I'm making a castle for my faction and I wanted to know some good ways to defend it against enderpearls and TNT cannons. I was thinking a main floating house that is completely closed and netherrack roof.

You could just cover the whole castle's walls with lava waterfalls, making entrance close to impossible.
Just remember to make the walls high enough so your enemies can't get a bucket to reach the lava source to remove the flow, that could stop them for a long time.
Edit: Are you trying to have everything in your castle? like food, trees, etc?
Make a three block high, two block wide tunnel, with torches on the top layer just below the roof. Make the roof out of three layers of gravel. If you have to retreat from enemies, break the torches to collapse the gravel roof, blocking enemy access.
And a nice trap : Two bunkers on either side of a canyon, disguised as canyon walls, with pistons raising and lowering dirt to expose bunker windows. Put archers in each bunker, and rig the bunker-window controls to a pressure pad in the canyon. Lure enemies into canyon. They step on the plate, open the bunkers, and get a face full of arrows.
I'm playing on a faction server right now, but apart from ganking at the PvP borders not much seems to happen at all...
But yes, lava, and maybe a collapsible tunnel to get in...
I'm on my iPod right now but it's called minesanity, I'll look out for you.To prevent TNT cannons I'm claiming as much land as possible and building a wall around it and an inner wall to make it even harder
Fctions was easy until ender pearls came along. I used to have a wall with water on the outside and lava in the middle of it... However. Your main problem would be ender pearls. There are 3 ways that i can think of that will prevent your castle or whatever being infultrated:
1- Build your home underground. That way they can walk all over it but cant get in. I have made some incredible underground homes on factions. And whatever you can do above ground you can do underground (pretty much). Just make sure to block off nearby cave systems and build deep down so they can't creeper bomb their way in.
2-You could build a glass dome with water around your base to prevent them getting in. That way you can still see outside, are above ground and people can see your awesome building.
3- You could build a VERY high wall. However this would probably be not the most enjoyable thing to do and they can still build 1x1 towers and chuck the pearls over your wall.
Those are the 3 ways i can think of. Hope I helped you. :smile.gif:
If sethome is active, as well as spawn, make the base only accessible via sethome, so no entrances. If you must have an entrance, reseal it after each use, and the entire staircase, not just the front blocks.

Have a guard post of skeletons, if you can get a spawner :tongue.gif: Put them in a defended location (a wall and a moat?) and let them kill the baddies that are after your castle! They will be completely unprepared!
*Note- You might want something to supplement this since I have NO idea if this would work :tongue.gif:
Alternating rows of obsidian is sufficient to keep out unwanted players. Use an enchanted lvl 4 or 5 diamond pick to harvest the materials faster. Use a bucket of water on the ground next to you to turn lava under/around the target block into obsidian and prevent it (and you) from falling in lava beneath it.
Now another issue... if you have the land claimed so only you can break blocks, do not forget that creepers can be "encouraged" to blow up next to walls. the only way to effectively protect against this is alternating rows of obsidian all the way down to bedrock. Which is very resource intensive.
If you want to only protect from the ground level up, try building your fort in the middle of the water. Build it 1 block above the water level starting with obsidian around the outside, a row of cobblestone(other blocks may be more resistant to creeper damage) then another row of obsidian. If you build it a few blocks inside your claimed territory, you can also add another level of defense by putting another 2 rows of obsidian outside of your base in such a way that creepers cannot get to the wall. For example, on the very last row before your territory ends, place one row of obsidian 1 block BELOW the surface of the water. On the second to last row place the obsidian 1 level ABOVE the water level. Your wall should be at no closer than the 4th row from the end of your territory. IE: FSPUW F=Fort Wall, S=Space, P=Protective barrier above water, U=Under water barrier, W=Wilderness. This prevents creepers from being led to the wall as they instinctively jump when in water causing them to float and unable to sink below the outermost row of obsidian. The second row will prevent them from jumping over and cannot get on top of it because it is not at the water level.
You can also move your wall several (up to 8) blocks inside and then create a flowing block of water flowing away from your wall causing creepers to be pushed away and unable to explode against your wall. Also keep in mind that creepers blowing up in water will minimize most (if not all) damage to surrounding blocks.
Obsidian is also great to protect your valuables from creepers blowing up your chests exposing stuff inside. Try building a vault with the stuff. Remember you still have to get to your boxes on a regular basis (more often than the enemy) so your idea must allow you easy access. Pressure plates and switches cannot be used as invaders can use them too. I have a method that I have been using, but is not easily accessible therefore I will not post it here. If you have a good idea, please let us know by posting it. One I have not implemented or tested consists of using a minecart or boat to transport you through the obsidian vault wall.
Now none of these techniques will stop all attacks of themselves, but if you layer the defenses, it will be effective in slowing them down considerably giving you time to respond or discourage raids altogether.

I like this concept, however it is practically useless, mobs are only a minor hindrance to skilled raiders. Skeleton spawners are much more effective INSIDE your base and used as a resource collector.
Perhaps you could make a room underground, containing furnaces, a workbench, and a chest with crappy items inside, and hide the real entrance via pistons and a hidden button? Lava beneath the room's floor might help protect the base.

Also keep in mind in mind x-ray packs. They see through walls... but not through lava if you are above the lava. If you are underneath, you can see every chest, cavern, etc on the map.
I have tested the boat and minecart through a single hole in the wall... it works until they get pushed into the wall and you suffocate.
I usually hide my base near bedrock (A bit higher so there's not too much void fog) and make the entrance at the bottom of a nearby lake.

I was planning on building with it ounce I got enough. The exit could be a door and pressure pad that drops into water.
