Because some people litterally dont understand it, intelligent people mind you not just people who cant use the basic funtions. This one guy who i will not mention (because he made a vid saying he doesn't get it and still got hated on..) has played about 9 hours and still not understood why people can have 100's of hours of playtime.
It is one point in minecraft and that is to have funn.

It doesn't matter what game you play, as long as you have a good time when playing it and that it is a game that is good(if you want to know if the game you're playing is good, just ask).
I have alot of friends who just say "minecraft looks ugly, how can you like it?"
I just get them over to my house and they play it.
They all buy it as soon as they get home!
As the name of the game suggests.
Mine things.
Craft things.
Then make epic buildings wiht your friends.
Or just to explore the wonderful landscapes.
Mods are fun too.

I had a friend just like that couldn't see the point in minecraft , I was constantly talking about it, how i did this and that
finally he got on my computer and played it for a while ... his first creeper hug was what did it for him , he went straight home and bought his own copy ... he's been hunting creepers and building fortresses for the last week almost non stop . he loves it . the point is ...
the point of minecraft is whatever you want to make of it.
The appeal of Minecraft is that you get to do whatever you want. You can mine, you can explore, you can fight monsters, you can build, you can do PVP, and you can do adventure maps. The sky's the limit.
There is no point to Minecraft. That's the beauty of it. You can do WHATEVER the hell you want to do, and you won't be doing it wrong. Play SP as a builder, play as a miner, play as an explorer, or play as a fighter. Play MP on any of the thousands of servers that exist, from PvP to Freebuild, to RP and Survival.
You don't have limits, don't have rules, and certainly don't have to play the game the way it was made. You can mod the hell out of it, get texture packs, and any number of things.

its like you have a shitload of legos, but you have to defend your lego buildings, and if you feel like it, you can wander off and go explore the daycare, and start staring contests with the really tall kid until he try's to beat you up when he loses, and the ******* steals a lego from your building once in a while, and then some other punk with an annoying lisp (who probably has asthma too, since his voice is always raspy) tries to break a chunk outa your lego base, but you have your trusty plastic sword to fend the art hating bastards off, meanwhile some scrawny incredibly pale **** is throwing spitballs at you too, so your time is split between fighting them off and playing with your goddamn legos.

I played the game for 30-45 minutes talking about the endless building possibilities and how the world is big and you never know what you will find.
Then he wanted to try the game. And then I saw that he was starting to get interested. 30 minutes later he was talking how awesome the game is.
The point is: In Minecraft you have freedom. You can do whatever you want and have fun.
