Look, to all that don't seem to understand, there is nothing, I repeat, NOTHING, that you can currently do to change the brightness at levels <6. I really do hope this changes for your sake, although I myself do like it quite a bit.
People are saying, "Harden the **** up," but I object to this feature not because it makes the game harder, but because it doesn't make any sense and is counter-intuitive and absurd. If I'm standing in a pit that I've mined out in the clear blue sunshine where I can see the sun, the sky shouldn't be as black as night. The feature creates situations that are just ridiculous.
So either Notch removes our ability to mine out material below level 30 so that we don't run the risk of running into a completely absurd situation of seeing the sun amidst a black sky (not possible), or he gets rid of this completely ridiculous feature.
I tested this out on my creative world, at 3 blocks above the void I could see a distance of 5 blocks, I went maybe 5 blocks up and had a pretty good view distance, so all I can say is MC edit the whole thing up 5-10 blocks and you should be fine.
Also the darkness does not spawn monsters, just lessens your FoV.
Brightness doesn't help, it's fog that kills it. The worst thing about this update, I totally agree. With full brightness, a fully lit mineshaft I made in level 6 looked somewhat like this. My view distance was about 10-12 blocks or so
Yeah i agree, i hate this new Altitude-Based-Lighting. Its ruined so many custom maps, and ruins deep undergound exploring. It really does need to be reversed. Half of the super hostile maps by vechs arnt even playable in several areas due to this fog.
Hellooo, it's unrealistic? If you light up a cave well, no matter how many miles deep down, you can see just like you can see on the surface. The only logical explanation would be some gases which are in those caves, that alters your view distance. However, not every cave has that AND not every gas causes your view distance to drop to 6 frigging blocks, so stop saying people to harden up. If it made sense, we would harden up.
Definitely needs tweaking. I love how people are saying "That will need to be modded out" as if they are certain the effect will remain exactly the same as it is now in the 'released' version of 1.8.
And to answer the question- Actually, Yes, the deeper you mine IRL the less light torches and other light sources give off, as a result of the extra dust in the air. It adds a nice atmosphere, but there are some rough edges on some corner cases (such as people having giant complexes near bedrock, like the OP)
@BC Programming: Well you're right but if you carve out huge places, like a tree farm or a slime farm, and have a few air ducts, I'm pretty sure that dust wouldn't be an issue to make you see no more than 5-6 blocks :/
this is what i posted on the getsatisfaction thread
Maybe it should be removed if there is no way monsters can get into your house or whatever. If it's all torched up and blocked other cave entrances. in this way the fog could go away when you're building stuff, but it can also have the spooky atmosphere when spelunking ^.^
