There is absolutely no way that the "3 million+ paid accounts" blurb is even remotely accurate. If it even exceeded 100k, I'd be shocked. 3 million people would cripple their minecraft.net login authentication to death. People would be unable to log in for days on end.
The forums are a good barometer for seeing how many there really are. Take Everquest 2: 10k users online to the forums (162k at its peak), with a player base of 200k-500k, depending on what reports you read. Thats 2-10%. Rift? About 1 million subscribers, and 300k total accounts created on the forums. Not the same kind of number, but still... 1/3 of their accounts are on the forum. These numbers aren't exact at all, but give you good ballparks to estimate.
Now, Minecraft: 47 online.
... ouch.
What do you want to bet that, of those "3 million accounts", its either counting every minecraft.jar download separately (a dozen or more per person), all the hacked / key generated accounts from dark sites... or both.
100k only? wow, i highly doubt they would bother making a MineCon for 100k people, out of the 100k people how many are really gonna go to minecon, out of the 3 million +, like what? 5k is going or so? (rough guess) or less or more. if only 100k have the game, id take a guess and say about <100 people would go to minecon.
you also realize although this is the most famous of the forums it is certainly not by far the only. Also minecraft is played by so many different ages, sex, hardcore or not gamers that some may not even know what a forum is. You are basing your theory on two games played by hardcore gamers, minecraft is not in the same ballpark.
you're both idiots if you decide to cling to flimsy logic like this. while the official minecraft site links to this, this is in all intents and purposes a fan site, just like the minewiki. in no way whatsoever does buying minecraft correlate with people's decisions to sign up for a seperate Curse account just to post on the forums.

No, I don't believe the number one bit.
Also if you took the time to realize how many people have liked minecraft on facebook, over a million, which would be one third and would be the one third you stated about forums. So I conclude it is not a lie and your claim is FALSE. Thanks
When an account is purchased, the server logs in another username into it's premium data base. Plus 3 million people around the whole world is a really small amount. Plus this data has been accumulated since - insert start date -.
Using the minecraft forums as a "more accurate barometer" is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard of. There are forum users who don't posses a premium account, spammers, forum bots, abandon accounts and not all minecraft users create a forum account.
That said, instead of being skeptical of the system, play minecraft. :wink.gif:

Hello, I don't usually follow threads that I post in. So if you would like to have a civilized chat / reply / argument that is of the utmost importance, just PM me. =)
Also if you took the time to realize how many people have liked minecraft on facebook, over a million, which would be one third and would be the one third you stated about forums. So I conclude it is not a lie and your claim is FALSE. Thanks
Also, Notch has 446,195 followers on Twitter, too.
Jeb has 157,000. :3
---
Diablo's twitter (Official source for Diablo 1, 2 & 3) only has 87,000 followers.
World of Warcraft's twitter only has 153,857 followers. *jeb alone* has more than that.
Apparently, of those of you lacking reading comprehension, that I was displaying the ratio of those who have forum accounts / are logged into the forums versus the games subscriber population. 10k in Everquest out of 500k subscribers versus 47 Minecraft people logged into the forums, out of 3 million accounts? No, I don't buy it. 4700, I might. Being off by a whole factor and finding out its really 47k... sure, I'd buy that too. 47 people logged in out of 3 million? Thats just plain gullible.
Dude, it seems every third person I meet plays Minecraft. I can barely go a day without overhearing a conversation from total strangers about Minecraft. You seem to be forgetting that this is an incredibly viral video game, I myself find 3 million accounts to be a little low, in fact. World of Warcraft's popups claim they have over ten million active players (Which only counts active, current accounts), yet I don't know a lot of WoW players. I do, however, know a lot of Minecraft people.
I'm serious, it's that common.

This is where people normally put stuff about things nobody bothers reading.
I like to think of myself as a pretty alright guy.
It's how many Premium accounts are out there. Yes, Minecraft is popular. I know, shocking.
@thenick666 There's also a lot of people with pirated copies, so I'd say there's about 5-6 million, at least, playing Minecraft Beta. There's almost 15 million accounts registered on Minecraft.

I've got a fat 20 bucks saying you're looking at the sectional logged on and not the entire forum itself, because if you were, you'd see something like this:

Agreed.

Give a man a fish, and he'll be fed for a day.
Give a man a puffer fish, and he'll be fed for the rest of his life.
You can even look at the amount of view popular minecraft youtubers get, hatventures, yogscast. Obvious troll is so stupidly obvious. We all know that minecraft is one of the fastest growing games at the moment. 3 million paid, wonder how many people play that don't have premium accounts?

Are you going on the number of people reading the topic, or who are logged on to the forums?
As people are saying if there was a 100k people that have bought the game then yes there will be no minecon and yes Minecraft is popular (very) so I do believ there are 3ml+ that have bought the game I don't know how you don't.
"I can't believe it, therefore it must not be true" has to be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.
You're using unrelated statistics (I use the term statistics loosely) to back something that you simply can't prove one way or another since you apparently have no understanding of statistics or data gathering techniques.
I understand your doubt, but maybe a little more tact in how you approach the subject would have reduced you from being flamebait to simply being a troll.
If you're that peeved by what you see then leave the forum, leave the game, and leave the fun to the rest of us that are extremely appreciative for all the work that the crew at Mojang have put into Minecraft.
The nub went and looked at the amount of people browsing this subforum.
Right now there's only 32 people browsing the discussion subforum, but there's 330 browsing the Minecraft Mods subforum.
Add in all the subforums, and there's a substantial amount of people online right now, even though its 1:15am in the USA (where minecraft has it's largest fanbase)

Also, if you haven't noticed, the authentication servers are down -- a lot.
I remember Notch saying (Maybe in a twitter post?) that 1,800 people log on a minute.
