I disagree with this. Everything from the beginning up to the latest version relies very heavily on crafting -- every time you turn raw materials into a more finished product, whether that be food, tools/weapons, redstone devices, etc., you use the crafting table or the furnace. I really don't understand why you think that Notch didn't do enough for the game related to crafting.
As far as mining, I think the additions of the abandoned mineshafts, cave spiders, ravines, and strongholds were primarily to make mining more challenging and enjoyable. Some people wanted more ores added, and Notch responded by adding Lapis Lazuli.
If you are expecting more out of the crafting and mining aspects of Minecraft, then you will have to add more detail to what you are expecting.
Again, please provide some examples of what you would like to see added to the "core aspects" of Minecraft. Just using the phrase "core aspects" without any further information is too broad of a statement to make.
There are lots of people who think Minecraft is just too easy. Adding the Nether aspect as a prerequisite to brewing was an obvious way to add more challenge to the game. Enchanting, on the other hand, really only has one challenging requirement -- diamonds.
Again, you are going to have to provide more details about what you mean by "mining options" and "tools".
I just want a more engaging world. I'd like to see a material progression like copper->iron->steel->etc->etc
I'd like to see biomes that actually offer something new for finding them. Bones in deserts, special wood in jungles, food, etc.
Core aspects: the original things in minecraft that made it minecraft. The building and mining aspects are what I loved.
I'm not hating on the new features, I just wish the world of minecraft was more "worldlike"
Because the game is called "mine"craft, I feel like we should have more mining involved. More tools could me different tools (see the InfiCraft mod for examples) and the new materials could be used for all sorts of things. Buildcraft and industrial craft have great advancement trees, but they aren't very accessible and require odd ranges of materials. The game really lacks of progression field. I don't feel like I ever accomplish anything. Even finding diamonds is a joke. The core aspect of the game was to explore. Now I don't have any reason to.
You first say that enchanting should be more "accessible", and now you are saying that finding diamonds are a "joke"? Which is it? Should it be easier to start enchanting, or harder? I am not even going to comment on InfiCraft -- some mods just add too much crap to the game. Your statement about "The game really lacks of progression field" is puzzling, considering that you were just complaining about how you had to go to the Nether to get materials to start brewing. That sounds like one aspect of progressing through the game, if you ask me.
And I would say that the core aspect of the survival mode is surviving, not necessarily exploring.
You are a great example of the blinded mass that sees all the new features and assumes there's nothing wrong. Maybe you never played the original beta minecraft, or maybe you just play creative mode, and never experience the exploration aspects of the game, but I remember when exploring was exciting and gave you a goal. Now theres no reason to explore. If I were Notch I'd add to the material world, like volcanoes and lakes and other interesting landmarks that give the game a lively field.
Come on now, silly.
Sigh... "original beta minecraft".. that phrase says it all, doesn't it?
Speaking of brewing, why do I need to advance to the nether to be able to boil spider eyes and sugar cane together. This goes along with the accessibility of some of the features. I absolutely hate having to find obsidian (Then mine it, which is a chore) just to get to the nether, then I can finally make a brewing stand, something I feel like we should be able to use much earlier.
WORD. I barely care about the rest of the post (though you are pretty much right), but word. Why do we need a blaze rod to raise the temperature of liquids? As if merely placing a bottle of liquid inside the furnaces lying around everywhere wouldn't do the same thing. This character is a guy that can cut metal into ingots with nothing but a few pieces of wood and his fists, you'd think he'd be able to come up with an apparatus to brew potions and solutions (as people in reality have, without blaze rods). And yes I know, this is a video game so it needn't resemble reality, but even the progression makes no sense, since blazes are pretty damn rare and potions are mostly useless.

"When we release a pure bugfix update, people get VERY upset ("NOTHING CHANGED!").. Adding features gives us much happier users. But I do realize that it's only happier users in the short term." - Notch
OP: Maybe you're right about mining and crafting. But with needing obsidian to go to the nether and blaze rods for brewing its to make it actually feel worthwhile. If diamond was as common as coal would it feel like an achievement getting it? no. This is what makes minecraft different from other sandbox games; it's actually difficult to achieve things, which gives you a greater sense of progress.
Agree with you , they forgot about those a little , it would be way cooler if they added Volcanoes and some more Ores instead of all these new blocks ^^ But it's still ok , let's hope for these to change in future.
I somewhat agree with OP.
I would also like to have more to craft with redstone, lapis lazuli and gold,as they seem almost useless to me.
Or maybe another material implemented. There's more than iron and diamonds in real life, why not add some?
I think that was the idea during alpha, but then Notch started to get ambitious and started adding other things.
Not that i hate the other additions, some of them are really good actually.
Then again, more materials and crafting could make a great post-release update, don't you think?
It's all up to Jeb.

I don't really despise the new terrain, but this would be a cool mod.
I don't REALLY agree with you.
I don't think that Notch really went '**** it' and stopped really working because the game got popular, he just reached a point in the mining and crafting where he was satisfied with it. At least when it comes to ores, Notch said that Lapis would be the last ore he'd include. It was left with that. I'm OK with that. Because either we introduce a new mechanic just for one new ore or we get another tool type and screw the **** out of the tool balancing. I might support proper Nether caves and ores, but . . .
At the very least we're on a new leaf with Jeb, so he might add new all of the things [Grammar error intended].
i feel like notch is a little kid who plays with his blocks (HAHA very funny) and leaves them their for other people to trip over while playing with some other toy. Features never seem to be FULLY implemented.
Notch still hasn't added an in-game crafting guide, to ensure that newbies to the game have to look up the recipes on the Minecraft Wiki and memorize them... How user friendly! This was a day #1 problem...
I think minecraft shouldn't have a tutorial, it was funner when i first strted playing in alpha, when there wasnt a million tutorials on youtube, when u had to work to find something out.
you have new biomes which work to provide terrain variation
HAHAHAHA
ha ha...

I do sort of agree with the OP, but not entirely. I agree that Mojang should have tried to make the gameplay more progressive (so that you cannot simply dig down and find the best material in the game) but at the same time all the side things that don't contribute much to climbing the material tiers are fun. I had tons of fun with wolves when they came out, and I think I would have had more fun with wolves than I would have had with a new ore. At the time, anyway.

I made my point. If anyone cannot understand that point, they should not be arguing.
[quote=Badgerz]You have to keep in mind that people are stupid.
[quote=Catelite]Just because you don't understand how something works, doesn't make it broken or pointless. >_<
damn, so i guess i'll just wait for someone else to find this post.

No they aren't. You aint doing it right if they seem like that.
Except those spawn stuck together and it screws up gameplay. And the ravines, too.
yeah... i don't remember people complaining about the secret friday updates. I think it really started with 1.8
Volcanoes sound cool.
