I nearly always play SMP Minecraft. My husband runs a Minecraft server that the two of us use, and a couple of our friends occasionally join in.. but honestly, it's more me than anyone else. I prefer MP because I don't get as much enjoyment out of building stuff if I can't have other people come along and look at it.
But recently, I decided to try a few of the challenges out there, and have been doing them on SP worlds. I never realized how much stuff is "broken" on MP. (I'm on 1.8.1, btw)
First, cave spiders. I keep seeing posts from people saying how much cave spiders suck and they always get swarmed and die etc and I think "Really? They die easy...." I had no idea that cave spiders give you a poison DoT that can kill you easy if you're not on full health... because the poison is broken in MP.
Also, Endermen are not particularly scary in MP either, because they currently (again, 1.8.1) don't actually come rushing at you when you look at them. They don't do anything. They're just as passive as zombie pigmen. However, I just looked at one in my SP game. He tried to get at me, and I thought I was safe in my castle walls, as I looked at him pressing up against the iron bars I have in the walls. I started to walk away and he teleported through the walls to me! Now, Endermen are not hard to kill, but it was still exhilarating.
So yeah, playing SP is a lot more "difficult" than MP, evidently. Are these things fixed in 1.9? (not that I'm looking forward to dealing with cave spiders as they were intended to be) :wink.gif:
I agree, back around August I started playing a huge role playing server (in fact, it was the #1 largest server on minecraft) on which the mobs were laggy, slow and easy to kill.
AFter a long time I left and came back to single player, and I died all the time because of the new difficulty I forgot about.
I got used to playing on Peaceful since me and my sister share a world and she hates mobs. I turned it back on and am terrified of caves. I need to man up, yo!
I should clarify that I'm not actually "terrified". :wink.gif: I meant it as a tongue in cheek reference to the fact that SMP Minecraft is pretty broken. I love having to fight for my life (I've never played on peaceful, ever), it's just that apparently when certain mobs work they way they are supposed to, they are at least a little more challenging.
The poison is not broken in MP, it's more likely that the server you are playing on has difficulty setting on easy.
When bitten by a Cave Spider on any difficulty except Easy, the player's health bar turns yellow-green and gradually decreases. The venom inflicts half of a heart of damage about every second and a half (or 1.5 seconds), and lasts for 5 seconds.
The server owner needs to edit the server.properties and change the difficulty.
difficulty number
(0-3)
1 Defines the difficulty (example: damage dealt by mobs) of the server.
0 - Peaceful (there is also spawn-monsters=false to have peaceful difficulty)
1 - Easy [default]
2 - Normal
3 - Hard
Also I also think that SMP is somewhat broken, I can't see the stars on the critical strike on Multiplayer, also Critical Strike works somewhat different on Multiplayer when I compare to Single Player. ( I feel that I can critical strike on Multiplayer while going upwards on a jump, but I can only critical strike on Singleplayer when I am falling. )
Also Monsters are faster on Single Player? I can attack faster as well.
It's less glitchy graphically as well.
Funny... so far I've just done single-player. I'm terrified of multi-player, to a degree. :smile.gif: But I can understand how you might feel this way.

Or get the 1.9 prerelease and put a pumpkin on two snow blocks.
I don't want a suicidal friend. Even more depressing!
