To everyone who thinks it's "about time" and hating on Notch: He made this whole game exist and you should respect him. He may have got a bit lazy recently, but he's still a great designer and coder.
I disagree with him being a great designer. He got the basic idea for Minecraft from Infiniminer. The game essentially is still in an alpha state despite what they like to pretend. It doesn't have a lot of features a full-fledged game needs. It's a great concept (which again, he didn't come up with), and there's a starting idea for a great game, but it hasn't gone much of anywhere in the last year in terms of having features come together into a really great GAME. People aren't using it to GAME, they are using it to design structures and the like -- well, it's more of a game if you get a ton of mods, but that's not really Notch's doing now is it? Note that the Yogscast and others use it more like a toolbox and simplified 3D model maker than as a game. As a game it is boring and uninteresting and doesn't offer a challenge, reward skill, or anything else. The updates haven't done anything to change that, despite Notch's goal of wanting it to be an adventure game (a goal at which it absolutely fails to be good).
Lots of games start with good ideas, where the creator came up with them or not. A great idea to start with doesn't mean that you'll end up with a good game and the overall development of Minecraft has been sadly lacking.
I don't particularly see why I should have some great amount of respect for him.
Jeb/Jens>Notch. I think Notch is better at making games from scratch but when it comes to working on a game that already has a foundation, Notch goes crazy and tries to add so much he ends up just adding tons of unfinished things.
Saw this coming a mile away. Notch(AKA Fat *******) has basically abandoned Minecraft and left it in a incomplete state. To be honest this is good news for the game. Jeb is much better and will probably get a lot more done. Notch seems to only be good at coming up with ideas and sucks at implementation and actual coding. Not to mention he doesn't follow through with his projects and gets bored easily.
I see Notch as a George Washington sort of character. Or maybe like King Saul. He can get it off the ground, but won't do in the long term. I'm glad he's stepping down, as it's been shown time and time again that Jeb is the better developer at this stage in Minecraft. I'm sure Notch will still contribute, and obviously he'll still start new projects, and I'm happy about that. But I think that Minecraft will be better run under the reign of Jeb.
Under Jeb's reign, I hope to see more content built upon, and less content added at random.
So its between a fat idiot that puts out half ass'd crap ideas that are buggy and aren't complete and are terrible (1.9 +) or a developer that didn't want to go in the present direction of MC and the fact that Notch admitted that Jeb was better... Idk who to choose. :mellow.gif:
Also I don't think Jeb is all that great, afteral if you've ever paid attention to the convention talks, then you'll notice he is a little out of touch with the mod developers who have done great things for Minecraft, where he talks about limits and impossibilities... Which is really just ignoring possible solutions to the problems Minecraft has for whatever issue like time and lack of help. Of course I don't think that could be entirely blamed on him when his position was under Notch, now that he is charge of the game maybe he will do things differently. And the game will be better for it.. or not..who knows.
I of course haven't see any such convention talks. Can you give some examples of what he said?
So, how long until everybody hates Jeb, and cries for Notch's return.
On topic, I do think this is good. Notch has seemed burnt out on the game as of late, and that's no way to work on something. I can remember several long term art projects, flash animations, and game designs that I loved when I started them; but, by the time I was done, I needed a break to work on something different.
Also, what I gathered from the various tweets wasn't that Notch was leaving Minecraft completely; but just taking more of a back seat role so he could work on other things.
I find it pathetic that people think that since Notch has not been working on Minecraft as frequently over the past year, that he has been just twirling around in his chair doing nothing. Notch has been the primary developer of the new Scrolls game, and Jeb has been the main Minecraft guy for a while now. I think Mojang making Jeb the lead is more of a technicality than anything else, considering that some of the most recent ideas added to Minecraft (such as potions and enchantments) have pretty much been Jebs ideas. Maybe this change is simply a way to officially give Jeb the go-ahead to add more of his own ideas to Minecraft without having to pass them by Notch for approval.
Maybe this will also force the rabid Notch-haters to calm down for a bit and realize that a big portion of the things they have been slamming Notch for have actually been Jebs responsibility. But Jeb is not as nearly as fun for the haters to target as Notch as been.

What my question is, who will we worship on RP servers?
Perhaps worship of Talos Notch will be banned on some servers, and there will be a war over who is the true god of Minecraft, with the Stormcloaks Notchians fighting the Imperials Jebicans. That's how I would do it.
Not sure how I feel about this. Notch was the "get things moving and put ideas into the game" guy, where Jens is more of a "finish and fix things" kind of guy. With Notch not having as much influence on the game and moving on to "some other project", things might not go as well as you might think since Jens isn't exactly known for bringing new things into the game.
Though, who knows? This might be the single greatest thing to happen to Minecraft since Redstone.

True dat'.

Now there's an idea: oversized rats! I've always said Minecraft needs more wildlife. Well, they're wild and they're life, so there ya go! :smile.gif:
lol!

NPC Villages, anyone?
The worst thing that could happen is to constantly switch the lead developer back and forth.
After finding out he wasn't born with a dargon soul.
