I searched the forums and yes, this has been asked before, yet I wasn't satisfied with the answers.
I've developed an aggressive mob trap, first as a prototype, a secondary prototype that worked decently well, and now a grand full scale version. At first, I started on the side of a hill...only one or two badmobs came by in a night. After moving to a sandy island for some reason (?) I had to go out and guide mobs to the trap...and now, completely enveloped by dark forests, a huge valley, lots of hills and grass and weeds, mobs still fail to spawn.
The only thing I get are stupid passive farm animals, which I thought were attracted to light and not the total darkness out here. Cows, sheep are useless, simply because they don't want to eat my brains....so in turn they dont even bother to walk over the trap.
My question is, HOW do I get aggressive mobs to spawn more often and come eat me?? Is total darkness and forests not enough?? Or is it simply random and out of our control.
And please, no stupid "idk y ne1 would ever want more mobs her der der dur dur dur"-shutup. Obviously I'm farming here idiot, apparently you can't handle the idea of harvesting mass quantities of gunpowder for PENNIES AN HOUR MWAHAHAHAHAHAAHH.
Stay near the dark. Remember that mobs will not spawn too close to you.
Mobs are not attracted to anything. Animals will spawn on grass near light, and Monsters spawn almost everywhere else. They won't actively seek out anything unless it's to kill you.
Passive mobs will spawn in grassy areas. Enemy mobs can spawn on any fully-opaque cube block with a light level of less than 7. They will not spawn if difficulty is set to 'Peaceful', and they never spawn on Glass, Ice, Stone Slabs, or other see-through or non-cube blocks.

I started with little to no knowledge of minecraft about four weeks ago. Read some tutorials, watched some youtube guides, and sifted through them and haphazardly made my own once I figured out "how" it was done. If I can do it, you can do it.

i belive that was what he said he was doing. maybe read the first post again?
Honestly, luring in mobs is extremely time consuming and only gets a few mobs a night. Hostile mobs won't spawn less then 24 blocks away from you so standing by your trap does not help. Like mentioned before, build a mob trap. You've probably seen on Youtube the mob traps that get you 7000 items per hour but start small like i did. This is one of the most easy mob traps to make in my eyes, test it out, watch the series. It gets me like 10 items per minute, 600 items per hour. Here

Besides finding a mob spawner, I know of no way to get mobs to spawn more often.

Or, you could attach a mob spawing box to it.
Thanks for the link, very interesting and answers my questions for the most part.
On that note, does the "zero chunk" exploit still work or was that fixed in an update???
