I had posted this game review on my website, The website if anyone is interested is in my signiture.
Minecraft a very popular online/offline sandbox game. This game is fun to say the least. Unlike a lot of other sandbox games this one has way more freedom. You may ask "How much more free can a sandbox game get?" Well unlike most sandbox games you can not only edit your world and character and even how the game looks but you can also alter its source code, and in turn do just about anything!
4/5 Visual: This games visuals are a little hard to explain it is simple on a small scale but also incredibly complex large scale. the textures are simple 16bit but can be altered to be larger (32x, 64x, 128x...) But the textures are not the total of the Visual complexity of Minecraft. If you look on a large scale there is an entire world full of amazing landmarks. It is very uncommon to see the same thing twice in a world.
2/5 Audio: This game (as it is in 1.9pre6) Is lacking in audio its same old calm.ogg plays at seemingly random moments. the sound effects are interesting but after awhile it becomes a little repetitive. The audio isn't all that bad my favorite part is the Note blocks feature. the possibilities are pretty much endless on what you can do with those. there have been TONS of youtube videos featuring hit songs played on these.
5/5 Gameplay: Minecrafts gameplay is truly impressive. Because of its sandbox like setup you can do virtually anything! there is no definite story to minecraft, however as of 1.9pre6 there is a goal (though you really don't need accomplish it) Minecrafts gameplay ranges from simple survival to creating massive structures
Minecraft Overall Rating
3.6/5
(Disclaimer: Opinions expressed are just that, opinions please do not flame or troll about it. just deal with it.)
3.6/5 seems fair to me... Minecraft is an awesome game, I totally agree, but IMO minecraft does get boring sometimes too. I still love minecraft. I would give it a 4/5
EDIT:
Please notice that you can't play minecraft on weaker computers... :wink.gif:

i'd go for
graphics : 5/5 it may not look that good in the eyes of most people cause the blocks are 16x16 pixels in the terrain.png but if you leave out the texturepack and see minecraft in a shadow on white perspective it becomes way more detailed
audio : 4/5 i love the audio but it becomes repetitive indeed
gameplay : 3/5 the gameplay for me becomes even more repetitive then the audio though the updates were coming and coming so i guess i'll eventually stop playing minecraft because of the repeation. (not sure how to explain this)
overall : 4/5 ... well... do the math :biggrin.gif:

Is the font better now? I didn't realize how big it was until I got home from school, I didn't look at it before I shut Down this morning... Yeah and I might have been a little harsh with the audio rating
Everything is customizable in minecraft, so basicly the rating is given on what you have on your minecraft. For example, photo realism 256x256 good graphics, audiomod + plugin wiht sound takes care of that, and gameplay, well that can be modded too. It all boils down to what you get and what you dont get.
I'd say Graphics 5/5. You don't see games like this. Everybody is used to super leet gfx that have a higher polygon count than real life, so when you see Minecraft it stands out from everything else. Sound: 3/5. C418 is awesome, but the new sounds fail dramatically, at least IMO. Gameplay 5/5. Do I even need to explain?

Thats what made rating this game a challange. But i Based it off the vanilla minecraft with no mods/texture packs
Visuals: 3/5. Serviceable, but they ARE lacking as mods clearly show. 3/5 might even be generous.
Sounds: 2/5. I agree with the above review.
Gameplay has to be broken down into sub-categories
Creative: 5/5. Excellent sandbox gameplay for creating anything you want.
Survival: 4/5. Surviving isn't remotely difficult even on the hardest settings, it benefits from excellent building options though.
Adventure: 2.5/5 (Counting the Adventure Updates). A major problem is that there's no reason to go explore or adventure and we have a bunch of half-finished elements like NPC villages as well as poorly tuned enchanting and potion making. Combat is repetitive and boring.
Overall 3.5 or 4/5.
Mods can easily up some of these scores, of course, but the Vanilla game isn't remotely a 5/5 game overall imho. It has some truly excellent features, but also some things that are lacking as well. You can get the graphics up to 5/5 with mods, for instance. Sounds are a bit harder to improve as are the other things, since there's no modding support built into the game. Adventure is probably the hardest thing to improve via modding, Aether likely does the most, but it isn't a perfect mod by any means.
Just my opinions, mind you.
Edit: I'm not sure the best way to rate the modding situation. Ease of Modding is probably 2.5/5...doable, but not easy. Variety of available mods and vibrancy of the community is more like 3.5/5 or 4/5 (again, difficulty of doing mods and difficulty of making them MP decreases the rating). Then again, that doesn't entirely show how modding can really improve some aspects of the game. Hard to figure out a good way to rate it and weight it off the top of my head.
Anyways, this is a beta, so reviews aren't accurate.
Your point is incredibly relevant. and notch has been talking about trying to fix some of these issues. I will do a new Game Reveiw on this when the Real release comes out.

this game is groundbreaking and in many ways. one way may be in the nature of how you must review it. Most games of this era are like Hollywood movies. Every now and then though you get a crazy awesome game by some indie developer (i.e. Limbo). And so, we have another indie game called Minecraft. The graphics are most likely purposely bad and charmingly bad at the same time. there is not much need for sound, although you probably could use a mellow tune to break blocks to. the gameplay is as good as it gets because it is so intuitive. finally, the replay value is higher than any game out there. this game deserves credit and lots of it! notch created a new "super mario" kinda game. a new genre, something with pigs, zombies, and 16bit graphics. I absolutely love it. Also you have to credit notch with the way he embraces and maybe encourages mods for the game. I love that!!!
Not really, at the release of the last RC notch stated that the game had gone gold, i.e. it is more or less the final version and there shouldn't be any changes to it theoretically. This is just yet more lunatics trying to shout "BETA" even though the game has been done for some time now.

The graphics are bad because notch couldn't be assed to create a more efficient voxel-based engine, and the gameplay is not intuitive. If you can somehow make it through all the content without opening minecraftwiki then you are surely some kind of ****ing genius. And no, notch does not encourage mods for the game. He openly stated he'd have a modding API or source code release before now and it never happened. Instead, he integrated the mods of his choice into his game (usually creating inferior versions in the process, such as in pistons and villagers) in updates that broke the functionality of the mods themselves. The gameplay is not original, it combined the fortress-building and survival of Dwarf Fortress with the first person voxel mechanics of Infiniminer.
Minecraft is a very good game and an excellent premise, but it is FAAAAR from perfect.
