I think someone posted a topic about how long you've been playing, but I would love to know how you heard about it first? What did you think of it? Did you immediately rush out and buy it or wait for a long time?
I remember I was in Mexico and feeling pretty depressed thanks to culture shock and homesickness. I watched a lot of stuff about video games to cheer myself up. I was watching a video podcast about indie games and they mentioned the documentary about minecraft. I thought it was some strange artsy fartsy game since it had its own documentary. I didn't give it a second thought until I kept hearing about it on youtube and Dorkly.com. I watched a let's play and tried classic, but didn't give it a second thought since I was wary of paying for it.
Months later, in august, another bout of the blues thanks to unemployment drove me to purchase it so I could drown my sorrows in video games. This was on a Sunday. That Tuesday, I convinced both of my best friends to get it, and we've been playing ever since. I can still remember my first world. I built a house out of wooden planks. I thought a furnace was some neigh unobtainable object. My first cave had a lake in it. I dug straight down and found redstone for the first time when it glowed as I stepped on it. Good times...
Been watching Seananners for ages and one day I stumbled across his minecraft videos and then I started looking at CaptainSparkles videos which REALLY put me into minecraft. A few week later I stumbled across yogscast and that convinced me to buy the game. I pretty much already knew how to play the game due to watching enough videos and by 1 minecraft week I was slowly starting on a rectangle castle xP
A friend mentioned it to me, but did a horrible job explaining it... another good friend mentioned it and showed me it... He then bought a license for me. XD Best Gift Evar!
I was on memebase when i seen a comic about minecraft. the next day my friend told me about minecraft, then i said "hey i heard of that before!"
As soon as i got home, i rushed to my computer to try minecraft classic. As i spawned, i was like "EVERYTHINGS A SQUARE!!!!!!" then i thought"... THIS GAME SUCKS!!!"
The next day i told my friend how sucky minecraft was, then he shouted at me and said "WHAT???!!!?!?!?!?! You dont like minecraft?"
So when i got back home, i thought i ought to give minecraft another chance. so i tried classic again and built an epic library and thought "Hey this game isn't so bad after all!!!
So i downloaded the cracked version (=() then months later i decided to buy the game legit.
so i bought minecraft and started to play on servers.

yeah it took some time to convince my friend to play. He isn't really into life sim games, and mc can really come off like a game like that if you explain it wrong. I showed him my world and a few funny videos on youtube, and he decided he liked it, but couldn't afford it. I got him a gift code for his birthday. My other friend took to it right away. I'm still browbeating my sister and another friend but they haven't budged yet.
I logged into my YouTube account, and I saw that a friend had liked a video by Paulsoresjr on Minecraft, so I looked into it. I loved that video, so I got the game and never looked back!
I was on Xgen chat and I heard a lot of people talking about it. I looked it up myself, the game seemed lame but it gave the kind of feel that I can't really explain, and that's what made me like it. I got the cracked version (guys look I'm planning to buy the game full time on 11/11/11) and when I first played it, I had no idea what you're supposed to do in the game but I know what mobs were hostile and whatnot. After I watched some tutorials and other people's videos with commentary, I kinda knew how I can discover the whole mc concept myself. The thing that sucked is that I saw the early alpha videos and I got it on 1.2.6 Alpha and that was time when there wee biomes, so it didn't give the exact feel i felt from the early, outdated 1.1-something-Alpha. ;/
My Friend At My School Got Moved To One Of My Classes And Was Freakishly Obssessed with minecraft and It Was ALL he talked about, so i looked into it and decided it was cheap enough so i put in twenty bucks and got me some 1.4 minecraft!

I actualy never found out in a way as normal people do.... came into my bbros room to see him playing and looked it up, game sucked pretty back back then where u had to only carry 3 slots or items, no mobs but skeles, creepers and others, quit playing till 1.5 came out pretty much

Well... faint word passed around of the game here n' there. After a while, I was being downright nagged into purchasing it... Reaction: "Meh." After words, two other friends got it (ones that I had closer contact with), and seemed to really enjoy themselves on their 'Empire Valley of Chicken Rebels.' After they would log off and head to bed, I would watch PaulSoaresJr.'s tutorials on 'Survive and Thrive' in Minecraft. That hooked me into both his videos and Minecraft itself.
Overview: I got it fer' my birthday back in January '11... It was the best decision I have made in my life! I still play Minecraft to this day, whether I'm on 'SSP', Extreme-Survival, and even SDK when it updates!

I was like "OH MY GOSH, NO-ONE CARES ABOUT MINECRAFT!"
I softened a little, and decided to give it a try.

I did stumble across early Minecraft in 2009 though, and at that time I thought the game's...weird.
