I'm a jaded gamer who has played just about everything and is mostly bored with what's out there. Minecraft is different in how it promotes creativity, open endedness, emergent gameplay and individual expression. I know there have been plenty of games with similar sandbox style charateristics ( Spore, Terraria, Dwarf Fortress, etc.), but I like Minecraft's style the most.
The problem is I'm 28, and almost every clan seems to be predominately composed of teens. I'm reluctant to join these groups not necessarily because they might be immature, but it feels awkward. It makes me feel like a stalker. It also makes me feel older than I am. Does being almost 30 and liking Minecraft make me a manchild? I don't know.
Are there any old fogey clans out there I can join? Cause playing single player is entertaining for only so long, and there are a ton of cool possibilities and interactivity that I think you can only explore in a good Minecraft MP server. I don't want anything too complicated though, I like to play on the casual side. Reams of rules and regs, economies, classes, ranks, complicated mods or plugins etc, just makes my eyes glaze over and tests my already short patience/attention span. Let's just build cool stuff, roleplay, fool around with TnT and crap.
I'm 34 (almost 35) and one of my friends which plays and also hosts a server is 36. All together there are 4 of us, of which 3 host our own private servers. There are two younger guys at the age of 21 we play with daily--It's usually me and the one guy age 21 on the most. I also have my two boys ages 5 and 9 which I let on my server on their shared account under supervision and have op privileges removed. My friends are good sports as well and let them on their servers. Both of my boys respect the rules as they are taught to respect others.
I play a little bit on the "White Server" (I believe it's the owners last name and not a racial thing) and occasionally check out some of the other free private servers just to see what others have built.
I do prefer our private servers since the only griefing that occurs is performed only after a good back-up is verified. Sometimes we have accidental griefing like me yesterday loading my cannon, but I back-up at least once daily and several times if there has been a lot of activity. I remote into my PC from my phone and maintain everything, so it doesn't matter where I am, I have access to my PC if it is up and running.
Anyhow, I believe you are far from being the oldest guy on Minecraft. Send me a PM sometime and we'll see what we can do for access possibly. We have a list of specific mods which need to be installed to join the server due to compatability. We always play creative but set up elaborate defenses and traps at our homes for when we switch to survival mode (which rarely ever happens).
I'm 41, work full time as a state employee and still play almost every night, holiday and weekend. But then again, I don't have much of a social life...
There's nothing wrong with playing videogames (or enjoying any hobby) as long as it does not interfere with your domestic and economic responsibilities. Never be ashamed to do something you love if it's not hurting anyone.
As for the community range, I'd say a majority of Minecraft players are pre-teen/teen, but that's true of a lot of games. I'm sure if you got some friends playing with you it would even out your experience, or you could create your own Minecraft group for a demographic you feel is under-appreciated in the community (near-thirtysomethings).
I'm actually serious here.

It does seem like the community skews towards an early teen demographic, and it can be a little frustrating being an outnumbered adult in the crowd. But at 28 you're nowhere near the oldest, no.
NEVER feel like your to old to do anything. Im 25 and 4-5 guys that I work with play... and we are all around the same age. We consider ourselves "closet nerds" and to top everything off, 3 are Police Officers and I'm a sheriffs Deputy... I mean we live normal lives just love gaming.

At any given moment those red pixels could be either polkadots or hearts.
