins of peoples houses in a server, and every time i open a chest there are so many wood tools, it isnt even funny.
I think I may of made the full wooden set back in alpha when I was still new to minecraft (did anybody else put 4 wooden blocks on the ground when their friends were trying to explain how to make a crafting table ) but since then it's always been:
Wooden Pick -> Mine 3 Cobble -> Dispose of wooden pick -> Get Iron -> Get Diamond -> Use nothing but diamond.
There's not a lot else to use diamonds for.
i did that too. now i feel ridiculous, for asking how to make the most essential piece of equipment in minecraft.

No, they look like something else.

Nice information there solruki. I can see you will go a long way in Minecraft using only pretty wooden tools.

Me too.

Other then the quote above I avoid anything wood.
