So every so often, whether I'm browsing the Forums, or Minecraft Reddit, I'll see a picture of this absolutely massive, epic looking castle, town, house, etc. Now, I'm not looking to build something like that immediately, but I'm looking for some beginner tips on both exterior and interior aesthetic design. What blocks look good together? What are some specialty blocks (like signs, stairs, pistons) that would make good outside decorations? Every time I try making a cool looking creation it just looks boring, like a stone tower with windows. Lots and lots of windows. I don't mind if you send me a link to an article or video, I'm just looking for tips. Thanks!

Don't just build with one type of block for an entire building. But don't over do with using every block. Mix it up to add accent to walls to make features pop. One thing I do is if I am building with Cobble I will surround any Windows in Stone Brick to break up the pure Cobble feature. If you have a solid face that looks bland toy around with adding stuff coming off the wall or just a pillar right up against the wall that breaks up that plain wall. But again, don't over do any of it. These are my tips but I'm also not that great at this kind of stuff either.
Alrighty then. I guess I consider myself a veteran builder, since Beta 1.0. Like one of the guys above said, check out TheMinecraftMuse. He's awesome. Also, use the very videos you've been watching as a reference. Those epic builds tend to be aesthetically pleasing. Some blocks that look good together are Sandstone and Stone Bricks with a Pine Wood trim and Red Wool floor. Original styled Cobblestone and Wooden Planks are nice, but liven the walls or floors up with some type of carpet. Ruin styled buildings could use a Cobblestone/Moss stone combination along with vines. Of course, all of this varies with personal preference. As per decorations, you might wanna try foliage. A block of wood, surrounded by Hatches, with a fence on top of the wooden block and a leaf block on top of that is a nice potted plant. Experiment with Glowstone, as conventional torches get boring. Work with fences, signs, and fence gates. If you work 'em in just the right way, you get awesome arches and other designs. There's way too many other things for me to say, but just try and look up some sweet (and hopefully practical) things on YouTube. This is about all I can think of at the moment, but many more people should respond. Good luck!
