Let's see.
Lots of people say gravel. I don't necessarily like it but it seems vital.
I'm going to have to go with Sponge for now. It's not even really supposed to be in there, can't be crafted, and it serves no purpose.
Gravel's good for pillaring down in caves without taking fall damage. Also a decent weapon if the enemy is in a small space. Hitting gravel is annoying while mining, yeah, but if you're trying to clear out an area it's great because you can clear a whole vertical area very quickly.
Cobweb is a great way of getting string, and since it slows down mobs, it once saved my life.
It's a lot faster to mine Obsidian as of 1.9pre6.
I'd definitely have to go with tall grass. It looks ugly, is annoying to try to clear out, and makes hoes useless (other than tilling dirt)
Everyone here is being kinda jerkish...
Gravel is used for roads and flint, and to "drown" lava. Sponges are used for building and whatnot, stop hating. Every block has its purpose, if you don't like it, maybe be prepared for it next time.
gravel has been in the game since 0.0.14a so, notch won't cave in anytime soon.
after some thinking i believe air is used for an important thing, its used for the internal spaces of dungeons, abandoned mines and strongholds, if air didn't exist those spaces maybe filled with gravel.
well, thats my theory of air, i mean come on, its been there for a VERY long time, since infdev i believe so there must be some sort of use for them..
On Topic: well the only block that i like the less is the, cauldron it can only hold 3 glass bottles worth of water and a water spring block in the ground can give infinite.
I say Bedrock, let people fall to their deaths at the bottom of the world and walk along the top of the nether, or change the nether to have limited contact with the upper Y boundary.m

...Or... uh... something like that.

EDIT: air is as old as cobblestone.
