Ok well hello my name is needle44 but now back to the topic. I have been wondering about this for a long time now, what is better to farm wheat or melons?
Melons:
Melons you don't have to replant almost ever unless you break the stem. But you have to hoe the ground. They drop 3-7 melon slices at least to my knowledge and 1 melon slice heals 1 hunger. Also one melon/stem takes up 2 blocks.
Wheat:
You have to replant and harvest but you don't have to hoe the ground. Drops 1 wheat when full grown and 1-2 seeds. 3 wheat = 1 bread, 1 bread heals 2.5 hunger i believe. One wheat/wheat seed takes one block.
In my opinion melons are better because well first off at the minimum a melon drops 3 melons slices and 3 melon slices = 3 hunger. But it takes 3 wheat to make one piece of bread which heals 2.5 hunger. So let make this equivalent. 3 melon seeds = 3 melons = 9 melon slices AT LEAST! But 3 wheat seeds = 3 wheat = 1 bread! So that's where i get my logic but I want to here your opinions also so share what you think is best.
I think Wheat is better because you can use Bone Meal to accelerate the process and you restore more hunger points which takes less time unlike melons, which only restore one, and when your down 3 hunger points it takes a while to eat it all.
I farm both just cause but yes i agree melons are better but you can use wheat for making bread and cake and im not sure ibut i think 1.9.5 they add monster breeding with wheat
Just a personal opinion, no math involved. I think wheat is better. You don't have to re-hoe, and you can make stuff with it, such as bread, cookies, and cake, unlike melons, which you can only eat (unless you make melon blocks).
Hmm interesting thoughts yes it is true though melons are harder to get because they only come in abandoned mineshafts but abandoned mineshafts are quite common in my opinion. If you have the resources I suggest melons though.
I believe wheat is important but doesn't compare to melons...
I'm sorry what were we talking about?
Don't forget that it does take 3 wheat to make bread.
If you think about it:
one melon, one heart.
3 wheat = 1 bread = 3 hearts.
one wheat, one heart.
Just that bread stacks more efficiently, and you need bread to breed animals.
I think that last fact is makes wheat better, since chickens = meat and feathers, and if you can wrangle a good group of chickens using wheat, and use wheat to bread even more chickens you have a good start on feathers and a good supply of meat, which is even more efficient than bread is, stack wise.
Wheat however can be easily gathered using water. Melons need to be "broken" to collect, and animals need to be killed.
Hmm here's my final opinions. Choose wheat if you can manage to make a huge farm with it being automatic harvest. Choose melons if you just want a small farm and you'll harvest it yourself.

As someone else has already said, you meant "hunger levels" not "hearts".
But, three wheat (1 loaf) is better than three melon slices. Even though they heal the same amount on the hunger bar, the food saturation on a loaf of bread is 6.0, but 3 melon slices only contributes 3.6 food saturation level.
Food saturation levels are hidden, so many people still don't know about them. Read about them here and here.
Melons are better in regards to space. Can even grow rows on top of each other, not easy doing that with wheat.
Food exhaustion should be implemented. Eating the same thing over and over would diminish how much it fed. Would making diversified farming a good thing.

No. You have to hoe the ground in an adjacent block in order for it to grow.
No it can't.
My opinion is they're drastically equal right now.
1 Wheat takes up 1 space.
1 Melon Takes up two spaces.
If you've built a melon farm you'll know that two stocks can attach to the same melon if done improperly.
A lot more wheat can be farmed in the same space a few melons.
Melons also take a lot longer to grow than wheat.
To me it's about equal but I don't know.
I'm sorry what were we talking about?
Chariots Chariots
Stack of 64 bread = 160 hearts.
To get the same amount of healing capacity as bread, you'd need almost 3 stacks of melon.

Hey, that rhymes.
