Not sure if I'm posting in the right area, but here we go.
I just started playing and I'm not sure what I should be doing. The game is very addictive and frustrating at the same time. I recently got lost and can't find my original home. At my new location, I've burned through most of the trees, so now I'm affraid to go out since I won't make it back by night. Unfortunatly I've had my fill of building temporary shelters.
I recently dug into a cave that was really awesome, and have been trying to figure out to get down into it. I also came across what looked to be an old mine. How does that get there in single player survival, when I should be the only player?
I'm having a good time, but it seems difficult. I just noticed seeds, and how it would be fun to start over. I don't know what to do.
I guess I'm rambling because there is no forum category for someone as new as me.
One real question: I'm playing single player creative. Should I be involved in some multilayer world? It sounds like multi player is hosted on player run servers. Is there a griefing problem in multilayer? And if so, where can I learn to secure my area (which might be helpful in single player as well).
Which leads me to another question: How do I keep bad guys out of my home even though I put up doors?
There needs to be a newbie guide that goes beyond day two. Something with some mob behaviors and things to help you not get lost or come home to baddies in your house waiting to kick your butt.

Love the game btw, and I'm not really complaining - just looking for the middle tier information. There is either your first two days, or advanced modding; nothing in between.
1. I suggest setting a goal for yourself- something you want to build or somewhere you want to go- a big goal- and sticking to it.
2. Abandoned mines are relatively new, they are randomly generated similar to the way caves are generated.
3. If you get bored of the landscape around you, do what I used to do and just collect your valuables and take off in a random direction.
4. I wouldn't recommend getting involved in multiplayer yet. There are griefing problems on a lot of servers, and you'll need to spend some time choosing the right one.
5. You can't, I suggest looking for a server with protection provided. This is something the moderators can give you that prevents people from griefing your stuff. Unless you are talking about the new zombie-door-smash feature, in which case I think iron doors solve that problem.
Also, like nivram said, the Wiki is your friend. However, please don't go and read the entire wiki. It completely spoils the feeling of discovery.
Man savor this moment youre in! Savor that you are new with the game and everything is new and still exciting! For instance you say you dont wanna go out because it might be dark before you find your way, *Keep that fear of night in your head* Thats one of the things that keeps it good is being honestly afraid of going out at night.
And like SuperZac said, dont read the entire wiki/ or whatever minecraft guide. If you do then it leaves nothing new or cool for you to discover. IF you had read about the abandoned mine you talked about before you found yours, would you have had the same *shock and awe* reaction? No cause you saw it coming
Savor it man while its still new!!!!

I will always be hitting + for an informative or otherwise good post.
Thanks for all of the replies! I did mean to say I'm playing survival, not creative; but my attraction to this game is the creative side.

How do I do this safely?
It was exciting to find the abandoned mine, with water to avoid and lava to try to get to. 40 blocks straight down out of the blue.
I have cheated a bit and tried the resource map thing, which brings me to another question: with rare materials, how on earth do you find them without a cheat? Do you just essentially excavate the whole map? That could get old.

Thanks again!
What a sweet game.
